I blame the junior coaches/parents for not equipping the players with the focussed skill set required to be elite ball users at a preschool age. I blame the recruiters for picking players who arent elite ball users and ball getters. And I blame the coaches who can't set a gameplan around the skillset of the squad.

lol carn. Imagine playing a particular game plan because the team is poor by foot, it plays with the players heads. Makes them more indecisive and puts further pressure on them. It's been mentioned before but the 2014 game plan we took the game on etc, the players were allowed to so they did and it worked. None of this bullshit where Ken humiliates Wingard for his poor kicking against Geelong, probably did the same thing to Dixon after the EF and that's why he is mentally shot this year. Ken and the coaches are crippling our side. We've got two clear players that have a license and that's Gray and Westhoff, the rest of the squad seem's to be forced to playing this defensive mindset shit, until we're down 30-40 points at halftime and Ken tells them to play exciting footy.

Wingard has 100% been crippled by Ken and the coaching staff.

Hawthorn won 3 flags off of their gameplan catering towards their superior kicking

Western Bulldogs won a flag off of having a gameplan around being a hard in and under extreme effort pressure team with meh skills

Richmond won a flag off the back having a gameplan that caters towards smalls. Being a manic side with hardnosed pressure smalls. Theyre like the lowest rated kicking team but it works because they back themselves in to win every contest if the ball hits the deck from a chaos kick or knock forward.

I'm so ****ing sick of this defence first bullshit. Let players play their most natural game using their strengths. There is so much material about overcompensating for weaknesses by disproportionately focusing on improving them rather than focusing on what you're good at - being detrimental to your performance. It is much harder to improve weaknesses than it is to hone your natural talents. It's simple. Get your defensive side to a reasonable standard. Hell, many elite attacking players have garbage defensive games and you don't see elite coaches crying foul about it. Just focus on doing what you're good at and try to get the rest to an average standard. Play elite attacking players as elite attacking players ffs. Our coaches need to **** off.

I haven't heard a Wingard interview for a while. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed by how well he speaks these days.

Can't wait for him to get back in form.

I suspect that when the NBA Finals are over sometime next week, you watch his form line jump.

He's obviously put on weight eating Buffalo wings while binge watching the playoffs.

They playoffs were over the moment the refs decided to screw over Houston

Has Chad peaked at 22 years of age with his 2nd AA season in 2015? His last 2.5 seasons say that's the case so far.

Trying to think who else that might have happened to. Wangers got his 3rd AA when he was 22 in 1995 and then his next one 6 years later but I dont think anyone could say Wangers struggled in those 6 seasons when he was injury free. Wangers did miss about 25 games with injuries at Port between 1997 and 2000, especially 2000 where he only played about 10 games.

I dont know if Chad has carred a lot of injuries post 2015 into games. He did struggle in 2016 after he got concussed in one game and finished missing 2 or 3 games with an injury at the end of the season. He has played 18 off 22 games in 2016, 19 of 23 in 2017 and 9 of 10 in 2014.

He didn't really struggle in 2016 and 2017. Not AA level but he was still pretty good. Last year's games against Brisbane at the GABBA and North at Adelaide Oval spring to mind immediately and there were others. This is the first year he's really struggled.

Interesting both Kornes and Tredrea have penned articles on that fact he is wasting his talent in the last 6 weeks.

Suspect the Club is using media proxies to spur him into lifting his professionalism to become the A grader he should always be.

Probably a topic for another thread but I reckon the Tredrea article would apply to the majority of our list and every other club's list. There seems to be a real 'do the minimum' culture in AFL circles, aided and abetted by the AFLPA's ridiculous demands and anal sports science dudes that don't want players doing much lest they get injured. I suspect diet, alcohol consumption, etc, are also not particularly strong areas, particularly in the off season.

Chad always has spoken well. I remember hearing an interview with him when we first drafted him. I think he had been captain of his team and spoke about mentoring players and also about his parents fostering children and the part he played in helping them and how important family was to him. Despite any perception of his attitude on field he has always sounded like a pretty mature and grounded young man.

"We're not the most elite kicking side, but we've got to rely on our defensive pressure and the effort to try to get the ball to ground if it's not in our advantage,"

This mentality right here is our problem
All the natural ability of footballers getting sucked out of their souls. Port zombies. Wont use robots as you need to hit targets

I love Chad but Treaders article was so spot on. Talent will only get you so far in life.
Chad's body shape is not what a professional athlete getting paid $500k per year should look like.
He needs to spend more time on the track - in the gym and get his mind set focused on enjoying the sport.
PS It would be great if Port gave Treaders a role down at the club as a motivator/mentor/strategist - he knows what he is talking about.

Hartlett didn't play at 100% because he didn't trust his body... are we seeing the same now with wingard?

+ this negative game plan doesn't help.

Love ya Winnie Hoping ya get back to ya best sooner then later

Lol Ken in radio.

"It's not about taking marks or kicking goals for Chad at the moment. It's about competing."

What even. Not about kicking goals and taking marks? **** off Ken. Chad lives to kick goals and take marks.

Kens right.
If Chad gets his competitive edge back then the goals/marks will take care of themselves.
Chads at his best when his manic in his attack at the ball.

Disagree on the method to get his edge back. I think he just needs to play football. Focusing on competing is negative loser talk. Chad doesn't compete. He breaks games open - it would damn well help to reinforce that in him sometimes. Particularly when confidence is low.

Perhaps, Ken is simply avoiding throwing Chad under the bus. Defending our own from those outside, keeping criticism within.

2 dumb kicks against WCE in the final in the last 2 minutes. The jumping into Clurey for a mark in front of the Hawks goal square with 4 minutes to go which caused Clurey to spill the ball and fall into Roughie and give away the free which resulted in the last goal of the game. He is quickly racking up dumb costly decisions.

Agreed, he HAS to be better than that, but as I alluded to in another thread Chad ( to me ) is one of the more obvious to have had the `flair ' coached out of them, and I believe it may unfortunately only be a matter of time before the current coaching regime costs the club key players.

Wonder if it's been considered that it may just be better to keep him away from defence full stop? Not only can he be a liability but he could be played in a position where we can slingshot the ball when most of our team are in the back lines. There have been games where we have had to put up with multiple inside fifties against us in a row, simply because there is no-one to pass to when the ball is collected in defence.
But our other players would still have to back him up. One of the biggest problems we have is that we get a ball to a player in space but there is nowhere for him to go or player to pass to when that space is shut down.

He was talking about Charlie, not Chad.

You sure? Clearly heard him say Chad, and the radio even had a preamble about Chad in the lead up to the soundbyte. Not that it matters, should apply to either player.

The talk was about both players but Ken was referring to Charlie then - saying they want him to mark and kick goals but it's not the only thing, they are first and foremost looking for him to compete and bring the ball to ground.

Ken actually said re: Wingard that he's in a bad spot of form but they've turned the heat up on him a little and are backing him to turn it around.

I understand where the idiot there got wrong, but I liked the idea that players who got a golden pass this week are all wearing Magpies beanies... :p

I agree completely. Different players need to be inspired to perform in different ways. With Chad, if I was his coach, I'd get in his ear before the game and say:

"Chad, there are 40k people here to be entertained by you. They're here to see you. Put on a show. Go out and entertain them. Regardless of what happens, let every spectator walk away at the end of the game saying, "Chad Wingard is a freak!". You're a special talent, Chad. Just entertain them."
