I also think it's intentional. Think they'll be bowing out from the gaming market eventually.
Surely it’s only a matter of time before they sunset the game pass service. Won’t be this year but likely at the very end of the console generation.

I haven’t followed the Xbox rumours, but I doubt they are making another console themselves.

I also follow the thinking it's to eventually phase out Game Pass as they will probably still come out in front with the increase. If Game Pass and the profit share hasn't been as profitable as they first hoped then increasing the cost for those who stay will go towards covering the difference while they make more from increased sales by the traditional model. I've definitely come out way in front with Game Pass but all good things must come to an end I guess.

They won't be bowing out of gaming but will probably become a third party publisher and drop hardware

IMO licensed or partnered hardware. There were articles a year or two ago that in the future Xbox will be licensed but open to companies like Lenovo, Asus etc to create their own Windows based Xbox. They've invested a fair bit into the Windows gaming OS update that's rolling out to handhelds and I assume the eventual goal is to have third parties license the Xbox brand like the new Xbox Ally to create their own Windows based consoles and like the handhelds have access to all PC storefronts.

The sad part is, Xbox hardware team is fantastic.
From controller ergonomics to XSX internal design with splitting the mother board in half.

They had momentum with the 360 but any chance they had for long term success was buried with the Xbox One disastrous reveal and the Don Mattrick comments that followed it.

Cancelled mine a while ago now when I got the switch 2, the only games I was playing semi often were NBA , MLB and WWE which can get on the switch 2 now and convenience suited me more than framerates and graphics.

The only thing that kept me from selling the Series X was the lure of GTA 6. Won't be signing back onto game pass anytime soon that is for sure.

So in the span of only a couple of months, we've seen:

1. Console price increases.
2. Consoles being pulled from their very few, remaining markets.
3. A $1000 third-party handheld that is limited.
4. GP restructured with price increases.
5. They also just recently shuttered The Initiative who was their only real developer built from the ground up.

This is the cue for the brand being dead in the traditional sense.

Seems like the long-term play is as they slowly dissolve into just a publisher - to extract what $ they can now whilst pushing people in the direction of PC so that the faithful can have their libraries preserved.

ABK deal was worse than Don Mattrick.

I wouldn’t say the One reveal killed the brand although it certainly left a bad taste in the mouth of the online community. Most people who buy consoles wouldn’t have heard of that.

What killed it was not being a console worth owning (unless your friends get it). It was more expensive than the PS4 and had one of the worst exclusives libraries if not the worst out of any big console.

Well i think gaming has peaked, if anything the number of people who play games will only decrease in years to come.

Becoming way to expensive and AAA belters take like 10+ years to release.

I haven't had an active subscription for months now, and that's with still having a few older 12 month gold codes from when I went on a splurge many years ago (Dick Smith clearance sales back in the day). Yes they won't convert to a true 12 month period (think they'd be worth 3 months each for Game Pass ? haha).

Do I share my history yet again ? sure why not :p. I was solidly on the Playstation platform and was hyped up the wazoo for the PS3...... had built up a football department style "warchest" budget for it by the time it SHOULD have come out in Australia.... the release got delayed in our region.

Around that time a relative got given an Xbox 360 and passed it on to me. I ended up spending my PS3 warchest money..... on a crap load of Xbox 360 games + accessories (controllers, battery packs etc). Wouldn't have thought that it was possible but I loved it. Even when I finally got the PS3 (June 2008 - MGS 4 bundle), I still spend 99% of my gaming time on the 360.... and the PS3 would get sporadically (at least once a month to check for the PS+ games, sometimes would only SERIOUSLY use it every few months).

I got a PS4 before I got an Xbox One..... but even when I did that I was still using the 360 more, and the Xbox trend continued when I got the Xbox One and "retired" the 360.

I love the Xbox ecosystem, I prefer the achievement points vs the Playstation trophies.
I still prefer the first Xbox 360 dashboard I was exposed to (before the New Xbox Experience in 2008/2009)
I prefer the Xbox design controller vs the "Dual Sense" - (although I retain a soft spot for the original PSX/PS2 designs).

There's barely been a month where I wasn't subscribed to GOLD or even the early Game Pass years.
Game Pass was great, I got value from it, played a lot of games I wouldn't have purchased physically or digitally at full price. Saving thousands, while still contributing to the Xbox bottom line. In addition to the subscription, I would still buy games digitally - during game sale periods but also I've purchased my fair share of titles that was leaving the Game Pass service... and I purchased to keep playing them.

I got the Series S when I couldn't secure a Series X, when I got the Series X... I still used the Series S for quite a while as I was too lazy to disconnect it (t'was in my main lounge room). I traded in the Series S and Series X consoles last year to "sidegrade" to the Galaxy 2TB Series X design.

Not sure if I'll resubscribe fully - I'll easily do it with the PS+ service, even with their price rises... I'm getting value for money there again with the amount of games I've played (that I otherwise wouldn't have if I wasn't subscribed) so I'm saving $$$$ in doing so. Not currently subscribed to the Nintendo service - might do so toward Christmas time (was going to re-subscribe if/when I got a Switch 2).

Funny thin is with my usage patterns since March/April, I'm still on the xbox a bit..... not taking the gaming on the console seriously though. I'll play the occasional game but it's otherwise on "automated" while I'm phsycially on the PS5 or PC or Dwitch (or everything at once!).

Had an xbox gold subscription for many years priced at $14.99 p/m thru Telstra. A couple of months ago Telstra canceled their service for xbox game pass. So bought directly thru Microsoft on the xbox, at the new price of $19.99 p/m. Then today get word from MS that this service is now $29.99 p/m. So within a few months the price has doubled.

Interesting given that's not the Australian pricing

Thread is less than an hour old so who knows but I saw one or two confirmations in the thread. Oddly the email announcing it has disappeared from my inbox. (a Hotmail address). Not saying there is anything there but its not in my trash either and I certainty wouldn't have gone to my trash and deleted the email from there

Even if true that's of no use to everyone who may have already cancelled as it says you will be charged the new amount

Post has been removed now anyway.

I haven't cancelled mine yet as my next roll over still says the current price. But I'll cancel the moment I see it change.
