Wrist Issues, different way to do weights?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

My right wrist requires a reconstruction hopefully at the end of the year, this makes it incredibly tough for me to lift weights due to it being a grip issue, I was wondering if anyone knows how to lift weights using my forearm, or a different way that wouldn't put strain or stress on my wrists? This has been an ongoing injury for about 3 years now.

Thanks!

Wrist or Shoulder injuries make it very difficult to train properly, for now you could probably just concentrate on lower body and core. Machine exercises which need less stabiliser activity would take some pressure off, but there is really no way to take all.

Alternatively, if you absolutely need to train, You could also strap up your wrist very very tightly with boxing type wraps. People do this often when training very heavy pushing exercises to minimise wrist involvement.

I'll mention a wrist strengthening exercise that was a staple in a gym I trained at years ago for what it's worth:

A weight on the floor has a rope attached to it. At the end of the rope is a wooden handle. You hold the handle with both hands and the rope attachment is in the middle of your hands. You twist the wooden handle, and as you do the rope wraps around the handle and the weight lifts off the floor getting ever closer to your hands. You basically wind the weight up and down and it works the wrists so much they burn.

While that is an OK exercise and would possibly increase strength, i believe it would aggravate his wrist too much. His goal is to remove strain on his wrist.

I hear what you are saying. But the reason I mentioned that exercise is it might help strengthen his wrists. Obviously he'd need to start with a light weight and work up.

Only posted it for what it might be worth.

Cheers for those suggestions and input, I was at the gym last night and monday night and certain machines I can do, such as ones where I pull towards myself or down from above my head are okay, I have it set on roughly the third or fourth weight rung.. I think its about 40kg which doesnt hurt my wrist.. any more and my wrist starts hurting bad.

However machines where I push outwards from my hands cause major pain to my wrist so I am steering away from them.

Is it worth just pushing through it until the surgery in hopefully december or early next year, or just skipping weights completely?

If I were you I'd seek a medical opinion on that first. Ask your surgeon or your physio.

Well my surgeon had said that I could play AFL if I wanted as he doesn't believe it could get injured any worse, however parents put me off that in case it does.

Its a beak ligament tear if anyone knows about ligaments.

See if you can get it done asap because you won't be able to do weights until you have done the rehab

You shouldn't be doing weights if you have got wrist and hand issues. You will make your problem worse to fix.

I honestly don't think it can get worse. It's pretty ****ed as it is, weights make it sore the next day but then it goes back to normal like 12 hours later.

Ask the surgeon's opinion on whether you should be lifting weights or not. Otherwise you will only be guessing and perhaps taking unnecessary risk.
