Officially announced now!!!

Nine/Ten have won the Free To Air rights - however Seven have last bid at these rights.

Fox Sports have got the Pay TV rights and Telstra the Internet rights that's final!

Really don't care who gets the free to air rights. The product will be similar any way. But at least we can get Foxtel in Adelaide. Can't get Optus.

Wonder how secure the likes of Sandy Roberts, Drew Morphett etc feel at the moment?

Servo, if you read the Adelaide Board you would have known Drew Morphett was sacked. I posted a message about it the other day, saying wouldn't it be funny if Nine picked him up.....uuugh.

I am a natural born cynic!

This Free To Air result was always going to happen, even if Channel 7's offer was superior. The AFL would have been mad if they didn't force Channel 7 to use their last bid rights. They are in a no lose situation - they have Channel 9 forcing the bar higher and then have Channel 7 trying to jump over it.

THe AFL win by either a large or a larger amount. And the beautiful thing is in 5 years time, they will be able to 'sell' this product again for an even more obscene amount of money.

This is a hallucination and these faces are in a dream. A computer generated environment; a fantasy island you can do anything and not have to face the consequences.

Drew Morphett, John Longmire and Todd Viney all sacked from Seven huh??? WOW didn't know that till I just read this topic.

DAMN, working the hours I do, I miss hearing about EVERYTHING. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

have to disagree with u there cjh 5 yrs down the track ch7 will be out of the picture as far as afl goes and i dont blame them so who will try and outbid kerry?
that 100 mil would be cut down in half a/c no rival bids.
just what kerry wants spend big time at 1st to knockout his rivals.
cheers!

i agree joel ch7 had no chance against packer etc and yes ch7 have the fianl say on free to air but ch7 want the whole package fta,ptv and internet rights
they have said it themselves just having fta isnt viable so therefore pending a court case reagarding ptv then ch7 is dead and buried as far as fta goes unless they can win the court case[if it happens]for pay tv
cheers!

Joel and Tiger of old

Channel Seven slit its own throat on this months ago - it has nothing to do with being able to 'match it' with Packer and Murdoch at all.

Channel Seven has consistently and doggedly refused point blank to telecast AFL football into NSW and Qld at a time when people could actually watch it.

"We will not sacrifice our ratings" is what they have said time and time again in the face of some pretty unrelenting lobbying by the AFL, egged on by footy fans who reside in NSW and Qld.

Given this idiotic truculence by Seven it was always gonna go to the Nine consortium with their committment to expose the game to more people in those states.

As Jackson has repeated time and time again - the money is not the whole story.

They don't want the game on TV in NSW and Qld - they have paid the price.

cheers

yes bsa i agree ch7,s refusal to broadcast into the sydney and brisbane market did go part of the way to the afl accepting the packer deal however money having nothing to do with it? i disagree the afl is their to prepresent all the clubs and money was the no1 priority in the afl,s objectives.if it was down to getting more exposure for syd and bris fans[in which i agree with]why then would all of a sudden the tv rights more than dble from what ch7 had payed for previously all the afl had to instruct was to show more games into syd and bris and if ch7 didnt show in their breifing for the bids to show more games into syd and bris then yes they have shot themselves in the foot.
do u really think ch7 were stupid enuff not to show games into bris syd if it was viable to do so?
bris and syd are and always will be rugby league states no matter how much the afl try to push aussie rules into those states.
that is the bottom line.
ch9 will telivise into bris and syd because they wanted the afl rights at whatever cost.
but having said all that u all up in the northern states have got your wish and goodluck to u all.
cheers!

I agree with you Tiger of Old. The reason why the value of this round of TV rights is so high is because of the competition between 7 and 9.

What if there is no competition in 5 years time? What if 7 say screw you hippies, you can keep the footy? The value of the next lot of TV rights will be reduced.

So much for the afterglow

In 5 years time the pay television rights will probably be more than the free to air rights. This is because more and more people will be likely to get cable tv. Thus the pay tv operator's will "probably" offer much more for the right's than today

Furthermore, isn't it "easier" to make a more profit's out of cable tv rather than free tv(that's what I've heard).

So, in all likelyhood, the AFL will get more money than this time around, especially if more people from Sydney and Brisbane watch AFL coverage.
