I've got to say, particularly to HBF and Gilly, I've had a shit day, in fact week, was ranting and raving at the family when I got home and then I watch Chrissy! He put a smile on my face like this, :D, especially when I thought of those douchebags that wrote him off after his first year, being uprooted across the other side of the country etc. Well done!:thumbsu: Not saying he's there yet, before anyone jumps all over me, but was great to watch the Chris Yarran I know in action tonight.

Hey Swannies, thanks for that....hope your week picks up :thumbsu:

He's special. Very special. I don't think he'll fully realize his freakish potential for at least a few more years. He could....could end up being a great of the game.

His composure is that of a 200 gamer. The ability to hold it up,under pressure and wait for the best option is not something to be glossed over.

It was like he was in a park with his mates. Outstanding awareness :thumbsu:

are all the haters slowly getting off the bandwagon yet?? he's a kid!!

played a great game imo last night, his poise on the gibbs pass & his patience with the betts pass were outstanding, could have easily bombed away but did the team thing! looked a little more settled and relaxed last night, classy disposal and deceptively quick. Coupled with eddie their defensive pressure was & will be awesome. Can see him playing some big games this year, where im sure he will still have inconsistant moments and go into his shell at times.

All the best yazza more than happy with u at number 6!

I must admit, it was nice to see last night, when the ball hit the ground that instead of giving a spray the forwards actually competed and tried to win it back.

It wasn't as weird watching without F as I thought.:thumbsu:

Agreed.

That first five minutes, when Waite, Henderson and Setanta all lead and marked strongly, was a beautiful thing to watch. These three talls will only continue to grow into their roles without Fev's dominating presence.

And back on topic, I was so pleased for Chris Yarran last night. The scariest part is, he kicked his three goals without having an outstanding game. Was good, no doubt, but when this guy puts it all together, he will feast on opposition defences. A great start to the year from a player I have the utmost faith in. :thumbsu:

I watched quite bit of yazz playing for swan districts so I know what he can do. Unfortunately some people were very happy to write him off after one season.

I think the key to him playing good footy is him being happy in himself and feeling part of the team. You could tell last night that he was happy just playing footy and celebrating with his team mates.

I cant wait for the day he builds up his stamina that he can get in the midfield and then you will really see some tricks.

Funny you should say that, i watched before the count down ball up, and the YazMan went up to each of the debutants and gave big congrates and spoke to all of them specially Hendo:):thumbsu:

Lads,

I watched alot of Chris Yarran in his time at the Swan Districts, at both Colt level and league. He always stood out as a bloke with composure and a turning circle no greater than a penny.

Last year Chris had to come to terms with not being his sides first option when they entered the forward 50, he was played as a lead up forward at Colt level and league, and as we all saw he put in some phenomenal games, kicking 7 on league debut for the Swans.

Playing in the same forward line as Fev it was clear that he had been told to push further up the ground to create space for Fev then double back to pick up any crumbs, he hadnt done that since he was 16.

For the past 2 years he was the bloke who had space cleared for him.

With that experience, it simply adds to his game, no doubt he'll have a better understanding of his own crumbing ability and it's pretty clear that it added to his defensive game as well, never saw his tackling and chasing, or not much at the Swans, where it was all out attack.

Last year should not be looked at in a negative light, it has served him well, he's clearly a more well rounded player and there's no reason he cannot pick up 40+ goals this season now that he and Eddie appear to be the two go to men. :thumbsu:

I really appreciate the kind words from a few of you westerners. It's great to see that your love for the kid survived the AFL draft and his becoming a Carlton player. All the best with your own young guns this year.

Hope this doesn't develop into a Rich / Yarran thread. I've always supported the Yarran pick, because of the club's reason for picking Yaz over Rich - specifically the Blues have a strong midfield at the time of the pick (Judd, Murphy, Gibbs), and were looking for a forward specialist, which is why Yaz was picked. It was also hoped that Yaz would develop into a midfielder later in his career. Rich is viewed as a pure mid.

The other thing that amazes me is how the whole career of a player (both Rich & Yaz, and others for that matter) be judged on their first season alone? Just doesn't make sense

You wouldn't want that now Ex man LOL ;)

It's interesting we're getting so many reports from people out west regarding Yarran.
Great sportsmanship from the lads and a surprising amount of well wishing for our no. 13
Well done :thumbsu:

No kids deserve to be ragged on, besides Chris is responsible for Naita taking up and loving his footy! :D But seriously, Naita was asked this week who were the best juniors he played with/against. I bet you can guess the 2 names he provided? Yarran and Rich! Lot of good kids that year.:thumbsu:

One passage that hasn't been mentioned here is the chase and tackle he made in our forward 50 resulting in the ball spilling to Setanta who thumped a long goal (just after he missed that set shot, 3rd qtr I think). So there's 3 goals himself plus 3 he assisted, and that's without watching the game again.

One thing we've really lacked is enough players who can kick accurately into our forward line. Grigg, Simmo, Carrots and Walks really struggle to put it lace out to a forward. Yarran was so precise in this aspect last night that it made me smile at the prospect of an important piece of the premiership puzzle slotting into place. To coin a new phrase, he can play the forward-line-quarterback role beautifully.

Go Yaz.

Yarran was the most talented footballer taken in that draft. Everyone knows that. The question mark was always whether he'd be able to demonstrate that talent consistently at AFL level. Early days, but the signs are good. Rich was the safe-bet, but the Blues have a strict policy of going for the best talent available with first round picks no matter what. Delighted with our decision.

:)

As you should be parrot.:thumbsu: He was the one that I said if the Eagles didn't take Naita then Yarran would be my only other choice. But I get accused of being biased towards the Swans boys. :D

Good game, definately did not look lazy last night.. His defensive pressure was the stand out, looked a lot quicker this year and closed in to effect numerous tiger rebounds.

Harks, at the end of 2008, just after the draft, I remember picking up a hitchhiker in Lorne, he was a Victorian who had just got back from working in WA where he followed Swan Districts.

He raved about Yarran, basically couldn't speak highly enough of Yarran's ability and commented what a great pick he was. (the hitchhiker was a Geelong supporter).

Yaz will be exciting, he'll probably be inconsistent throughout the year etc, but he's great to watch already and can't wait till he becomes a little older and starts spending time in the midfield.

great effort by yaz, good to see him showing off what us swan districts supporters knew he had. will only keep improving and looks set for a solid year at the blues. such a clever player when on his game :thumbsu:

Regardless of who else we might have taken in that draft, Chris Yarran looks like he'll be a fantastic player for Carlton.

He and Betts will have some defences absolutely beside themselves as they pressure, chase, harrass, create, and then finish their chances with ruthless accuracy.

Just love watching the guy play, because his skills are so effortless and natural. Balance, poise, smarts and pace. When he gains possession within 80m, you know he's already working out ways to trick the defenders and gain an extra 40m for a shot on goal, or dish it off to a team-mate within range. With Eddie now taking his game to another level, these 2 small forwards will be especially dangerous and are going to demand a lot of opposition homework. Either can kick 5 goals in a heartbeat. Having the most powerful midfield in the AFL feeding them is another advantage.

:)
