should we throw our hat in the ring if he can't agree to terms with hawthorn?

would he add any value to us?
he is a good ruckman and could teach our young rucks a bit about rucking, could also make things easier for our midfielders, give stevens greater opportunity to run wit the ball rather than have to scrap it out each contest.
help and teach the young guys like murphy, carazzo, bentick etc the art of being effective at stoppages.

mclaren has been good but is a battler and is undersized
french is coming to the end, lot of injures and form dropping off
bryan may not have the desire and application to continue on his initail hardwork
aisake still learning proberly 2-3 years off
batson progressing well in the bullants 2's

i'm not sure if it is the way to go, he would want good money and being a big bloke the risk of him breaking down is greater, meaning we could be tied to a 2-3 year deal.
Are we better off teaching a kid, like we are doing?

Have to admit, have thought of this scenario myself.
Obvious deficiency - French seems to have lost the mantle, Deluca now playing as bench ruckman finally instead of CF, McLaren who held his own on the weekend, shows it really is up for grabs.
But no real outstanding lead ruckman.
With a developing midfield and his ability to be up for big games.
May get 2 seasons out of him.

Would rather trade for a ruckman than midfielder, given our current list.

I doubt you guys would. We'd probably be looking for draft picks and/or a quality young player (Fisher, Simpson) and I doubt you'd part with draft picks.

One word - NO.

Carlton have publically come out and said they are going with the youth policy and they intend to stick to that.

Doubt they would take a risk on a 30+ year old who is a bit of a "head-case".
Yeh, we won't be challenging for the flag any time soon, better to get someone who'll give us 6+ years, rather than 1 or 2.

I doubt that anyone would trade for him now. If he is to change clubs it will be in the pre season draft.

I would be happy if he came to Carlton for 2 final years. He could really help the other young ruckmen out and also players like Murphy, Bentick, Simpson, etc. in that they get great service from bounces and better understanding of where a top class ruck will put the ball for them(not that Murphy needs it so much).

I'd say we'll be targetting kids like Fabian Deluca from Port and John Meesen from Adelaide. Both are Vic boys who've already had a couple of years in the system.

no thanks...whilst spida is a very good player,he is getting on and we don't need him. whilst he would be a good addtion short term, we need to be looking for long term solutions instead.

Agreed. If he was a few years younger then maybe he would look at it but no.

We don't even have enough money to pay for him.

I agree with MeeSo and we should target a Victorian boy like Meesen, Deluca and Maric.
I doubt Maric would want to leave Adelaide considering he's getting game time for a genuine contender. Deluca seems like a realistic chance though. Port are as bad as we are and at least here he'd be close to family and friends.

I'm sure he's a good prospect but I had them in order of preference because Meesen and Deluca are both 200 cms plus. Height is more important for rucks in today's game and Mojo stated Sellar would leap up the rankings if he grew to 200 cms. ;)

McLaren did a really good job this week. I've been a big wrap for getting Willits, Maric or Deluca back from Victoria for a while now. Willits has been playing in defence in the SANFL but looks pretty good and close to AFL size.

Maric is probably staying with Adelaide and Deluca is a top prospect.

I think it'd be worth looking at a Hartlett for Willits trade if Willits wanted home. Just because we have depth in Key Forwards right now.

Apologies to Hartlett fans, I like him too, but you've got to give something to get something.

Ticks on all those boxes you've mentioned Cypher. I'd say he's grown a cm or too but it could just be the short people playing in the SANFL.

There's not the same sort of synergy with the AFL/SANFL as there is the AFL/VFL so it's hard for AFL clubs and coaches to have a say over where a player is positioned at a club. For example Maric last year was playing really well in the SANFL reserves but couldn't crack the senior team even though the Crows wanted him in there.

Glenelg where Willits is playing is short on tall defenders, so that's where he plays. He does ruck as well and did a good job from what I saw. His ruck work at the U/18 champs a couple of years ago was good so I'd imagine it wouldn't have got any worse. He's a ruckman playing CHB basically.

A lot more mobile than Deluca.

Forgive my ignorance, but how are you going to pay him? I can't imagine him going for a paycut to go to a team that isn't performing as well as the one he's at, no matter how disenchanted he is.
