Picking up from the thread about the gaps in our list closing, I thought this would be a reasonable way to judge the state of our current list. It was said to be St Kilda's strength last year, having an even list with few poor players. It was also a big improvement in their fringe players (15 - 25th) from 2008 which stepped up: Jones, McQualter, Clarke, Armitage, Eddy, and a few others.

Not including rookies:

Anthony Corrie
Leigh Brown
Ryan Cook
Luke Rounds/Jarrad Blight
Josh Thomas/Ben Sinclair

Considering Thomas and Sinclair are fresh off the boat and haven't even had a chance to prove themselves, and in a lot of ways the same can be said of Rounds and Blight because of age, this isn't a horrible bottom 5. Corrie won't get another go, and Brown has been serviceable at worst, and actually very handy in a number of games last year.

Cook has potential and could turn into a tagging option if he continues to progress as he has been.

Thoughts?

There might have been a big improvement in their fringe players, but they still had a bunch of fringe players. St.Kilda are actually one of the last teams I would have though of as even. They have a ton of A-graders, and then a fair bit of filler.

Bulldogs or Adelaide would be a better example of a team with good depth 1 through 22, and I think we're in a similar boat.

Toovey
Cook
Johnson
Reid
O'Bree

I've only isted Senior players/players that sometimes get a senior game though.

Fair enough, but you have O'Bree and Johnson behind Leigh Brown?

I agree with most of those, Mine are:

Toovey
L Brown
Barham
Macaffer
Wellingham

I think you are a bit harsh on Reid - Yes his AFL games where not great but I think he started to come on late last year

For mine, Toovey is comfortably in our best 22 - he was a critical part of our successful run last year.

I think Dave's list must be only counting regular starters and semi-regular senior players which wasn't really the intent of the threat, but oh well. Cook should be on that list.

Yep it's on Players who are in the 22 or on the Edge

I actually think we have moved on all of our "dead wood"
Just for the record Leigh Brown is going nowhere. As much as we bag LB he gives us height, bullish "weight throwing" and depth in the backline. I would love to see Ben Reid take his place but i just cant see that happening. I think MM has confidence in LB to pick him before Reid week in week out.

Saying that, id love for Reid and Nathan Brown to play in the same backline week in/out! Prolly wont happen next year though barring injuries.

I think the problem with our bottom 5 is there disposal (jaxson barham) etc.. no doubting they have ability but if they just lift that one area (in fact if the whole playing group lifts there disposal effeciency by 10% we will be almost un-beatable

Go pies 2010

I think having the young draftees at this stage is a bit harsh. On players who playeither regular seniors or on the cusp my 5 would be in no particular order:

Cook - hack
Corrie - hack
Reid - done nothing at AFL level
Barham - bad disposal
Maxwell - bad disposal & costs goals due to coughing up the ball ( i know I will be hated for this but still at a loss about how he got AA) (all be it much improved this year) looking at the list struggling to find anyone else except maybe Toovey.

My explanation for the draftees is in my first post, and it is harsh of course.

Of the players who have had games or are on the cusp:

Corrie
Cook
Barham
L.Brown
? - hard, which is good. Maybe Reid based on his AFL games, but I am confident he will be a good senior player next year after his excellent 2nd half of the year in the VFL.

Not everyone rates Maxwell, which is fine, but how you have him ahead of Leigh Brown is an utter mystery.

Corrie - Is by far the worst player on our list
L.Brown - Not up to AFL standerd and is a depth player
Cook- he has had enough time to develop and dont think he will make it.
Wellingham- Softest player on our list and struggles when the preasure on.

Fair point. I thought I had him on the list. Yes I would have the L Brown in front of him but honestly not by that much. I don't mind L Brown.

i would have:
Corrie - agree with Daics by far the worst on our list
Cook - Had enough chances now, but has potential to improve if he snaps out of it, just cant see it happening.
Brown - Backup at best will be playing local footy in 2011.
Barham - just chops the ball up.
Rounds - just untried and probably another year or 2 off being a regular AFL player.

good position to be in, to have a few players in our bottom 5 capable of being good players down the track.

It was noticable in the 'rd 1 team' thread that the Dogs have a very imposing and even looking outfit. The one msg link was a big forward which they may have found with Hall-bags, so I expect them to do well this year. Not sure wether their eveness extends far outside their 22.

I think our 22+ group is pretty servicable at the moment so very nice work.

c'mon mate dont try to gain attention just by sayin a blatantly stupid thing, as if maxwell is even close to being our worst player, i would 'hate you for this" but i realise your probably only a small child who hasnt watched many games so ill spare you...

Corrie
Cook
Barham
L.Brown
Can't decide??? A bit hard to put in players who we havn't seen at AFL level before aswell.

Geez give Leigh a break.
When we needed a backup ruckman - throw in L Brown.
When we needed a backup backman - throw in L Brown.
When we needed a backup forward - throw in L Brown.
How can everyone consider him to be in our worst 5 players !!!!!

Fair enough consider him to be a depth player, but by no means in the worst 5.
