cyril was catching him until plays started running interference, jetta wasn't going full pace either but this wasn't a straight line race.

taking cyril one on one, head on, it woud have been a different story

Cyril started at the contest (Jetta 5m in front and already running), and had cut the distance down to 2m, and was closing. Had to run around Goodes (who tried to shephard but wasn't quick enough to do more than change Rioli's angle - turns out that was enough).

Once Jetta hit top speed, Rioli could only maintain the gap, but couldn't close. Cyril's quicker the first 15-20, but Jetta has a better top speed.

True, but Rioli doesn't have to worry about running with and bouncing a ball.

But in the spirit of this thread, you'd be a fool to try take on Cyril. He'll get you 90% of the time!

Jetta told my mate the same thing in Nov of last year.

My mate was chatting with Jetta at a function when he put the question to him. Jetta (apparently a good guy) said that he thought he'd be caught up & was thankful that it wasn't straight line / even start.

All irrelevant history now.

Can Jetta tackle as well as Cyril?? I don't know, I make it a habit not to watch Sydney.;)
He might not be a quick, but you rarely get out of one of his tackles.

Sadly not! It's an area that Jetta needs to work on.

It's no secret that I wish we had drafted Cyril rather than Veszpremi in 07, and I'm glad we won't be facing Cyril this week!

Jetta is a jet and awesome to watch in full flight but he is not as rounded a player as Cyril.
One thing you don't do to Cyril is try to side step him or waltz around him. That is pure madness.

He must have vice like fingers and arms because he does not need much to grip onto to but once he has, you are not getting rid of him easily.

Cyril was ranked 5th in the AFL rankings... not bad at all. Love his effectiveness with the ball... but its work off it that is always a marvel.

You don't take him on... you just don't - it should now be written in the League Rule book! hahaha

He is amazing... all Australian this year for sure if not for the damn hammy. Bloody hell

I recall last year a similar one v Essendon when we were tearing them a new one. I think it was Heath Hocking who tried to take him on and I pretty much yelled that out "Lol, you idiot. That's Cyril FFS."

there's only a handful of guys that would back themselves against rioli in terms of taking him on, the obvious one is jetta, think yarran, garlett and armfield are just as quick as well. They would be the only players i can think of that would have enough justification to take him on.

In terms of a running race there's a number who'd have Cyril's measure...especially as he needs to be told not to run more than 15m from now on to prevent hamstring injuries.

In terms of breaking through a Rioli tackle I'd say Dangerfield, Selwood & JPK are the only ones who'd have a right to try.

selwood would try because he would instantly duck the head and get the free kick, dangerfield is 100 miles an hour all the time, great player but i rekon at times he needs to take a breath and settle down a bit.

Yep, there's definitely a difference between taking him on in a straight line run and trying to put the moves on him.

One of my fav Cyril moments was his PWNAGE of Nathan Bock for the Crows in the middle of the ground back in 2008 or 2009... The look on Bocks face when he realised that Cyril had put him in the football equivalent of a full nelson was absolutely awesome!!
