Your EOY Targets

Well, we're into the last two months of the year, and with no AFL and the Spring Carnival at least half gone, the traditional punting avenues are drying up.

How are you going so far this year?
What is your target by the end of the year?
How do you plan to get there?

My punting year began after a long sabbatical on 22nd May, when due to utter insanity I backed Port Adelaide to beat Melbourne in Darwin. Port rattled home from 6 goals down in the last to hit the front, and then promptly gave the lead back and lost by a point. I decided at that point that I was punting like a moron, trying to "buy" myself a starting bankroll with money I could ill afford to lose, and that if I was going to gamble on an ongoing basis I had to start respecting my bankroll and bet much, much lower percentages.

So from being -60 units on 22nd May, I've slowly worked my way up to +50 units in early September, by punting on the horses, cycling (cheers Sasquatch), F1 and turning over my winnings from footy tipping. I only ever bet from my allotted bankroll because I can't otherwise afford to be gambling. Making use of some bonuses, and getting right into the start of the NFL season, I'm now up to +250 units at this point which is a great launch pad for 2011.

I'm aiming to get to +500 units by the end of the year, which I think is pretty achievable. I've had a horror week in NFL this week but generally my returns have been good. The NBL has been a source of a few good wins so I'm going to look further into that, and F1 has a few more races to run yet. I'm a good horse racing analyst if I don't try to tip the card, and I avoid crazy racing patterns or track conditions. The main thing is for me to continually review the way I'm punting, and to keep from letting the frustration in when I have a bad week such as this one.

Your turn. :)

I had a very bad AFL and NRL season of betting, and was down over 200 of my units (I know units are different for everyone).

But with a couple of long term bets (Collingwood winning the flag, SF Giants winning the World Series) and Americain at 40's winning the Melbourne Cup today, I am up over 150 units at the moment.

My strategy from this moment till the end of the calendar year is more to stick to the sports I know more about (NFL, English Soccer, NBL) and less on the sports I know little about (NBA, Tennis, Golf, A-League).

Also, with the Breeders Cup day coming up next weekend, this represents another chance to raise those profits.

I'm also using the "place 30 1.20 bets to win 2K" system, but in a different form where my first bet is bigger, and I cash in full after 10 wins each time, and cash the initial outlay along the way.

Today was one of my better betting days ever (thanks largely to the Giants) but I am not going to waste those winnings, they will go to building a bigger bank over the next few months leading into next years AFL and NRL seasons.

Best of luck to all, no matter what method you are using, or what you are betting on.:thumbsu:

I'm a mug punter therefor never win innthe long term! If im up $600 I'll see it as a free bet and plonk something, i'm pretty fearless. Once as a 19 yr old I took my yearly savings (about $4500) to derby day and managed lose 4k of it by race 5 and with a omen trifecta ( you know the ones were you use your dob and mrs dob and mums and dads names) managed to rake in a 5k hit. I ended up blind drunk and done my arse eventually with my last bet at dapto lol, ended up driving home like an idiot and crashed my car, nice work mate.

Anyway 8 yrs later I still haven't learnt much but the mrs now controls the accounts so it's harder to operate. My old man is a very big punter and has been assholed by just about every corporate bookie, he bets with a syndicate of blokes in the know and I'll sometimes have a crack if I'm around him based on the tips and mail he gets.

Surprisingly, I made a bit of money today and over the balance of the horse racing season.

You won't see me posting many tips currently as I do not profess to be an expert in horse racing.

Overall to answer your queries:
1. Best year ever of punting
2. May have a few small goes for Oaks, but that's pretty much it. I am currently on the Democrats to keep control of the US Senate in the next day or so. Possibly some interest bets on the tennis. My strategy is to wait until next year and stick to my key sport being AFL.
3. Exceeded my yearly target by 180%. No real standouts. Just grinding profits week by week.

Edit:
I've also got a few remaining long-term AFL bets to come in.
1. Akermanis not to join the Gold Coast
2. Rutten/Van Berlo for Adelaide captaincy

I'm no real regular poster here in the punting board but I want to begin to make my presence felt!
This year I began to do sports mutli's mostly being football and soccer, which won me a bit of money. As the AFL season came to an end and the Spring Carnvial began to start I then got into the horses. At the beginning I was down a bit of money (maybe $500 or so [which is a lot for a university student!!]) but I then grinded my way back to break even at the end of the Melbourne Cup day thanks to a few trifecta's and the quaddie I jagged!
As for the end of the year, I hope to go to the Moonee Valley night races quite frequently and get my balance in the positive rather than the negative!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Thats my kinda guy :thumbsu:

, cycling (cheers Sasquatch),.

Nah, I don't plan on doing much sports betting over the next few months. I'll keep up with the NBL every week as I'm up and will continue to be up on that and then work my way back into the NBA and throw a couple cricket bets on.

