Opinion Will Brisbane’s win finally spell the end of the Academies?

Brisbane won the flag fair and square in 2025.

Go back to 1991-92, saints played in finals while Brisbane was almost broke and still played in the gold coast

St Kilda had a similar run of making top 4 five times and the top 8 another two times in eight years from 2004-2011, which is a similar record to Brisbane from 2019-2025. Brisbane have been able to convert that H&A success into two premierships.

Nobody is begrudging Brisbane from their deserved success. As has been stated widely, it’s so well deserved. They’re a terrifically run club.

The point is the role of the academy. If it was about growing the game, haven’t we accomplished that now?

There’s no other “equalized” competition in the world with a salary cap and draft that has this mechanism that allows some clubs to circumvent the draft.

Just interested to know out of Brisbane's premiership side yesterday. How many were Father/Sons and how many were academy picks?

Father/Sons:
W.Ashcroft pick #2
L.Ashcroft pick #5
Fletcher pick #12

Academy:
Gallop pick #42
Reville - Other
Marshall pick #25

Don't think academies is the issue if we are talking about the Lions.

There's plenty of inequities in this competition like I saw you post earlier.

You have teams where a large portion of their list are from interstate, whereas another team can draft almost exclusively from their home state and not have to compromise on talent.

Some teams travel five times a year, whereas other teams travel almost every second week, and if they want to get to a city a day earlier before the game, they need to factor those costs into the soft cap (the same soft cap the former team has as well).

Just a few (of many) examples of how the AFL is inherently an unequal completion.

With the assistance of academies and father sons. StKilda didn’t have that leg up.

I mean priority picks before the first round existed then, and St Kilda did benefit from that.

Every club had access to those picks? I’m not following the connection. If any club was terrible for two years, they got access to those picks.

What do other clubs need to do to get access to Annabel?

Like Cloke, there's serious danger Hawks will lose Cooper Hodge to Brisbane because of the stupid academy system. Qld academies must be taken over by the AFL. Far too much top talent to be hoarded by two teams.
See Nick Blakey to Sydney.

Our grand final side had academy picks that were picks 25, 42 and 61. They weren't the multiple first round academy picks that seems to be the narrative coming out of this.

Benefitting from father sons, absolutely, we've been very lucky in that regard. But I don't remember the same uproar when Collingwood won a flag off the back of Moore and Daicos x 2, as well as Quaynor from their NGA academy.

Annable I'll give you is a big leg up, especially since we've just gone back to back.

We should bid at pick 1 because he is clearly the best player in the draft. The top 5 crap is just people having a tantrum that he isnt in the open draft

He is 100% pick 1 if you look at it with common sense.
Yeah definitely bid on him and make sure he develops into a great player in the next two years. He will be back in Brisbane for our 4th premiership. 😂

I like the premise of this thread, that because one of the northern clubs won a flag the academies must be shut down.

It’s good stuff it truly is.

Don’t worry, I too fear that GCS finally made finals after 15 years. They’re getting too strong dammit.

Academies are an investment in the future of the competition.
Pay the fair cost for the nepo baby wank then champ.

Your club might win but hey at least no nepo baby picks for meme picks

Why do lions fans seem so offended at the reality they got gun players for **** all even while being good and hate that the system must change?

Have to trade a player or 2? Have to give up picks to get nepo baby players?

If it was a big vic club in the same place you would agree with us.

All Bassett wanted was for nepo baby clubs to pay a fair cost not meme picks for top talent.

He has not been proven wrong, and well the amount of whinging and bitching from lions fans on this site has been beyond pathetic.
Karma for raiding Longer from us… Your salty cries makes the grand final win even better. Enjoy failing for another decade 😂

The past 3 seasons making grand finals brisbane has received the following draft picks:

W ashcroft- pick 2
Levi ashcroft- pick 5
Annable - heavily linked top 5 this year

Meanwhile, essendon and saints have received the following ( courtesy of chat gpt)

St Kilda

  • 2023: Pick 18 — Darcy Wilson. saints.com.au
  • 2024: First pick Pick 8 — Tobie Travaglia (also Pick 10 Alix Tauru later, but first was 8). afl.com.au
  • 2025 (upcoming): First pick currently Pick 7 (indicative). afl.com.au
Essendon

  • 2023: Pick 10 — Nate Caddy. essendonfc.com.au
  • 2024: First pick Pick 13 — Isaac Kako (matched bid). essendonfc.com.au
  • 2025 (upcoming): First pick currently Pick 4 (indicative).

Talk about equity in action...

Not sure how anyone has a dislike of geelong for winning a flag in 22 and contending since with an entire team made up of rookies and late picks, yet overlook the massive handouts and concessions brisbane receives

Is will Ashcroft was properly paid for then there is no issue (aka no Levi no Annabel).

The cost for nepo babies has been too weak for too long.

You act as though we have these academy guns that won us a flag on Saturday, when you wouldn’t even want Bruce Reville on the Saints list!

Do you think this man ran around on all fours in front of the Commissioners yesterday wagging his tail so that he’d have a HILARIOUS story to tell whenever the Saints B&F is.

Ah yes remember when Hawthorn won three in a row and we rushed to change the rules? And when Richmond won three in four and we changed the rules again??

Just like when we had two non-Victorian premiers between 2007 and 2022, and we made all those changes to ensure the game was fair, like booking the MCG for the next 40 grand finals.

Now we have the shock of a Queensland team winning not one two on the trot. So let’s get rid of the one thing that grows the game, grows the fan base, grows the talent pool, and provides northern clubs access to scarce talent.

This grievance just reminds us that the game is still at the mercy of resentments of VFL fans who want to take the game 40 years. We could file this entire topic under the VIC BIAS thread.

The issue is that you get a player that the afl rates as pick 2 compo for free
The afl is cooked

The league is cooked
Every team should travel, not play 20 games at the g
And a player picked at 2 should be matched with a pick equivalent, not 3 picks in the 40s
