Ok, so I am a sucker and bought a window 8 laptop yesterday.

I feel like throwing it at the wall.

Anyone here find this to be the worst operating system ever?

The apps, they say I can't use them because i'm not connected to the internet, hello, yes I am! What am I doing wrong?

Other than that, operating everything else is just shit.

Start saving for a mac now.

I'll be surprised to see if anyone here defends this crap.

Bought a ThinkPad e330 few months ago, came with Win 8 as well. First thing i did was created an image of the system and saved it to an external HDD, then proceeded to spend considerable time trying to get into the boot menu so I could boot from a bootable USB (as it turned out it's not as simple as pressing a function key). Found out you need to go through 'Settings'>'General' in Win 8 to be able to restart the system with advanced options (e.g. accessing the BIOS) and not only that you also need to turn off Secure boot (within the BIOS) to allow non-MS Operating Systems to be installed.

So eventually I installed Linux Mint.:)

Tried it for awhile on a new laptop, if it's got a touchscreen I'd say it would work well, seems to be what it's designed for. Though it still feels like two frontends squished in side by side rather than a true mix and I wont be surprised if it's superseded pretty quick.

Still the more I used it the quicker I got (was coming straight from XP), it runs quick enough and I didn't hate it after a month or two........ Then I dropped my laptop and bought one with windows 7.

It's a pain in the arse for PC users, especially those with large screens. A major miscalculation by Microsoft which has actually managed to slow the sale of new PCs.

Meh, nothing wrong with Windows 8 once you get the start button back. Don't know about these apps you're talking about, but everything works great here.

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel now. The apps will work with other connections like wifi etc but I'm using a 3G USB connection for the next month so once I get wifi it should be all good all though I can see I would very rarely use them at all

I spoke to a client that is using Windows 8.1 and he said that the changes MS made were considerably more user friendly.
From what I heard it will be included as a normal windows update.
I hope they have fixed up the Metro customisation as it's appalling at the moment.

Going on what I've read, the update won't save this turkey in the eyes of PC users.

They really need two OS's - one for PCs, another for handhelds/touchscreens.

Concede the error of your ways, MS, and bring on Windows 9.

Haven't used it yet. Probably won't bother for some time.

is the entire OS touch screen? if so, still haven't got my head around how it works on a PC. Obviously you can't upgrade from your current OS then, would need to buy new hardware?

You can use a mouse and keyboard too!

that makes a lot more sense. obviously all the adverts you see are really geared towards the touch screen on tablets. it did get me thinking. to be honest i dropped right off MS about 18 months ago and have gone completely linux. so much happier.

The whole "Metro" system is designed around touchscreen systems, however something like Stardock's Start8 and hopefully the upcoming Windows 8.1 turn it back into the more traditional style of Windows. Touchscreen systems are the future so I understand why they are pushing it, but there are ways around it and there's no real reason for holding off upgrading.

So what are everyone's early thoughts on 8.1? I like that there's a facebook app (even though it needs a little work) and the start screen is more customisable. Might see me spending 15% of the time in the metro screen instead of the 5% I did for Windows 8.

While I'm still on the windows 8 laptop, I can assure you i will never buy a windows computer again.

Need to get something for my uncle. The upcoming Dell Venue 11 Pro (Win 8.1) looks bloody good, but first going to check out the Asus T100 ($588 at Officeworks):

Installed it ages ago for a couple days, reverted back to W7 and never looking back.. or forward. w/e. Horrible system

Missus just bought one. Never been so frustrated at an OS in my life. Biggest piece of shit Microsoft have ever released. Windows 7 for now until they iron it out considerably.

8.1 is a welcome addition to 8.0. Once you've spent some time configuring things, Windows is fine. Metro apps suck but you don't have to use them.

Windows 8 is not another Vista. But if you're on 7, stay there for now.
