Hi folks, huge poll here. Who thinks round 1 will go ahead next week after recent cancellations of the Grand Prix and other sporting events? I don’t believe it will. Have at it

No it will not go ahead.

There’s no point in having a season played without fans in attendance. The AFL may as well cancel the whole thing.

Better off canning the first 5 weeks, go with a 17 game season, would require a reschedule but it could be done.

I think it goes ahead in Round 1 as planned, but with crowds locked out. There are so many other things to factor in though. God knows what they are going to do about public transport. More than half a million people in Melbourne use it 3-7 times a week, people are absolutely crammed in against each other like sardines. Much more at risk than going to a sporting event where unless you have a near capacity crowd, most people are generally able to keep a good distance.

We've not even come into flu season yet though, the main outbreaks have been in the Northen Hemipshere where it is currently winter. Expected to peak here around June-July, locking out the first couple of rounds might do much and cancelling the season or pushing it back 3 months doesn't sound like much of an option at this point.

Cancelling the Grand Prix made sense - big international event with fans and competitors coming from all over the world. NBA has experienced multiple players contract the disease, and it is highly prevalent in countries like Italy and Spain who have also suspended their sporting leagues. We've not experienced any of that here yet but it can all change pretty quickly.

You could keep many of the rounds as is. It’s just the rounds that involve the 2nd meeting needing to be rescheduled.
Than again who gets the extra home games and who doesn’t? I know we would be one that doesn’t and the derbies could be considered neutral.

Anyway with cancellations it creates a bit of a mess.
I also think it gets played without a crowd. If I can go to work than so can they.
Restriction are important but you don’t have to overdo it.

No, and the season will eventually be cancelled as well.

The AFL will delay the inevitable by giving people hope that everything will start as normal at the end of April, until they realise this is a losing battle and abandon the season.

I reckon it will go ahead but with no crowds and with chartered (and disinfected) planes for the teams to travel in.

The TV $$$ is too big to completely rule out the season. No point wiping out Rd 1 when all the predictions are for Australia to feel the brunt of it in July/August.

Grand Prix had people travelling in from all over the world and then heading back to various places in the world having sat in a huge crowd. Completely the right call - just a few days too late.

Kinda disagree here - there's other highly successful industries that rely primarily on online streams (mainly in the eSports field). Obviously it's going to be a massive downgrade in revenue and overall appeal if there's no fans present, but I wouldn't say it's entirely pointless going ahead with the season

If round 1 is postponed or cancelled, it's understood clubs will be organising scratch matches with one another.
