The strong NSW presence in the Australian lineup has now become even stronger with the selection of opener Corey Richards as a late replacement for the World Cup.
Richards's form so far at ING Cup level this season has been unspectacular, but following the tragic injury of Matthew Hayden from burns caused by the volcanic eruption in Pretoria this morning and his Test partner Justin Langer's untimely contraction of typhoid, Richards has become a shock inclusion into an Australian side chock-full of confidence after their easy win in the one-day series in Australia last month.
Conditions will be tougher for the Australians in the World Cup following the ICC's decision to authorise a 4th stump to be placed on each wicket when the Australians are batting. However, Australian captain Ricky Ponting is reported to be unconcerned. Looking resplendant in his brand new baggy green cap, Ponting expressed greater concern about the Wanderers Stadium pitch following ground curator Joanne Asburg's admission that she absent-mindedly left some unexploded dynamite sticks in the wicket square while preparing a pitch for a recent Currie Cup match.
