Was particularly poor tonight. Viney just echoed my sentiments on SEN. Was disinterested, didn't provide any run, didn't demand the ball, didn't provide an option.

When he got the ball looked quite silky, but yeah, spat the dummy it seems. Is it that he can't deal with the hard tag?

No idea what was wrong, I suppose it must have all stemmed from the tag. He was great during the preseason in almost every game so it's a real disappointment to see him drop his head tonight.

I still expect a break out season.

Yaz was tonight's biggest disappointment IMO, but there's no reason to worry.

Didn't look interested and clearly couldn't deal with the tag they put on him, but he'll learn from it, and that is what is most important.

I can see why they left him down back for so long despite it being clear that he wasn't getting a sniff of it, but I reckon the MC should have made the switch a little earlier to get him further up the ground and involved in the game.

He'll be right.

Very hard to get involved when you've got a hard tag in defense. Your whole game revolves around getting free and receiving the ball, unlike the midfield where you can go and win it yourself.

A lot of players struggle with a defensive forward and it's something Yarran will have to learn to deal with, as he's too damaging a player to be given much liberty. Will be a steep learning curve methinks, but hopefully the club perseveres with it.

How many 20 year olds can deal with a hard tag? It is a massive compliment to Yaz that he is already being tagged on the basis of a few practice games playing on a half back flank. Even Judd has struggled to shake tags at times (I remember a match against Essendon where Welsh had his measure & Judd just went through the motions).

Give the kid time. He will learn from this.

You're right that it's gonna be a challenge for Yarran copping a tag already but Judd copped a huge knock to the head early in that game banging heads with Lloyd, said he couldn't even remember playing and it caused him to miss the following week.

Yeah, it'll be a good learning experience for him. If you're gonna have the speed, power and acceleration coupled with the skills this kid has, you're gonna have to be prepared to deal with hard tags so this is important for him. He'll be fine :)

the ball was barely at halfback for carlton in the first half. Carlton had 90% territory so that instantly diminishes a lot of chances to rack up disposals. Also i saw about half a dozen times where Yarren was in the vicinity and could've recevied handballs or wateva but he just wasn't the best option at the time so he got overlooked. It's all good to say we expect him to create run but when the ball isn't in the area and the other team isn't scoring many points it's pretty hard to generate a lot of run. He defs didn't have a good game but theres a lot more reasons to it then just 'oh he had a hard tag and he didn't work hard enough' or wateva.

The worst part about his game tonight was that he was 5/10m+ away from his opponent. His player was goalside far, far too often. Really needs to defend first, attack second. In the 3rd Q Yarran left his opponent to attack a groundball which Richmond already ahd 2 more players at than us...he was never going to win it. Then Richmond cleared it and White, Yarran's opponent, was left by himself to take an easy uncontested mark on the boundary line 20m from goal. Quick kick to Riewoldt, mark, goal.

It's clear he doesn't have a complete understanding of defensive positioning yet.

Really disappointed that Ratten didn't put him on the wing or at HFF as well. It was quite clear he had no idea what do with the tag and he needed to get the ball to get some confidence

Early days yet though. We know what he's capable of :thumbsu:

That's alright. You need games like this to learn. If you don't have these opportunities you don't get to be any better.

Hopefully he and Mitch Robinson have a discussion at some point during the week. It, surprisingly, may help him to hear from a player who has played that role successfully for us. It can't hurt.

He was poor for the first 3 quarters, but I actually thought he was quite good in the last when he seemed to be playing around the wing and pushing forward. He's a natural forward, and he lighted up being closer to goals. I'm still not convinced on the Yarran to HB experiment. Reckon he's best suited to attacking midfielder/forward role.

:)

Well said. :thumbsu:

I was going to say the same thing, the Tigers had barely any of the ball inside their 50 so he didn't get the opportunities that he would in most games.

With that said he became discouraged too much and didn't work as hard as he should have. He'll learn and be better next week, that I am 100% sure of.

Gee
I wish we'd taken Rich.FFS

After his preseason ; he was always going to get a hard tag
We''ll be a better team when we can overcome this as a team.

Hr'll be a jet but he'll be better as the year goes on

Spot on, the ball was barely in Richmonds forward line for 3qtrs.

It's early days yet, but if it turns out that Yarran can't cope with tags, it might be worth a try to have him doing the tagging on a high-impact player. I don't think the opposition would tag the tagger. Any thoughts?

WTF? Are people serious?

He was being heavily tagged - Matthew White was into him at every occaision. Richmond knew about the threat of Yarran from the HB line due to his exposed pre-season form, and gave him an aggressive tag that I doubt he has ever had to endure before.

Yarran has struggled for a couple of years to find his feet at AFL level. Fitness and consistency being his main weaknesses.

Now after one pre-season he's supposed to be a world beater? At 20yo he hasn't even played 25 games yet.

Lesson: Don't over-hype your players. Comparisons to Andrew Mcleod are a little premature... :o

The fact is that Chris Yarran has probably never been tagged whilst playing on a half back flank. Sure, he was poor, and we hope that he'll learn to deal with it, but show me a player who can automatically step in to an AFL tag and play well at that age. Not many. He did a couple of good things though.

no doubt struggles but i have got no worries with this kid. will be a star. i think it is great he got tagged first up, would hae learnt so much from it last night. Will be a better player for it. By the end of the year will be running amok down there.

He was looking to run-off and create though. I did not necessarily see the head drop, I thought he kept trying to provide an option.

Tough gig when the ball is at the other end of the ground, and you're being tagged in your first ever AFL game at half back.

I think the preseason showed he'll tear teams up if left un-checked.
