Opinion Will Brisbane’s win finally spell the end of the Academies?

And how do you think that’s going to go?

Speculative bid comes in early, who’s gonna trade with a team that a) might not have the draft capital and b) you can’t trade players for draft picks in the night.
No first round bid comes in, what happens then? Is the club duty bound to use their first round bid if they aren’t able to match any subsequent bids in the second round?

Some have suggested that the bids come in a week before. What happens if a club changes its mind because a player they thought would be off the table, is available on the night and you don’t want to bid?

I get the intent, but don’t see how this works effectively in practice. But then again I’m not in a recruitment team.

The bids just get done a week before the draft.

Then, if a club still hasn’t got what it needs, you have pick trading (including future picks) to get it.

There’s no reason at all to wait until draft day for the bids to happen.

Just interested to know out of Brisbane's premiership side yesterday. How many were Father/Sons and how many were academy picks?

Father/Sons:
W.Ashcroft pick #2
L.Ashcroft pick #5
Fletcher pick #12

Academy:
Gallop pick #42
Reville - Other
Marshall pick #25

Don't think academies is the issue if we are talking about the Lions.

Yep nailed it. The Father/Son rule shouldn’t help inter-state clubs any more or less than Victorian clubs in the long term.

There’s not really any evidence to suggest that academies are distorting the competitive balance of the AFL. Remember last weekend there was only one non-Victorian team in the prelims and they were an under-dog

There's plenty of inequities in this competition like I saw you post earlier.

You have teams where a large portion of their list are from interstate, whereas another team can draft almost exclusively from their home state and not have to compromise on talent.

Some teams travel five times a year, whereas other teams travel almost every second week, and if they want to get to a city a day earlier before the game, they need to factor those costs into the soft cap (the same soft cap the former team has as well).

Just a few (of many) examples of how the AFL is inherently an unequal completion.
should we push for a more equal competition or push for a more unequal one?

Do you think this man ran around on all fours in front of the Commissioners yesterday wagging his tail so that he’d have a HILARIOUS story to tell whenever the Saints B&F is.

Aww so triggered by the simple reality of paying a fair cost.

Can't prove the argument wrong so you whinge and bitch.

And that reality has triggered lions fans.

They got good players for cents on the dollar but do not even have the dignity to say "yeah we got lucky"
But no one complained when a few Victorian clubs took advantage of getting a bunch of gun F/S's into the team for cheap so its not worth complaining about apparently.

If you are an actual saints fan then you know our president went after all father sun and nga picks being cents on the dollar.

So which poster are you a Benny for champ?

Not triggered, your point was just dull.

Putting the academies aside, Father-Son is a disaster. In the past few years:

Levi Ashcroft
Pick 5
Brisbane paid: 40, 42, 43, 46

Jordan Croft
Pick 15
Dogs paid: 44, 46, 47

Will McCabe
Pick 19
Hawthorn paid: 42, 44

Will Ashcroft
Pick 2
Brisbane paid: 34, 35, 38, 40

Jaspa Fletcher
Pick 12
Brisbane paid: 42, 47, 49

Max Michalanney
Pick 17
Adelaide paid: 41, 54, 57

Sam Darcy
Pick 2
Dogs paid: 34, 42, 43, 44, 45

Nick Daicos
Pick 4
Collingwood paid: 38, 40, 42, 44

It’s completely absurd. Back in the early days you could get any F/S with a Round 3 pick. They changed it because it was unfair. Now, we are basically back to that.

Don’t know how they allow this continue and also have a “draft system”.

Compare those bids with what was actually paid. There is not a club on earth who would do those trades. So the system is clearly broken.

Way to ruin the key equalisation method.

Bassett has been proven correct time and time again.

Especially with how shocking the WA draft system is right now.

WAFL colts coaches are meant to work for free while the Allies and Vic Metro coaches all get salaries... Make it make sense
Unfortunately the once great powerhouse of the west is disintegrating whilst the boosting to northern states has really started to bear fruit. I am all for NSW and QLD gaining support, you have strength in those clubs and you’ve got market share.

The disparity needs to be shortened in WA, SA and Victoria. Shortened in that, as you say, the AFL mandates equilibrium through the youth programs through remuneration and resourcing. With the funds pumping into Tasmania it could be a long drought for the next Western premiership.

WAFC runs footy in WA (and owns the Eagles and Dockers).

The AFL has absolutely no power to impose operational directives on them.

When the initial system came in there was no live trading

Harris Andrew’s

So no actual argument.

Same old story.

I’ve not actually said anything to disagree with your pay more claim but you’re so busy shadow boxing its all gone wrong for you.

You can always count on the little guy.

I look forward to paying more from 2026. Great initiative from the AFL.

Why does QLD even have an academy?

They have more juniors playing footy than SA, WA and Geelong do.

The difference on Grand Final day was that the late picks draftees Geelong made fine AFL players cannot contend with early first round level talents that Brisbane had access for free.
