St Andrews - first off in the morning. First too drives bang into the left and reloads. Total wipe. Front 9 some of the worst holes I've played but was an unreal challenge. Have some issues with my driver and so 4 iron was the go to for a while but the breeze crept up and just had to give the driver a whack. Back 9 was much better and had 26 point overall.

Highlights included the previous mentioned par 4 hole, 4 iron into breeze, headwind, left me with 300 still into the hole. Par 5 17th had the breeze behind me and left 120m into the flag. (had 6 from here 😂)

Old Course next up. Our fourth was late, but as I would find out, no one wants to play the old course and we delayed the tee time. It was Lucas Herbet and he gave himself +6 off the black tees 😂. I was paired with him in some sort of skins game which included GIR, birdie bonus, closest to pin and normal Stableford points.

The golf was great fun, only lost 1 ball, had 32 points and had 3 pars. Pretty stoked for a 18 handicapper. The beauty was didn't need the driver and my irons off the tee hit all but 1 fairway. It was what happens after that which is frustrating. Couldn't find a hole I didn't like, landed on the green for the signature hole. Herbet and my mate were all about much easier second or third time with local knowledge and where to come in from. Such a brutal course but was great fun.

Herbet was unbelievable though. Yardage everything, told us what he wanted to do with each shot executed it pretty well. Didn't know he misshit them until he told us. Highlight was watching him hit driver off the deck to about 2m short on the large par 5. Also has a 3 yard dispersion of his max club distance that he is happy with. Talked about the US open and how crazy it was, but surprisingly not a lot of golf chat. He did say his favourite course worldwide is the National Old Course, how about that ey.

Doubt I'll get to play ever again with a current top 100 ranked player. And it also makes me see how terrible I am haha but when I hit a good shot, one must savour it.
What a write up, sounds like an awesome time.

I just finished playing St. Andrews and Racv cape Schank (however you spell it). No +6 handicappers, but a few mates, golf, beers and good times. We are blessed with the peninsula.

Oh Mike Clayton the golf architect was there too and him and Herbet had a good old chat as he played the newly redesigned Royal Queensland the other week.

All in all a great day.

Clayts no fan of the old course.

Does National have a Pennant team? How do they go?
I'm 30 years old still can't crack 100 but one day I'd like to be good enough to play pennant somewhere :D

Will probably be the oldest fart there by the time that ever was a chance of eventuating.

Yeah Kim is a fair player.

Keith Valentine is the guy you're talking about. Decent player in his day. Was a line Aust Tour ball pro. I used to play with him a bit.

Al Presnell I thought held a one of the National records?

Members seem to be enjoying it. Would have to be the most played of the 3 at Schanck looking at time sheets.
Not surprising - it's a superb course albeit I've only played it once pre-lockdown. And even then we got called in after hitting into the par 3 16th due to storms.

Was a shame as 17 looked like a belter.

45 this arvo. Driving was terrible. Only hit 2 fairways and missed pretty bad. But everything else worked ok. Had a gettable eagle putt on the first, but pushed in 10 feet past and made par 🤪

Never got to play the original ocean. Big improvement from all reports though?
Very big improvements. Picture this. Greens that were slickest at the national, greens that were table tops (crowned). mix that with wind and you get almost impossibilities in stopping balls on the green. Low markers freakin so hard. For higher markers, not too bad.

The 18th was in the same possie as 18 now. But if you didnt get your drive over the ridge, ball rolls back and to the right into a bunker OR scrub. Second shot through the shoot onto a elongated back to front green, ok if youre not in the scrub. If you make it in reg good times. Otherwise take a bogey and walk off.

Now we have greens that are receptive and fair. pot bunkers in middle of the fairway gone. Wind remains.

Cancelled national round today, gonna play peninsula instead.
