Hands down the worse miss I have ever seen was Troy Cook for Syd against North Melb in 1997 (I think). It was a mudbath game. But he had the ball on the goal line, went back and took a set shot from directly in front, 5m out...

...missed his foot with the drop, it stuck in the mud, he did an airy and most impressive of all, somehow achieved the impossible task of failing to even manage to score a point.
I don't remember that, but I do remember him having a set shot from the goalsquare (after taking an absolute ripper of a mark) in the same match and kicking into the man on the mark.

- Dean Cox in the derby a couple of years ago
- Polak against the Hawks at Launceston a couple of years ago
- Leigh Harding vs. Eagles at TD on Friday night last year (cost the Kangas the game too.)

I'll go with Tony Modra. Took an absolute hanger (again) over Mick Martyn in the goalsquare. Lands and decides to kick it there and then, instead of going back. Skies the ball and in the process hits the post. From no more than 2 feet from goal, he showboatingly kicks a behind. Clap Clap. Otherwise he was an absolute gun.

I was going to mention this one too, but you forgot the weirdest thing. The wind was so strong the other way the ball went a considerable way through the goals, then blew back and hit the back of the post!

I've spent nigh on 20 years arguing about with Dee fans I know... <snip>

For the record:
  • I was sitting on the VFL Park members directly below one of the PA speakers.
  • Stynes ran over the mark before the siren went.
  • The umpire saw and whistled for the 15m penalty as the siren went.
  • He dragged back Grinter or Spalding (?) the 15m while the siren was blaring.
  • 15m penalties can be paid after the final siren.
  • Dee fans should blame the 3 late misses for this loss.

Also for the record:
  1. Your MFC supporting acquaintances aren't real bright.
  2. Exciting, thrilling, heartbreaking finish, sure. Controversial, no. Jimmy messed up, as did Yeats, Campbell and Eishold.
  3. It STILL hurts. ;)

Rowan Jones' miss in the 2006 Preliminary Final was a shocker.

Cameron Ling on debut.

Anthony and Sav Rocca used to miss some absolute sitters in 1998.

Scotty Burns in round 20 against the Power. Could have had dramatic repercussions.

Mercuri in 1999, Burnsy again in the 2003 Qualifying Final from close range, Richard Cole on the run in the 2003 Wizard Cup vs Hawthorn, O'Bree on the run in the 2003 QF.

Big Anthony didn't score from the goal square/line after a mark in the 2002 boilover win against Port Adelaide in the Qualifying Final at AAMI Stadium. He earlier goaled from 55m out on the boundary. :)

Tazza's had some shockers, too.

About half of Essendon's 20+ behinds in the 1999 Prelim. Final

Can't remember name but Sydney v Essendon @ Telstra Stadium a few seasons ago to win the match only 20m out directly in front... missed

Mercuri against Nth Melb in the 2000 QF final, ran into an open goal and missed

Not the worst I've seen, but a worthy mention goes to Richo in the Wizard Cup a few years back against St Kilda. Took a mark 15m out, directly in front then proceeds to hit the post. The ball goes back into play, and St Kilda run it down the ground.

Daniel Kerr vs St kilda this year was probably the best worst miss. After beating a couple of opponents, a bounce and gettng himself clear directly in front, he misses what would have capped a great personal game.

Barry Hall's miss from 25m straight in front during this years grand final. Then another easy miss later in the game.

Cant be bothered reading thread to see if its been mentioned, but I seem to remember modra while at crows landing the footy ON TOP of the post from about half a metre out. One of the strangest things ive seen.

Would have been Tarrant. Sometime, somewhere.

69 posts before his name comes up. the man kicked 2 goals 8 against us in total this year. everytime he had a shot i knew we would be okay. hell in the 1st game he began giving the ball off (by hand) becasue his kicking was so embarassing.
granted we still got beaten but if it wasnt for tarrent i wouldnt have had false hope all afternoon.
