I'd take Nic Naitanui first. Absolute freak ruckman and a guy you can build a team around. It's not just those taps he can get with his leap but that sheer contested ball winning ability and ability to then burst away is just without equal for a ruckman and really something special we just haven't seen before.

Josh Kennedy (Sydney) would be my second guy. League leader in contested possession and clearances last year and durability is outstanding. Best midfielder in the competition in my view and ability forward of centre also underrated with his strong marking game and ability to kick goals.

Ablett and Franklin would be the others in this conversation and would be my 3rd and 4th picked respectively with Pendlebury in that 5 spot.

Jeremy Cameron, Toby Greene and David Swallow may also enter this conversation soon enough with further improvement but I'd like to see a couple more years from each before I talk about them in the same sentence as Franklin, Ablett and Pendlebury.

Best number one pick of recent years would be Nick Reiwoldt, then Luke Hodge, Trent Cotchin, Marc murphy, Brent Deledio, Brendon Goddard.

Unfortunately I already voted, but isn't the thread supposed to be about who you'd take at pick 1, if all the lists were cleared and all the teams were starting from scratch?!

On that basis, I would go:

1. Patton - huge potential KPF with his whole career ahead of him.
2. Whitfield - similar to above, but an outside mid
3. Andrew Swallow - Can build a team around him in the midfield, and has more years left than the players below (except Scully who I don't rate)
4. GAJ - Similar to Swallow, but only has a few years left
5. Goddard - Not as good as GAJ, but more years left than Swan
6. Scully - Don't really rate him
7. Swan - too old now, only 1-2 years left
