In a Book Club. There appears to be plenty of readers on this board and I thought that perhaps something like this might be a bit of fun.
http://www.popularpenguins.com.au/
On this page there is a link to a spreadsheet listing the 200 Penguin Classics, these are only a tenner each and have good selection of titles, both fiction and non fiction. Perhaps one of these could be the first book?
Given I only thought of this about ten minutes ago and have given no thought to how it would be done, suggestions and advice would be more than welcome.

I would love to, but with uni and a full-time job, plus more of a heightened passion for film, it would be impossible to find the time. However, would love to see this develop, if only for reading and recommendations.

Okay, a cursory glance at the Penguin Classics list and here are ten books that might be fun to start off with.
Horne - The Lucky Country
HST - Hells Angels
Nabokov - Lolita
Doyle - Hounds of the Baskervilles
Shaw - Pygmalion
Jerome - 3 Men in a Boat
Clarke - For the term of his Natural Life
Chandler - Big Sleep
Fitzgerald - Gatsby
Hornby - Fever Pitch
Perhaps a vote for one of these books, or another if someone has a particular title they are dead keen on. After a book has been decided on, we read one (two? three?) chapters a week, one person volunteers to share their thoughts and ideas and others are free to comment and share their own reactions to what is being read.

This is a good idea. I'm on the brink of exams right now though, but would love to contribute during the Winter break.

I'm in.

Only if we do Classics though, my book shelf tends to get a new Penguin/Vintage every week.

Great stuff mate, thoughts on what should be the first book?

Well at the moment I'm in the middle of two: Dubliners by Joyce and Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky.

Dubliners is really enjoyable, and would probably be good for this, because it's segmented into short stories.

However, I'd probably recommend The Hound of the Baskervilles as a group read. Very light, but compelling and a good for discussion.

It is only a chapter or two a week... probably an hour reading tops, I'm in.

I'd go for Gatsby, just because of the interest in it currently.

I second Hound of the Baskervilles.

A couple of chapters a week will be hard to do :p. I find it hard to stop reading once I get going.

I'd like to participate but I might drop in and out a bit.

I'd recommend Three Men In A Boat. It's short, ****ing hilarious and very few people have read it.

This would probably be my choice, I've never read it and a lot of it is set around my old stomping grounds in England.
I don't think it is that important to be continuously involved, it can be a fairly fluid affair as far as participation is concerned I would imagine. As I mentioned early I envisage a person a week volunteering their thoughts on the chapter(s?) and others responding to that.

I'm in too. This thread should be moved to the Book club forum.
I thought about starting it there but I thought that it would probably see a bit more traffic here. Is there any book that you are particularly keen on?

There's a Book Club forum? lol

I'm interested, although I'm not a regular contributor to this forum. Like others my involvement will probably fluctuate from week to week

Hmm a couple chapters a week? I could do this.
What's first up?
3 Men in a boat sounds like a delightful jaunt. The book doesn't sound too bad either.
HIYOOOOO

:thumbsu:

I'm definitely in.

If I could suggest a book to start with. Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger.