At the moment I have a healthy bank roll despite me losing a lot on the horses - which is something I'll never touch again unless someone gives me a good tip. Taking some money out to splurge on, keeping some in, ready for a cycling assault next year.

At the moment I'm planning and thinking ahead to cycling. I'm undertaking research already for some races and riders. I have a lot of research already done and plenty more to go. Have it in word in a particular order and reference it so it's easy to find when I want to look at it next year.

Do I up the unit cost or keep it the same for another year? Stuff I'm working through to work out the best way to make a shitload of money. Looking at things this year, if I did things differently, I would have been up a hell of a lot more. I'll be keeping a spreadsheet of my bets.

Basically no goals for the end of the year. I'm up enough and I'll just go with the flow. My NBL record is very healthy and I'm very tempted just to stop it completely and wait for the cycling next year.

I'll work out goals in 2011 for 2011.

My target is to stay away from the ponies. Lose too much on these things so will be taking aim at Sports I know a bit about eg. NHL, NBA

Also going to start a spreadsheet of all my betting, I find if I keep track of the bets I don't start making "impulse" bets.

And will look at my system I use which at the moment is non-existent.... So if anyone has any suggestions let me know. At the moment I am keeping from just above even to a few units in front. Would like to improve that considerably.

Keeping a spreadsheet is one of the best things you can do I think, makes you accountable to yourself and allows easy tracking of where you are going right and wrong. I have one that keeps my total continually updated and then spits out a unit value based on a percentage of that total. So if the total is up bets naturally get bigger. Number of units placed is then based on the level of confidence in any given bet.

i've had a shockin year to be honest! generally i'm the same every year... i'll make money on cricket, a league, epl and nfl. i'll lose it in the autumn carnival. i'll do great in the nrl and afl. and sans one big spring carnival day, i'll lose it on the horses. problem this year was that nrl and afl werent anywhere near as lucrative usual, and the bad days this spring were worse than usual.

not a great year.

but then i wont always be mid 20s and single...

end of year goals are not monetary - just to not bet on any more friggen horses til february!

have only started to get serious with the betting and concentrate on getting somewhere with it, instead of the impulse like bets.

due to the brownlow, this year is clearly a huge winning year for me (22k profit from that) and also an impulse big bet Lenny to win the Norm, so that was one very big week!

have started a spreadsheet recently and enjoying it so far, getting used to entering the data and soon it should become second nature.

will mainly focus on nba, nfl and college football til the end of the season have found some people to follow with them and their record is quite good so hopefully i can continue with some success. Will also pay close attention to Royal Samplers and Cruisers posts on the NFL as they seem to be in the know.

will continue to bet on NBL as we are all seem to be having success with that.

will have smaller bets on the cricket, motorsport and tennis.

Probably broken even with the horses over the course of the year with a few big trifectas helping that, but will put a halt on them for now i think.

my main goal is to stick with my plan and not let a few bad swings affect me.

A few people have mentioned keeping spreadsheets, what data do you keep.

I assume:
Date, sport, actual bet, Wager, Odds, Win or Loss, Agency

not sure what the norm would be but i have done
Week to week so no actual dates just first week of November etc

Agency, Sport, Bet, Selection, Amount, Odds, Result, Win, Loss, Reasoning, Results

the last two probably a bit overboard but its working so far

hahaha classic tale of the punt! i think we go about it the same way!!!

went to derby on saturday and put 200 in my sportingbet account got the 50% bonus so had 300 to play with.......didnt back a winner all day and was out by the end of race 6...got home drunk put another $100 in the account and put it all on a $4.50 winner at doomben then another 100 on a 7.50 winner in the UK...yes the UK!!! then it continued with another 4.50 winner at the UK so it had it at around 1700! lost a few more and finished with about 1500 for the day! then got it upto about 1800 halfway through melb cup day and thats when the luck ended havent backed a winner since and the accounts at 1000!! decided to leave it at that and take it out!

Updated.

Ended up being just over 200% of yearly target.

...I'm now up to +250 units at this point which is a great launch pad for 2011.

I'm aiming to get to +500 units by the end of the year, which I think is pretty achievable.
I'll await the result of UFC 125; McKee vs. Volkmann tomorrow because the bet was placed back in 2010.

If McKee wins, I'll be +861 units for 2010.
If Volkmann wins, I'll be +754 units for 2010.

Either is a tremendous result for me, given I started midseason and down 60 units, and I haven't added to my bankroll at all since then. This year I intend to be more professional in my approach, only punting on events I've had time to thoroughly research. With a sizeable (for me) starting bankroll, I'm really hoping to make good gains as opposed to 2010 when I started with nothing. Much of it will probably depend on the sustainability of profitable NBL betting, because it's been by far my most lucrative sport last year.

AFL, NBL, NFL, F1, cycling and horse racing are the main sports I'll be looking at.

EDIT: Volkmann wins, which was the less profitable of the two :(. Still, +754 units is a great outcome.
