1990 #1 Steven Hooper (Geelong) - should be retiring from Geelong now aged in low 30s after successful career but never made an impact.

Hooper was a great pick that year. Which of the other top-30 selections from that year would you have prefered?

Stephen Hooper
James Cook
David Donato
Jason McCartney
Stewart Devlin
Allen Jakovich
Damian Hampson
Paul Gow
Matt Clape
David Ogg
Danny Sexton
Shane Porter
Todd Ridley
Andrew Hamer
Andrew Harrison
Todd Menegola
Brendan Hehir
Dan Miller
Gary Merritt
Robert West
Richard Ambrose
Paul Sharkey
Ben Thomas
John Fidge
Peter Worsfold
Dale Hall
Brad Davis
Chris Smith
Byron Donnellan
Mathew Young

I wouldnt say he did nothing..... I remember him kicking a ball out from Fullback in a certain Grand Final straight to Peter Sumich who touched it onto Tony Evans who kicked it back over O'Reilly's head to bury Geelong. For that I will always remember him :D

While I could be wrong, I'm pretty certain Hooper never played in a grand final side.

Banik was bad, but you are forgetting one Richard Lounder, who the Tigers picked up in 1989.

Yeah he was bad, but again he was a good pick. Look at the options ...

Richard Lounder
Chris McDermott (Brisbane)
Graham Wright
Andrew Brockhurst
Michael Quirk
Andrew Rogers
Darren Davies
Darren Jones
Michael Murphy
Michael Parsons
Tim McNeill
Grant Williams
Peter Bubner
Wayne Peters
Andrew Jarman (Brisbane)
Chris Grumley
Chris Waterson
Patrick Browne
Jamie Cox
Stuart Wigney
Shane Korth
Scott Christie
Scott Salisbury
Mark Ducker
Damien Tresize
Stephen Oliver
Brendon Gale

Now bearing in mind McDermott and Jarman were NO CHANCE of leaving SA, certainly to go to a struggling club ... Lounder looks a good pick. The only good players on that list (who were available) were Graham Wright and Brendon Gale and Richmond got one of them. Richmond drafted WELL that year.

Lounder was an alcoholic which nobody knew about. I have heard KB talk about him, and in his first few games and at training they couldn't believe how good he was. He was quick for his size, a great kick, great mark, didn't fumble and hardly ever went to ground.

However the demon drink was his way to escape the pressure which he couldn't handle at all.

Banik had heaps of talent, but got a severe dose of Glandular Fever which really knocked him around physically and mentally. Alan Jeans said to a guy I worked for that he started to hear footsteps on his return and basically never got his confidence back.

That said both DUDS..

Try this one on for recent flops;

Kayne Pettifer ahead of Shaun Burgoyne
Aaron Fiora ahead of Matthew Pavlich

Hey Dudd, Hoooper was long off the scene prior to '94.

He came back to East Perth, but I don't even think he was fit enough to even resume with them.

Get your facts right before you pontificate.

along with arnol was caydn beetham... he told bevo to get stuffed as he'd be long gone in the draft before st kilda got their pick at 8 i think, shows how much he knew...

also wasn't their some guy with a helmut called hutton who failed to live up to much of anything? also went high in the draft.

Surely Frost, I think Michael?, would be the worst for St. Kilda. Stan Alves had control of the drafting at the time, took him with our first pick and chose him on the basis that he destroyed us in a previous game. Turned out to be his only good game.

Yeah, what's sadder is that John Bevo wanted to recruit a young Fraser Gehrig but was over-ruled by Stan the man.

ANTHONY BANIK AT NUMBER ONE IN THE 80'S FOR RICHMOND TOPS THE LOT

How many number one picks have failed as badly as this guy??

NOOOOOOO WAYYYYYYYY!!

Wasn't Richard Flounder a No. 1 pick?

If not i retract.

What happened to Banik, I was/am the same age as him, and he startd off ok.. what happened?

can anyone shed insightfull knowledge here?

EDIT: Apologies.. usually I read an entire thread before posting.. On this occasion I jumped the gun, and having now read the entire thread, I remember Banik's Glandular fever...

But.. has any other player had his carrer 'ended' by glandular fever?

Alex McDonald for Hawthorn - his two brothers ended up having longer careers.

Banik wasn't mentally prepared to be number one.
Since the draft camps began the order sorts its self amongst the draftees and whoever goes number has the respect of his peers from the word go.
Banik never had that peer group respect and contented him self down Gippsland way after his sickness his brother once told me.

I cant beleive none mentioned

Collingwood

pick 7 - Danny Roach

Carlton

pick 6 - Vance
pick 7 - Massie
pick 4 - Livingston

Didn't play a senior game, spent the first 1/2 of the year playing at West Brisbane. Upon being dragged before 1/2 time, stormed off into the change rooms, stole $200 and returned to Perth.
hilarious, we have a winner. worst draft pick in history. angwin is second.

worth the 7 pick. he plays seniors every week. it just didnt work out at carlton because his dad wasnt happy with the club his son was at and decided to leave. would have been a good player for us, but he is definitely nowhere near the worst draft pick ever

I'll pay Vance, but Massie plays for Adelaide every week, and Livingston is a 21yo who is still a senior listed player. Granted he hasn't made much of a mark as yet, but I wouldn't totally write him off while he still has the opportunity to improve. If he's delisted at season's end, then you'll have a decent argument.

Eh? Massie's dad is a Swedish doctor or lawyer that Kris has never met.

The Doggies wasted (I think) pick 9 on Alan Jackovich in the '95 draft. Had chronic injury problems, and stayed a very short time.
