Pretty amazing really. Gaff will be put straight in from the word go and is a decade player for your footy club.

Darling would have been top 10 had the two incidents and a bit of form due to injury not affected him. This won't matter when he knuckles down and becomes a great key forward which you have craved for a very long time.

Lycett will be a great option for you guys (should have been top 15) in a few years when Cox decides to call time on his career forming a great act with NickNat.

I must say you guys and North seem to have used your top 30 selections to amazing effect.

This draft panned out very well for you guys.

I must say that the closer one looks into drafting the more one becomes confused with some of the decisions made. Lycett was an obvious 1st round choice and to slip to #29 was just plain ridiculous. I know that midfielders are super important but recruiters fail to recognize (or at least they SEEM to fail to recognize) that ruckman who can accurately tap a ball actually dictate the play. It seems all recruiters follow each other like sheep with the current bandwagon being dictated by the sub rule and the need for run.

Was surprised Darling dropped so low as well, but TBH the biggest surprise in this draft was Atley. If he's not better than numerous others who went before him I'll eat my hat. North should be laughing all the way to the bank on this.

We should all note that it takes ~ 4 season for a ruckman to become a consistent contributor. There are a lot of coaches who don't have 4 years to fix their teams, so in that way, unless the ruckman can contribute as a forward or is very athletic, the pick is a project/long-term pick. Guys like Kreuzer and Naitanui are very much the exception, but a Leuenberger, Clark, etc are more the rule. A good mid or flanker can contribute from season 1.

Its also true that 1 club had an inordinate amount of high picks in this draft which skews (or magnifies) the "slide" - if Gold Coast decided that they didnt want you, that automatically dropped you an extra 7 or 8 spots... Lycett or Darling at 18 and 20 makes more sense ...

Also, its true that clubs with only one pick inside Top 30 will likely prioritise their absolute need especially when they know that next year will be a similar draft. So if a decent mid is available and they need mids (as almost everyone does) they will pick the best mid. Not many clubs absolutely needed a ruckman - we had the luxury of 3 top 30 picks ... most of those other clubs (sans GC) had 1.

It speaks a lot for the club in trade week. They ignored all the offers and didn't cave into public pressure which seemed to want to see action. This long term view is what holds the club in good stead.

Everything you say makes perfect sense. Its just that every clubs fallback position is "best midfielder" - just goes to show where coaches believe the game is won and lost nowdays.

Question if I may Eagle87 (and others) given the "importance of midfielders"

-- Should both Rich and Jetta become available end 2011,
1) which one should WC target and
2) would you offer their 1st round pick for the privledge (considering its likely to be between 4 and 12).
3) would the 1st rounder be enough

I think Rich is unbelievably important to that team. They are going to lose a lot of senior mids in the coming years. If WC want him I think they will have to lose a valuable player not just a draft pick; maybe a Gaff if he shows a lot next season. Personally I don't think it's worth it.

WCE should target both. Shake as many trees as possible and see what falls out. First rounder and a little pressure would get the job done for jetta i would have to say.

Would be a first rounder + a young player for rich even if he wanted to come home you would have to think. Something along the lines of pick 14 and swift/ebert/shuey is what they would want. We would only offer up pick 14 and maybe an ash smith or koby stevens instead.

Way over-valuing Jetta IMO. He went for a pick in the mid teens - and it's not as though he has set the world on fire and some of his kicking has been downright ordinary.

Rich would be a great target - and the reality is - with players being uncontracted - clubs are more likely to be agreeable to a trade if they get more than they would have got through compensation

Jetta basically went for that pick and if we chased him we would basically have to give up the same pick he was taken with. I think he'll have a better year this year than he did last and if he had of kicked straight he could have had 25 goals to his name in his first year off of half forward as a small/mid forward pushing up to the wing in a team and on a ground that really doesn't suit his style of play. I also have us picked for a spot around 9-11 on the ladder this year. So our first round pick at the end of this year would be 14-17. Obviously if we finished last i wouldnt offer up pick 4 for him.

Can't compare him to a normal 1st year kid - he's 21 - so you'd expect better performance.

It's not so much his kicking for goal - but his kicking from the flank - in the games i watched he seemed to shank far too many. And i don't mean missing targets - i mean kicking mongrels off the boot.

It's been 12 months and the fullness of time will prove me right or wrong - but the decision to take Sheppard was by far and away correct IMO.

And I don't reckon Jetta will be much more than just an average footballer

TBH i really wouldnt know as i really dont like watching the swans play. I've really only seen a couple of his games this year and run over his stats. Most of my jetta assessment is off his wafl form last year. I would stress though that for a player like jetta a ground like the SCG and a playing style like sydney's really is the hardest possible environment for him to shine in.

Id go for either of them if they wanted to go home... not many players leave Sydney with development left in the tank though.

If we start to actually win some games in the next few years and our first rounder was in the highish teens youd seriously think about offering it up for either of them. Obviously would have to depend on the strength of the draft that year though.

Lets just hope crazy Vossy is still in charge then and Longmuire destroys that Sydney culture!

Jetta will not leave the Swans, With Goodesy as his mentor he is sticking around.
I thought the Hawks drafted well, a few mature age players ( Smith is a gem ) for a team who want premiership success in the next two years, adding Kyle Cheney and Cameron Bruce and Hale you have a very mature side hope it is worth it.

Going after mature players totally depends on our needs at the time and if we can get the right player via trade with the picks (or players) we can afford to let go of.

If we get Wilson in the PSD and then find ourselves in a situation where Darling and he get back to the rankings they had as 17 year olds, then we will be laughing.

While I think Darling can still play some KPF, Wilson most definitely cannot play KPB unless he seriously strengthens up and gets more athletic. I like Wilson as a replacement Bones, but we already have Jordan Jones and Brennan, not to mention all the mid/HBF's on our team...

Competition for spots and make the cream rise to the top. If they all turn out great then brilliant, we can then trade to fill needs.
