I'm at Commonwealth GC mate but try to play elsewhere when the opportunity presents. I'd perhaps play 15 games at CGC a year and another 30-40 elsewhere. Averages out to about once a week. Given I'm on the Golf Australia magazine Top 100 course rating panel I try to see as much as I can.

what did you like about the course?
I think it's an outstanding course from start to finish. The first 5 holes are absolute belters and it really retains the quality right though the layout. I think it's a challenging course but with super generous fairway widths which is ideal given the prevailing conditions. Fun and playable for all. It's also beutifully routed and presents the best vistas of any of the three courses (16 tee shot looked amazing with the ocean horizon and dark skies beyond yesterday).

I particularly love how the firm fairways and surrounds allow the ball to bounce and release onto onto the green surfaces. You really have to determine the best flight and right amount of spin in determining the best way to feed the ball into certain pin positions.

It's my favourite course on the Peninsula and think my 10 round National split would be 7 Gunnamatta - 2/3 Moonah - 0/1 Old.

The routing between holes must be the best of any course I've ever played. The walks are never much more than 20-30 meters and have such a perfect flow to them. Do any other courses come close in this regard seeing you would've played many more than I have?

Monthly medal was on Saturday and on the temp course (blue markers) at City Golf Club I shot 90/74. 6 over handicap. I wasn’t too upset for someone that has had only 3 games now in the last 7 weeks. I was playing 2 to 3 times per week. My putting was excellent (27 putts) for someone who doesn’t practice and just walked straight onto the tee. My tee and irons shots were very scratchy though along with my chipping.

This intimacy of design was such a hallmark of the great "Golden Age" courses of the 1930's. They really did not have heavy duty machinery to pump out courses over massive footprints and had to route their courses elegantly where you basically walked off one green and onto the next tee (or simply teed up righ next to the previous green).

Kingston Heath is perhaps the poster child in that regard of a course that does this well. It's on quite a small site (127 acres) but manages to feel quite big. And it's largely due to its clever routing where the tees and greens link up seamlessly so there's no wasted space.

Compare this to a course like Ellerston where it's like they went searching over 250-300 acres for 18 great holes. It's terrific but hardly walkable. Have a feeling Cathedral Lodge is similar.

I remember playing Cranbourne and Settlers Run over two days a couple of summers ago and the walk at the latter was around 3000m more! A death march if ever I saw one.

wow! well that's the benefit of a democracy, we all have a right to voice opinion. I do love the Gunna greens (similar but not to PKs). I agree its playable for everyone given the generous expanses. But not an easy course.

Its interesting your view about the vista. I still IMHO feel the view on 7 old, 8 old (green), 17 old are spectacular. 16 gunna is a spectacular view i must agree, and lets face it the best thing about replacing ocean with gunna was that we could actually play and see the ocean!!! contrast to the ocean course....

How about 10? Slightly came out of the drive, hammered 3 wood and still short!

from memory that was the ocean 10th? I cant picture it (but when standing on the tee i can obvs)

routing is very good. the ocean was very much meh, up and down up and down. Now moving this way and that way adds enjoyment and also challenges wind wise.

id say PK north routing is superb.

I agree with Kingston having played there a few times. It's a highly underrated aspect of golf course architecture in my opinion since it can easily enhance or detract from the overall experience.

Have added.

Anyone else wanted to be added to the first page, or alternatively could start a new thread. Lock it and see if we can get it stickied.

Have you ever played Royal Perth? I think the land is smaller than Kingston. It's quite amazing.

So I played the Volkswagen Scramble for the first time on Sunday - was a late call-up after my mate's old man pulled the pin. He and one of the others were our two single markers, there was me off 19, and one of the other guys' mums off about 50 so it bumped our team mark up to about 15.

We were four under off the stick through 15 holes but missed a few birdie chances, then dropped a shot. After the scoring was completed (we were the second last team into the clubhouse) it looked like we missed out on top three by a shot - top three go through to regional finals.

Recount was done and we actually finished second so away we go in March or April I think.

Really liked the format - Ambrose with everyone hitting a tee shot, but until you get to the green, the player who's shot you use does not get to take a shot from where they landed their previous ball. Every player in the group has to have 3 tee shots used by the team at some point. My mate told me that the night before, he and the other single-marker sat down and tried to work out where myself and the mum would be able to get our three used tee shots.

Turned out I hit 12 of 14 fairways and drove the ball literally like a professional. I've never hit the ball better, and wasted it on a team round hahaha

After hitting the ball pretty well last week I played 9 this arvo and couldn't have hit them much worse.

More practice required. Thinking i might sign up as a member at a little 9 hole course near me that seems relatively quiet so I can at least hit more balls mid-week in the afternoons/evenings.

Go for a membership you won't regret it. Great to have the flexibility to fit golf around your schedule.

Cancelled the round at the national, moved the round to peninsula south course. Lovely day, a nice breeze kept temperatures in check. Carried the bag which provided weight, resistance and importantly quick access from front to back of the green.

score in the low 30s was fair and just.

Was lovely today on the Gunna. Bit of breeze about keeping everyone honest. Didn't miss fairway today making it all the more pleasant. Not that it's a big achievement on that course.

haha yeah. if you miss a fairway on gunna you need to give up the game haha
How'd you go today? 30+?

As I learned Sunday there's a big difference between hitting the fairway at Gunnamatta and being in the right part of the fairway at Gunnamatta!
