Watched Yarraville play west foots on Saturday.

How is West Footscray's ground acceptable to play on?

West should bite the bullet and move to the spare oval on the curve of Churchill Avenue near the Ballarat Rd intersection. Must be difficult to recruit where they are now.

Wests should move or upgrade , shocking ground . Why is nth foot playing south of where wests play anyway ? Wont be long to a merger or two .

Early tips for this week:
NP by 10 Goals over AV (don't rate the cobras and powers pressure is huge)
ML over PS by 5goals (stiff to be winless. will bounce back at home)
NF over WF by 15 Goals(West shouldnt bother showing up)
YSE by 2goals over PC (YSE to show why they are the powerhouse of the division in a tough contest)

I haven't been there in about 10 years but surely the clubrooms have been upgraded. Made Deer Parks old rooms look good.

Yeah think the social rooms had a bit of an upgrade but not much else. Why would council invest $$ into that oval.
Parkside have good facilities and to my understanding have no juniors so could that be an option?
Another option is to put them on an adjoining oval near Nth Foots on the 2nd oval where cricket is played. But there isn’t enough juniors for 2 clubs in that area either. Sooner or later they need to merge with a club. Surely it makes sense to merge with Nth Foots as they are the same colours. Design a new jumper incorporating red & white and re name the merged club Footscray Districts (or something similar) keep the history of both clubs.
I would try to align with Footscray VFL in some way like a feeder club. Could they get a few players from there. But that would involve them playing div1.

Surely that’s a win/win..

Are you referring to Dobson Reserve Maidstone? Better ground just unsure on the facilities there.

Yeh Dobson reserve. Is fenced, has a better surface and a newish pavillion, although not big. WRFL has been played there previously by a club that's not around anymore (Sunshine VRI). Wouldn't currently be big enough for a club like West but council more likely to invest there rather than their current home.

Think some other club used Dobson Res for a season when there Oval was getting resurfaced.. Used to be the home of Sunshine Druids Cricket Club many years ago before they switched to Skinner Res. I remember that pavilion as had a quite nap whilst waiting to bat after a big Friday night. Lol

Lots of history with both clubs. North are obviously doing ok. I play cricket close by and we had 5 under 11 teams so obviously there are kids in the area playing sport. Both clubs just need to tap into that and give them a reason to come to there club.

That’s great to hear there are kids in the area but it’s the volunteers that are needed to do all the work to set up programs and build a structured pathway program. I think Nth are doing ok butt a merger would strengthen the clubs and hopefully build from there. Of all perspective merges in local footy this one would be pretty simple with both wearing identical colours and both have similar names. Otherwise it’s only a matter of time before West fold and Nth will just continue to play in the lower divisions. I think merging “could” strengthen the clubs to remain viable going forward.

West are fielding 12 teams this season (5 more than 2017), including 9 in under 14 level and below. Five more teams than last season. Can't see them needing to merge or fold any time soon. Just need better facilities.

Look at Yarraville/Seddon though. Wouldn't say theres much of Seddon left in that merger. They were also a great club full of history. Saw YSE wearing Yarraville jumpers recently so is there also a thought to wear Seddon jumpers now for a game?

Talking about mergers, I thought I'd look at the points of the teams to see how they'd travel if merged. Lo and behold the points system seems to broken and not just div 2, all 3 divs. Including the round 1 div 1 CS game. Teams should have a minimum of 22 points for 22 players but there are blanks everywhere (each player must be a minimum of 1 point). Is the wrfl player points system just unwell or is it now a Clayton's player points system?

I noticed that also but it’s a common issue as it’s the same in the EDFL. Must be a glitch somewhere..

That’s great and hence my opinion on a possible merger as it also will strengthen the junior teams and make them more competitive and build a base for future senior players down the track. If West didn’t have juniors then they wouldn’t have much to offer in a merger. You need a good junior base and multiple teams in age groups to strengthen the club..

Spot on. Massive increase in Junior teams and now a Womens team and junior womens teams on the horizon. Wests need another ground to fit everyone in, not a merger to share another ground.

Agree on the condition of the ground, although it is hardly contributing to broken legs every week..Surely this is a council thing and it should be knocked on the head. Thousands of kids and adults play competitive sport over summer and winter on the ground. It is in the councils best interests to get it sorted out. And maybe add a couple of extra lights, so night games can be held....that would be too simple a solution though wouldn't it.

It was only 4-5 years ago when West were beating up North, over a 100 year history there are peaks and troughs. Great to see North and Yarraville's kids coming through and them being given preference over mercenaries and has beens. With U14s going well Wests are only 2-3 years off being able to play some juniors at Senior level. This should be the focus of every side in the comp, any other strategy is not sustainable.

Well said ....at North we have 5 u19s playing in our seniors with another 3 playing ressies and wont be long before they get a go. That's what its all about playing young men not mercenaries .

NP 7 goals over ALB (power too strong, can they play away?)
Lakes 4 goals over Parkside ( Parkside have played the 2 top sides, this should be a good test for them)
NF 12 goals over WF (Should be easy the battle over the scrays)
YV 2 goals over PC (Big test for PC, should be an interesting game to see where they sit)

Great post. But still believe to keep history and move forward rather than jog up & down, you need to look at ways to become successful and build something to become a force In this comp

Agree, it's the logical way to go and its what I'd be recommending. But too often the decisions are made with the heart not the head. From what I've seen clubs usually hit rock bottom before looking at merger. Having healthy senior and junior sides is the ultimate aim and with the player points you need the one pointers.

If NP just announced Hobson Bay Council to fund $1.2m to upgrade facilities at Bryan Martyn Oval, surely the Maribyrnong Council will chip in to help repair and upgrade the quality of WF. Even if that means relocating for a season like many clubs have done before.
