Just a hypothetical, would you support an EPL style competition?

The team that gets the wooden spoon in one league moves down to a 'second tier comp' while the 'premier' of the second comp moves up.

What are peoples thoughts?

Thing is in the EPL the total supporters weight heavily in favour of the big 4 sides and maybe a few more.

In the AFL it's far more evenly spread across 12-13 clubs if not 16. Therefore there's a greater percentage of supporters that would be highly disappointed in seeing their team be relegated.

Thaty myth only applies in Australia, Gazza. There is no longer a 'top 4' with the demise of Liverpool, gradual fall of Arsenal, huge leap of Man City and steady rise of Tottenham.

Thing about Aussie kids' is that their alleigance is generally spread across United, Pool, Arsenal and Chelsea

i watch soccer quite alot, in soccer, a tiered competition is quite normal but in AFL..... NO!!!

Works in the EPL because the country is smaller, with a greater population. Therefore its more "dense" and there is enough support for several levels of competition. Even clubs below the EPL can generate some decent revenue, and draw big crowds when they come up to EPL level. I'm not sure AFL clubs could do the same.

Given the draft/salary cap the AFL is cyclical. If a North Melbourne for example got relegated (no disrespect to them as a club, just financially/supporter wise they aren't in the greatest shape), and spent a couple of years in division 2, would they be able to survive? Also, when they were promoted, how could they compete with the more financially succesful division 1 teams?

It's certainly an interesting and exciting concept in theory, but I don't think it's practical for the AFL in Australia.

Not near enough money going though the AFL to support this like they can in european soccer. Quite a few teams wouldnt survive long in relegation.

I don't think it would work, there's little incentive in the AFL keeping clubs afloat while they kick around in the VFL. Also not enough money to support an extra 3 or 4 teams who will be migrating from VFL to AFL and back.

Would I support my team if the league adopted this concept? Probably.

Do I support the idea of a tiered competition? Nope.

Would kill any idea of tanking.

20 teams. Two tiers of 10. Top 5 for the premiership in the top tier.

Bottom 2 go down.

Top team in Tier 2 goes through. Team 2-6 play final 5 to go through.

Means that essentially 16 teams will be playing Tier 1 or able to play FOR the right to be in Tier 1.

TBH I dont even really like that concept :D but just something I'm throwing up.

Also makes it 18 games as you play everyone in your Tier twice.
