not a bad miss or a skill error per se, but i think it was Chris Grant in the 97 prelim, couldnt quite get foot to ball. excrutiating.

Summed up pretty well. I can remember Eishold's mark vividly, a great grab.Chewy said:Bingo! Worst miss ever.
1987 Preliminary Final. Dees up by a couple of points, a minute to go.
Simon Eishold takes a great overhead mark on the edge of the goal square, 2 metres out from goal. Umpire puts him on a bit of an angle, not too bad though. His chance to be a hero and put Melbourne into the Grand Final, he is overcome by nerves however and shanks the ball at right angles straight through for a point.
Tony Campbell and Graeme Yeats also missed two shots on the run from 30m out directly in front that also would've sealed this game. Funny how the Dee fans always tried to blame the umpires for this loss, instead of blaming 3 of the worst misses ever.

Always cracks me up when a player takes a mark in front goal, shows off and then misses it.
Longy413 said:It was further than that, but he was good enough to kick it. 20m is closer to the mark.

Chewy said:That's because Paul Hudson thought he would try to be the hero instead of shepherding for Grant and they both collided.

I've heard a couple of nasty Irish jokes though![]()
Chewy said:I've spent nigh on 20 years arguing about with Dee fans I know, whether or not the 15m penalty was paid before or after the final siren. No one ever said "exciting finish to the 1987 Preliminary". It was always "controversial finish to the 1987 Preliminary". Controversial because the Melbourne fans were so bitter about that 15m penalty. I think that the mad Dee fan, Derryn Hinch even stormed into the umpire's room after the game demanding answers (true dat!)
For the record:
- I was sitting on the VFL Park members directly below one of the PA speakers.
- Stynes ran over the mark before the siren went.
- The umpire saw and whistled for the 15m penalty as the siren went.
- He dragged back Grinter or Spalding (?) the 15m while the siren was blaring.
- 15m penalties can be paid after the final siren.
- Dee fans should blame the 3 late misses for this loss.
