Our defenders were crook as dogs.

To be fair, Richmond probably peaked too early in 2018. There was a game during the home and away rounds, I think it was round 23 vs the Western Bulldogs (MCG), Richmond won by 3 points but to me they looked off, they didn't look right. The week prior (round 22) against Essendon the Tigers won by 8 points (MCG). I believe Richmond sort of limped to the Finals of that year, thier run and momentum had ended. They beat Hawthorn by 31 points in the Qualifying Final (Hawks ended up doing a straight sets exit).

Then Richmond came up against Collingwood in the Preliminary Final. A virus did go through the club at Richmond, that didn't help Richmond's cause at all but by then the Tigers were cooked, Collingwood weren't cooked, they were firing and playing good footy at the right time. Richmond lost, the Pies advanced to the Grand Final and thats all there is to it.

However, Richmond didn't make the same mistake again, they peaked when it mattered most in a season (Finals footy) in 2019 and 2020 resulting in back-to-back Premierships (to go with the 2017 Premiership).

Not true, they played 2 Football Park finals in 1997. North Melbourne and Carlton who finished outside of the top 4 played home semi finals against West Coast at the MCG due to that infamous deal. But I think North Melbourne would have got a home final anyway, because they were week 1 victors, or West Coast could have got one without that MCG deal, and both were outside the top 4 in 1997. Also, Geelong finished 2nd for example in 1997, but had to play their semi final away after they lost in week 1.

1996 vs Essendon and 1999 vs Carlton were the Semi Finals West Coast played in Melbourne vs teams that lost their week 1 final after West Coast won theirs. West Coast finished above those teams on the ladder but were sent to Melbourne due to the MCG contract because Brisbane were hosting the other semi final in both years, having finished above West Coast.

Interestingly enough, it took til Brisbane themselves had to play a "home final" at the MCG against Geelong in the 2004 prelim for the MCG rule to be altered. Nobody gave a shit until then.

In 1997, West Coast did finish above North and played their semi final against each other at the MCG (5th vs 7th) but in fairness to North, they had won their week one final and West Coast had lost theirs. It was a very questionable setup until they changed to the current final 8 format.

97 was one that got away. You would beat North if that was at subi. Schofield getting injured killed ya. He was on fire. Phil Matera kicking 3.5 also hurt. Jako held Carey all day but Carey kicked the sealer. Blew a 32 point lead.

Yeah, even in the current system, the Adelaide Crows had to play their home semi-final at the MCG in 2002. Also, I think in that 1994-1999 finals system, teams outside the top 4 could potentially host home semi-finals even without the MCG clause, contrary to the current system.

Won their three finals by 7, 1 and 4 points. If you're continuously having to come from behind to win, you're not that good.
What is continuously coming from behind to win exactly?

We only trailed at the end of 1 quarter in all those games. That being half time in the Prelim. And from our wins throughout the year trialed 5 times at 3 qtr time out of 18 wins.

Collingwood 2023 were brilliant. And if you continually come from behind even more so.
If you win your games by 7 points, 1 point, and 4 points (with an inside-50 diff of minus 32 in one of those games), you are skating on your luck a little.

I mean, Collingwood were the best team in 2023 - but holy shit they did dodge a few falling pianos throughout September.

Geelong finished above Adelaide in 97 and the Crows got the home final in the second week so it wasn't just all geared towards the Vic teams.

That finals setup wasn't very forgiving if you had a bad day at the office week 1 of the finals.
