Some American commentators incl Pam Shriver and NY Times saying tennis should consider luck loser and Fritz be able to play in semi. What a completely idiotic idea. Fritz to his credit quickly poured cold water over it. Sore loser Yanks

I think the idea of the "lucky loser" is fine but if youre doing it it has to be declared before the tournament starts. You cant just introduce it now, thats absurd (some reporters are saying due to the "unique" nature of Wimbledon this year they could, absolute idiocy).

For clarity i dont think its a good idea, as some have raised imagine the Tournament winner being a guy who already lost earlier, imagine said loser coming back and winning a first set walkover cause of an injury, should the lucky loser be allowed to roll about one set down and pick up?
Disappointing that Rafa had to forfeit and won't be able to play in the semi, I was looking forward to watching that match, it would have been a cracker.

I wish Rafa had lost that quarter final now so Fritz could have played in the semi instead.

Lucky for Kyrgios going straight through to the final but it would be a bit of a hollow feeling making the final by default.
I dont think its hollow, he had to win 5 matches to get here anyway. No more hollow than watching a seed quit on your half half of the draw and your run getting easier.

He'll be nervous!

Yep. This is his chance to go from circus clown (in the eyes of some) to legend. And shut a heap of people up in the process.

I also think it would be good for the sport if Kyrgios won.

Would make a mockery out of the game if a lucky loser was allowed to play in a quarter final, semifinal, etc. of a GS or major tournament. Shriver feels for Taylor Fritz, he had his chance against an injured player and lost. The person who she should feel sorry for is Nadal, not Fritz.

Really happy for Nick.

Has copped a pasting from confused journos all tournament and he just keeps rising up and winning.

Would have loved to see the match tonight, but he now has a couple more days to recover and will be fresh to take on Novak.

Massive opportunity.

If you can’t beat an injured player like Rafa clearly was you definitely do not deserve another chance.
It’s not a participation or loser’s trophy. It’s hugely unfair on Kyrgios if Frtiz gets a chance then wins.

Hilarious seeing the uproar for the withdrawal. Anyone else and it wouldn’t have been an issue. I don’t see how it’s any different to Nadal lining up for the first serve and then forfeiting the match when he finds he can’t handle the pain. It’s just saving everyone time by pulling out now

I'm not going to turn a blind eye to the massive negative side of Nick.
But
I find his tennis riveting.
I do love watching him play.
I don't tune in for the side show.
His tennis is entertainment enough.
I want him to beat Novax fair and square. No stupid stuff.
Beat him purely on ability.

Cheeky Joker hammy in his semi final win celebration? A double walkover to win a GS would be hilarious just for the media melts
It would also be the most Kyrgios thing ever.

Lose like 20k of your prizemoney in fines, win in a double walkover, win a Slam with no ranking points attached.

King shit.

That sucks for Rafa was looking forward to the match get well soon.

Alright Nick let's do this you can become a legend over night

Winning a grand slam due to luck doesn't make him a legend (especially when he's a flog of questionable character).

Well he hasn't won yet. So if he beats Djoker/Norrie it's luck?

Lol, nice logic 👍

This happens quite often. Players retiring hurt or unable to play. Kyrgios just kept fit and beating the players he had to.

Be nice if people hark back to how much of a flog Federer was before he’s the nice boy he is now. Selective memories.

I find these two articles fascinating from a sociological POV - the first is from an upper-class English journalist and the second from an Aussie (open in private view)

The Brit's article is a sneering take-down of Kyrgios and his behaviour and the humiliation the poor Royals may have to suffer in chatting to such a brat. What's interesting is his criticism of Nick's last post-match interview - most Australians felt he had redeemed himself somewhat in his openness and authenticity. The last questions about the dress-code was universally derided as British up-lippery, yet Oliver Brown cites it as a reasonable questions and attacks Nick's deference.

The Aussie's article is much more pragmatic - a hero to few even in our country but I think a begrudging respect is growing inwardly, Aussies are absolute suckers for authenticity whereas genuity is not a hallmark British characteristic in the slightest (i.e. the manner in which you speak to Royals must be light and heavily depersonalised).

I was on the fence but now I really want Kyrgios to serve it to those absolute British toffs. I don't care if half our grandparents are from the Motherland the place is a toxic wasteland of class privilege that belongs in a Shakespearean play.
