Personally i dont think so, and really i hope not.
For a veteran player to be brought back in and have virtually zero impact in the midfield, i would have preferred to see a newbie. Honestly as good as a servant he has been, its time to say goodbye.
You cant teach an old dog new tricks, and unfortunately there aint nothing new about Ben..
I couldnt believe what he dished up today, was expecting him to be more desperate at least, instead it was receive, look sideways, go backwards most of the time.

He may have done alot of in-and-under work I couldn't see from the stand, but everytime he did pop up it was paired with calamity. Loyal clubman who has my respect, but on today's performance (barring injuries) I'm not sure they will find 3 more games for him.

I hear what your saying, but is it in the best interests of the overall development of the team to play him when you know what your going to get?
Lets say for argument sake Smith was to play today, we would not expect to much, alot like Matthews, but it would benefit us much more in future.

But its imprtant to reward loyalty as it creates better team spirit. Mathews may not be in our best 22 anymore but i still believe Roos should give him those 3 games (maybe against the lesser teams) as Mathews has been a hard working player for over a decade and Roos helping him reach the 200 mark would be a reward for all that Mathews has done.

It might be a crass question considering the emotional value of reaching a milestone, but is there any tangible reward for reaching 200 games? 300 games earns you an AFL Life Membership - any pressies for 200?

Its a catch 22 atm, he might be our best player in the 2nds, but on the contrary ever thought how the other, particularly the younger players might perceive it.
Its a step backwards theres nothing to gain in playing him accept reaching a mile stone, there is no improvement in his game and really we should be blooding our kids when we have the chance.

I think there actually is a "200 Club". But no, not really. It's just the milestone that you have to be a good player* to get, without having to be particularly durable.

* Benny's proximity to the milestone brings this into question, I'll concede.

He had a shocker today. I was absolutely frustrated with him today. Everytime Benny got the ball, he would either:

a) Kick it backwards
b) Kick/pass to a player who's in more danger
c) Kick is straight to the opponent

Only once did I remember Benny did something good. :thumbsd:

I think you get life membership of your specific club.

Don't know about other clubs, but at the Swans they hand out life membership after 150 games. So not a consideration.

Pretty ordinary game to say the least this afternoon. Part of me thought it was a backwards step bringing him in, part of me wanted him to do OK because he probably does deserve to get to 200. But on this afternoon's evidence I hope that's the last we've seen of him.

Mathews wasnt as bad as others today and i dont think another 3 games are alot to ask for a player who has given so much to his club. Its important to reward loyalty and commitment and Mathews deserves to reach 200 games.

Don't know how you could say that. We had many, many ordinary players out there today, but Benny was downright dreadful!!!!

I agree Liz.

The emotional side of me wants to see him play well and get to 200 but another side said this decline is not sudden, his form has been patchy for a few seasons and for an experenced player he is mistake ridden. South Swans is going to eat me alive now.

I thought SS would be onto this quick smart! Where is he?

I don't have anything to say because I didn't watch them game (I hate working Sundays!) but...I would really like to see him get to 200. I think he will.

I agree.

He's still an excellent player defensively but when the ball was in his hands today he was slow to react and disposed poorly. Still not the worst in the side so lets get him to 200 at least.

I think that if Ben is selected three more times to get to 200 the decision will be based on emotion rather than who warrrants a place in the senior 22. His game was very poor yesterday and the worst part in my opinion was his decision making.

Kicked a great pass to my mate in the stands yesterday. So at least he's an entertainer. :D :thumbsu:

I have no problem with him getting 200. The issue is where do we sit if he gets 230+?

I just watched a replay and honestly the worst on ground was probably between he, Everitt, and Bird.

I thought Everitt was our worst by far.

I think Benny has been harshly judged over the years based on what supporters see him do when he has the ball. The fact is that he isn't in the side because of his disposal or ability to set up plays. He is a very defensive player who is a great tackler and wears his opponent like a glove. His best work often goes unnoticed and supporters only seem to remember his mistakes when in possession (I admit that this often happens more than is acceptable even for a tagger). This is the reason Roos persisted with him when our supporters wanted his head. He obviously needs to improve a lot on yesterdays performance but I think he still has what it takes at this level.

I totally agree, eskifan. Everitt was bloody awful. They both looked as rusty as a 180B. Everitt at least has his physical attributes to fall back on (ie he's 6'10'') so will probably keep his spot. Benny doesn't have that luxury. If he does make 200, it will only be through multiple injuries or charity. I dont see him keeping his spot next week, although its only the bombers so maybe.
