This was a bit stiff to not make the cut

I'd be extraordinarily offended by that, if I was Morton, firstly he gave a shove, then the big "brave" dunce that came to hammer him, got into him , as he was looking at the play he took off realising how it might have looked, but he was actually running because the play had come back toward them.
The big bloke I'd say his bravery could be questioned for being a bully, bit like Mumford always mangling little blokes.

I think lots of people who follow Aussie rules , in fact most people, who follow Aussie rules, have no idea what so ever about how hard it is to just get to play senior AFL/VFL football, even the reserves is an achievement, so threads like this are actually a damned insult to every player mentioned, and, I guess I can't begrudge a bit of fun but there is some garbage put out there?

Meh, sort of not really. In fact maybe the opposite.

Some of the most talented players never make it, either through a lack of identification or a lack of effort on their own behalf. Plenty of things can stand in the way of getting on a list or getting a game. It's all bullshit. I know a Collingwood rookie who was delisted because he left the club mid-season to help out his sick mum; I heard of a Saints listed player who was an emergency – player was out sick last minute, came down to a choice of who'd be the better in the wet, as said player was 6'4 or so he didn't get the nod and thus never ended up playing. Then there's the story of the kid who didn't want to give up normal teenage stuff, the Aboriginal guys not deemed 'mature' enough or something or a 'risk.'

A lot of guys come out of nowhere at 17-18 and do just enough to get picked up. Play in a good colts side, are a certain type of player just one club needs to stock up on...

For as many unlikely players who get a game, there is the hardworker who gets the reward. For every kid who could have had it but didn't want it, there's the one who does everything right but never cracks that senior game.

Go away.

That larkey kid who plays for north. Probably the worst player I've seen get a game in 10 years.

Was 4th in VFL goal kicking when he got that game.

Probably would of played 22 at the Dogs.

I'm pretty sure everyone knows he was getting back into the play. It still looks ****ing hilarious regardless.

Cale Morton was a great talent.
Not the worst footballer
A wasted talent.
Showed some great form in the WAFL and VFL.
Just let that AFL dream slip.
Application and mental toughness robbed this young athlete.
However. That confrontation with Lade is one hilarious piece to his highlight reel.

Of the 700, 800 players on an AFL list, do you think they all got there because they're indeed the best 800 players in Australia? Did they all get there through superior skill and supreme intent?

There is a wide mix of people on AFL lists. There are guys who were always destined to play AFL – who dominated junior games and were told to sit out for an entire halves for other kids to have a kick. Some of these kids become greats, some barely play for five years. Some people get on lists through sheer luck – played a belter in one game of juniors, recruiters were there, they then got into a good TAC Cup side, etc. etc. Others had a similar story with nepotism: favour played for a WAFL side, they slot into the best colts team's backline, they barely concede a goal, they go high in the draft (they subsequently become so bad they basically don't want to continue an AFL football career).

That bloke was trying to say to get onto a list is some awesome achievement or some true indicator of you being a great player and deserving the chance. I don't think so. It is a cool thing to achieve but not all of them 'deserve' their spot. A lot of drafting comes down to 50/50 decisions, or 25-25-25-25 decisions in one night.

I'm not taking anything away from anyone on a list. Some players were bog average as teenagers but did the right things at the right time, got picked up, and became really good footballers and All Australians. Good on them.

I'm just saying, just because you were on an AFL list and some kid playing in the country never got close, that doesn't necessarily mean that kid on the list is a better player. Have you been to the country and seen some of the talent, especially in remote areas? You get me?

Lol what a response. Perhaps they aren't the best 800 odd. That wasn't really the point of the poster you quoted. Regardless of whether it is supreme talent or hard work the chances of a kid at Auskick at the age of 6 getting on list 12 years later is extremely remote.

Whether the top 800 players in the land are in the AFL is really beside the point.

He said most people have no idea the effort it takes to get to an AFL list.

Most people probably know a couple of people who were drafted and have a general idea on what other sports they played, how hard they trained, how much they drank, how dedicated they were.

It's just not true. Lots of people don't have to put in insane effort to get there. He was implying it was some year long journey of beach runs on Christmas day. It ain't. Lots of people just do well or only try hard when they realise a club may indeed pick them up.

Like the notion being on an AFL list is the final reward for years of hard work, and that's all it is, is kinda bullshit.

Obviously Morton didn't work out too well, but I can see why clubs were super keen on him. Looked a hell of a prospect as a junior - even though he was predominantly outside of the contest, he was tall, fast and possessed beaut of a kick.
