Part of the reason we are going so well this year is that Ben Matthews is NOT in the team. He maybe able to stop the odd mediocre oppostion forward but whenever he GETS the ball his decision making is appalling. I shudder whenever he gets the pill....... AND I still blame him for 2006 GF loss. Look at the replay when Chick grabbed the ball in the last quarter. Matthews didn't want it. He played 150 games more than he should have... AND he jinxed Plugger's comeback not giving over the number 4. Crouchy on the other hand deserves a spot if he ever gets back but very hard to see him pushing out Jack, Bird or Bevan. Fozzie might be lucky also although his ball use is exceptional.

Fair enough that he's no longer in our best 22 and he does have very poor decision making but I can't agree with your comment about him playing 150 games too many. Benny was never a flashy player but he has been a huge contributor to our success in the past 10 years. At one stage Benny was one of the only players in our team that knew how to lay a decent tackle. He has always been harshly judged because he's one of those players you don't really notice until he makes a mistake but when you're a Benny fan like I am and you watch him closely you really pick up on the things he added to the team. He was a very physical player that knew how wear his opponent down and make sure they never had more than a second to dispose of the ball. I have no doubt he has helped set a standard of professionalism around the club for the younger players to follow.

BTW - I thought it was great that Benny told plugger to get ____ed when he wanted the number 4 back:thumbsu:

Ben Matthews has never been a flashy player, but has epitomised the Bloods ethic. If anybody deserves to get the chance of 200 games, he is one

His 2000-2004 were sensational years in terms of what he did to the make-up and leadership of a team losing the likes of Lockett, Kelly, Dunkley, Schwass and Cresswell. He won't make 200 now, but he's still my hero and always will be.

Congrats on a great career Benny :thumbsu:

Here, Here, SS, unfortunately sentiment has now gone out of football. Benny Matthews is and has been a great servant of the club. I hope the cards fall his way and he can get to 200 games. He will always be one of (22) men that will go down in South Melbourne / Sydney Swans football club folklore as a premiership player and no-one can take that away from him!!! :D:thumbsu:

This takes me back to the 2005 Grand Final & Stephen Quartermain's quote just after the final siren, which encapulates the moment and still sends shivers down my spine when I watch the DVD;

"The longest premiership drought in football history is over ...
for the first time in 72 years, the Swans are Champions of the AFL."

But this is topped only off by Roosy's quote of;

" It's just an amazing day, an amazing feeling...but most/more importantly to the people who have waited 72 years to see South Melbourne/(slash) Sydney Swans win the premiership...
WELL HERE IT IS !!!

2008 - THE BLOODS STILL FLYING UNDER THE RADAR

Pay some respect mate,Benny has been one of the reasons we have been so good in the last few years.There are a lot of midfielders happy to see the back of him,his workrate and guts for the BLOODS has been as good as any Swan,he deserves to get 200 but i carn't see it happening.
And don't blame him for 06, blame some of the pathetic set shots at goal for losing.Start enjoying the new Bloods including the new McHack,who with a bit of luck might lead us into another GF.

Benny has been a fantastic servant of our mighty club, it's just unfortunate that his decision making and subsequently his disposal skills have fallen by the wayside in the past couple of years. He deserves his 200 like Kelly deserved a premiership medallion...but it just may not happen!

On 2006, we didn't lose the GF for any particular reason other than we were beaten by a better team on the day...shit happens, let's just win it this year!

Nope. If you notice, since he came back into the seniors, he has disappeared off the emergency lists. He is gone. (and this is no disrespect to what Mathews has given the club over the years, just time has passed him by).

Well I got that wrong. Back onto the emergency list!

Two hundred is just a number. I've been as critical as any about Ben's ability but it is indisputable that he has given everything he has for the Swans. Whils't it would be nice for him to get to 200, he is performing a much more important role this year - doing a fantastic job teaching the kids in the twos what the Blood's spirit is all about. It seems he has accepted that he is not inthe best 22 any more, but instead of sulking he has taken it on the chin and continued to work for the betterment of the club. If all our players had Benny's attitude, the Swans would be unbeatable. Maybe not a champion player, but a champion clubman. I for one will remember this contribution rather than the number of games he played.

Great post spot on:thumbsu:

Maybe time, younger ones, and newer gameplan, has passed him by?

But what a luxury to have that sort of experience & depth to fall back on, if required!

If he does play I'll be sure to watch him closely as it would appear that there is a genuine chance that it will his last game of AFL footy. :(

You never know though.... He may just put in a blinder and steal back a regular position.
