I don't agree with Sam that often but he's bang on here. Every other state you can play golf, go fishing etc. It's only Victoria that's currently in a police state all thanks to Daniel Andrews.

It's a ******* disgrace what he's doing.

Go back a step, the problem with our country is too many regulators/authority bodies/governments/councils etc.

I mean sure it seems pretty strict, but I'm not sure I'd use those words.
He's not doing this for fun, he's had the balls to do what he thinks will save lives, and largely it's because people don't follow the advice/rules from the authorities.

We are told to stay home unless it's essential, Sam Newman takes his golf clubs to parliament steps to make a point, Like seriously? Why would someone flaunting the advice/rules publicly be a good way to argue to lessen restrictions. If anything his actions would encourage harsher rules because people don't listen....

not an totally invalid point. All thoughout the corona saga we've berated people who go to the beach, gathered in groups, surfed despite it being deemed non essential.

The way I see it...and I know that there is very little or even no chance of virus spread by playing golf...but. If they have asked us to not play we need to respect that decision. If we played, the next sport would say..but they are...and so on so on. Until there was a bit more chance of something happening which would be bad. We are really well placed and once again very fortunate to live in the lucky country.

There are a lot of people...health workers and supermarket workers risking a hell of a lot for us and doing a dam fine job. We all just need to pull our heads in and comply..in respect to these people.

We back off now and and we will be back to square one with a longer wait on our hands. There is not a lot of patience in our community and we need to have it. We are doing well and need to trust the ones making decisions on our behalf. It's not too much to ask...really.

Now I may not be right...and some will disagree on my thoughts...and that's ok. Just my thoughts.

Very well said. Agree 100%.

And if you want to play, demand to play in Vic, go and do so. Hit a public course, or get into some course. You've got the whole course to yourself!

As for Sam Newman the man is a rampant publicity seeking whore who should be ignored at all costs.
Hes an arrogant dinosaur and as usual he's missed the point. We've got people risking their welfare and the welfare of their families like health workers and everyone else putting themselves in then firing line and he's having a cry because he likes to golf and can't do that right now. I'm sure it must suck being asked to stay home in his mansion while others will lose their homes potentially.

It's not about "why can't we golf?" , we've been asked to help each other out by staying home unless it's essential. This advice is aiming to save lives and get the country back to normal as soon as possible. The reason rules exist is because self entitled privileged dickheads like Sam choose to ignore it and just do what they want because they have always been in a position to do so.

Sam's not doing this for the betterment of anyone else, he's doing it because he likes to play golf and poor Sam is sad he can't play his rich guy courses.

Issue is it’s tough to justify having large groups of people inside closed spaces like supermarkets/bunnings yet not allowing small numbers in completely open air on a golf course.

It’s nonsensical.
I think the point is that you are allowed to go shopping for very brief periods to get what you need and then return home and stay at home to stop the spread.

Likewise with exercise you are allowed to exercise outside in close proximity to your home for brief periods and then return home and stay home to stop the spread.

Are we suggesting that someone like peternorth be allowed to jump in the car, drive for an hour to his club the National and spend 4.5 hours there and then drive an hour home to get his exercise - all luxuries not available to the general population because he's a golfer and he's special?

He’s a member of the national. There are many who are affluent yes. And many that aren’t there (raises 🤚) [emoji6]

Or someone at cathedral which is miles away!

Am I special. Nah. Am I a golfer. Barely most times [emoji23]

Also groceries are an essential service. So allowances are made.

I don’t disagree with those who say the rules etc are confusing etc in some cases. On the face of it people aren’t social distancing in coles but we can’t play golf? I understand where people are coming from. We all do.

Just with everything going on, he's lacking perspective. I'd have enjoyed the story more if the cops fined him a thousand bucks.

I just want to be clear that my anger is not purely because we're not allowed to golf. It's the abuse of power by the Victorian government and I'm shocked that so many people are willing to just accept what Daniel Andrews is spewing.

Abuse of power, sure if they are getting something out of it and it stinks of injustice and corruption, but this isn't that.
What's the government getting out of this? They are doing this in an attempt to save lives and keep Victorian's safe. It's not as if everything is normal and they are banning golf because they have decided to be dictators that don't like the sport. Victoria is a sporting state, we will be again, but they are trying to put in place measures that will keep it's citizens safe.

From reports Dan himself is an avid golfer, what's he gaining from this for him to want to abuse his power to get an outcome?

I don't want to get into a debate over political parties and their policies because they're all the same in my opinion (in it for themselves). But since you asked what they're getting out of it... votes. You will find that the approval rating of Daniel Andrews and even Scott Morison will rise because really the majority of people care about is politicians looking like they're doing something in times of crisis. The same reason why scomo got roasted for being in Hawaii at the beginning of the bushfire crisis.

The whole point of the tough restrictions put in place was to make sure our health system didn't get overrun like we've seen in other parts of the world. Tough measures had to be pout in place initially to ensure that didn't happen here and thankfully through the work of the federal and state governments that happened. I think it's fair to say the forced quarantine of returning travellers has been a massive success in reducing the spread.

So successful in fact that we have just one new case confirmed in Victoria today. There are just 143 active cases of COVID19 in Victoria today, of those 36 are in hospital and only 13 of those requiring treatment in the ICU.

The spread of this has been so well contained now yet we're still looking at a minimum of another month of copping $1600 fines if we take a drive to clear our head, visit the grave of a loved one or take part in any other activity that can be done while still maintaining strict social distancing measures.

You’re allowed to drive somewhere to exercise.

It seems to be an over the top restriction.

Sam Newman going the wrong way about it though.

Dunno if this helps or hinders any sides case

Can I leave the house to do outdoor exercise on my own?
Yes, you can leave your home to exercise alone, provided it’s possible to maintain physical distancing of at least 1.5 metres from others at all times. This includes, walking, running, bike riding or other types of exercise, such as yoga in a park.

While it may be necessary to leave your immediate neighbourhood to undertake exercise, we’re asking Victorians – please use common sense and don’t travel any further than you have to.

Wonder if they are hesitant at the moment to back track on this ruling only because of the message it sends. If we are seen to be reducing restrictions I am sure there are many selfish campaigners out there that...given an inch will take a mile.

Reports of 11 people having a poker party, 4 or 5 getting together to play video games and other dinner parties doesn't give much confidence, that if this thing was spreading like in other parts of the planet, in containing or eradicating it. Our Australian...she"ll be right mate attitude works against us a bit.

I doubt too much thought was put into restrictions like this as there were way bigger issues at the time.

NSW has had a spike overnight...mainly because of the mistake of 1 person in elderly care. It doesn't take much for it to get out of control.

I think the view is not to undo a lot of the hard work everyone* has done.
I don't really think it's a vote grab, I think the longer it goes the more people Andrews would likely be pissing off. The longer it goes and the stricter he is, that could eventually cost him votes by people who take the view he's being too controlling.

We will be out and about again on the course soon enough I think/hope. I'd imagine after the next state of emergency concludes in May, that might be the timeframe to start reintroducing things.

Does a few more weeks without golf really matter here? We have real potentially to really knock this virus down in this period.
