With such young stars such as Martin, Cotichin, Lids, Foley ... the votes will be spilt so will we ever win one in teh future with such talent coming through?

P.s any one notice when hodge was being interviewed dustin getting his back rubbed for teh whole interview :P

Our last winner was 40 years ago and whilst for 30 of those years we have been ordinary for the most part we have had players that have played well enough to have deserved it. I noticed tonight that in some games we won we still didn't get 3 votes how often do we get votes in close games that we lose. It has gotten even worse once that sour vindictive old fart that we fired as a coach became the head honcho of the umpires.

In short no can't see it happening.

I thought it was promising. Cotch came 18th and every player above him was at least 2 years older (ok Selwood was 23 months older).

Best under 23 players:

Cotchin - 15
Fyfe - 13
Martin - 12
Gibbs - 12
Shuey - 12
Rockliff - 9
Robinson - 9
The rest

A 21 year old and a 20 year old polling 15 and 12 votes despite only winning 8 games for the year. Good chance one of those two will win one in the coming years.

Jack got 2 votes in round 1.
Only 1 vote (to Grigg) in the draw vs St K.
Cotchin got one in the Hawthorn *******ing.
Lids got one in the Pies smashing.
Foley got 1 vote in the Port loss.
Dusty got a vote in the Sydney loss.
Newman got a vote vs GC.
Cotch got 2 in the Geelong hiding.
Dusty got 2 and Nahas got 1 in the North loss.

Sylvia getting (a deserved) 3 vs us and Van Berlo getting 3 were the only 2 wins that we missed the 3 in. Apart from Lids in round 2 we weren't that stiff. They make mistakes each week but we weren't that hard done by. Stop ya whinging.

Sorry.

The Brownlow is by far the best sporting award in the world. Better?

I did. Was Newy doing it too. I think he has a serious man crush on Dusty. couldn't keep his hands off of him. On another note, Cotch's missus is pretty fine :thumbsu:

No idea how he didn't get 3 votes vs Saints. Didn't he win the BOG medal for it?

The umps got it right. Deledio was quite good, but a lot of the credit he got was because he played on Goddard and kept him quiet. It became apparent after 4 or 5 weeks of the season that Goddard was in shocking form, and everyone was keeping him quiet.

for sure, imagine if we won another 5 games for the year. there would of been a huge chance for cotch. next year he will be closer, finish top 5. then it wouldnt be to far away from there

Interesting to note that Jack who was equal 2nd for Coleman polled 2 votes (with Cloke 13 votes and Buddy 20 votes). I'm sure we won't hear anything from Jack or the RFC about it. But a significant difference. Barry Hall didn't appear to get any and S. Milne got 5. Votes. Just mentioning them because they were next in line for the Coleman.

If we start winning games and getting into finals (I know, I know) it would be in the AFL's interest to increase the exposure of Richmond and it's players, so they might nudge the umps to look at our players more favorably.

Jack regularly talks back to the umpires, complaining about decisions he doesn't get. Rightly or wrongly, that's not going to inspire votes.

Like everyone else, umpires go into matches with some people in mind. Swan missed out last year because he wasn't really on their radar. This year, knowing they'd missed him, they took particular note of anything he did.

We start winning, Cotch/Dusty get everyone talking, they'll get a lot more votes, even if they dn't play any better.

BTW. I also think this goes for umpires decisions... Player get the rub of the green because umpires go in thinking particular players are fair/thugs/unco and the close calls get adjusted accordingly. For example, if they start to think Cotch is a star, they'll notice if he gets held at a stoppage a lot more, and if Jack shut up, he'd probably get more frees.

Dane Swan won with the most votes ever and he had Pendlebury, Thomas, Cloke, etc to contend with for votes.

Ablett won a Brownlow convincingly and almost won another when he missed half the season, whilst he was playing with one of the greatest lists assembled.

If a player like Cotchin has a great season (which I think he will) and deserves to win, he will.
