My unpopular opinion is that nobody should use carts on any course unless they physically require one.

Taking a lot of people (money) of the game with that. Too much money would be lost.

I couldn't imagine how many members we would lose at devil bend given how hilly it is.

Golf is a perfect opportunity for some light exercise - regardless of age. I think carts are just a pain when sharing them too, IMO. Almost as slow as walking when you have to go from ball to ball for each player, taking out stacks of clubs to play a shot, and when you’re playing partner takes a year to hit their ball. And nothing shits me more than duffing a shot because the cart is too far away to run back and get the club you’re comfortable with. Wouldn’t happen if your bag is next to you.

The issue with slow rounds on publics is not the booking system or groups of 4 imo. It is simply the inexperienced golfers that are on course...partly with the amount of shots being played as everyone is playing stroke...but mostly it is etiquette.

The amount of times I am stuck behind someone that is totally clueless is staggering. Buggies left on the front of the green whilst putting when the path to the next hole is the back is a particular bugbear of mine.....then when they go to their bag the take out their scorecards...count their shots and mark it, check phones etc. before leaving the area whilst the next group waits to approach the green. Do it at the next tee or away from the green.

The worst is when you get behind a very poor group and they line up along the fairway and watch each others shots...whilst their ball is 10 metres away....then they go up take 10 practice swings...so on so on. Instead of going up to your own ball and start getting yourself ready to keep things moving. It is like they think there is a rule that you are not allowed to be closer to the hole than the furthest person playing. Yeah if it is dangerous keep your distance...but if they are on the other side of the fairway move up to your ball and get ready ffs.

One group like this buggers the course for the whole day.

Had this exact experience last weekend. With one bloke taking 2 or 3 breakfast balls off the tee every hole too. Almost laughed out loud at the tavern afterwards when I overhead him telling his mate he shot a 43.

Carts can be ineffective as we all know. If its affecting pace of play and annoying members and guests, they wont be happy. Thing with carts, and with pace of play is education. ie. both carts dont need to go to the one ball. take a number of clubs to your ball if you are in two or more minds. etc. But it also goes for walkers.

On the issue of slow play, yesterday I played with two guys. One was still new to the club probably in his 4/5th competition round while the other was having his second ever comp round. The second guy didn't have a handicap yet and was all over the park so we would spend a bit of time looking for balls from time to time.

Yet we were constantly held up buy a very experienced (still choppers) group of 3 in front of us. At one stage they even spent 3 minutes looking for a ball while we stood on the tee box watching. They deemed it lost and the guy came back to hit another two (put another one OOB lol) without calling us through.

Anyway the point is that being a high handicapper or inexperienced isn't an excuse for slow play.

And yes, I made it quite clear how frustrated i was to the group ahead of us when we got back into the clubhouse.
That last paragraph is really interesting. Should the club (pro/captain) be told of the slow play issue to tell the group/re-enforce the protocol? I like the direct approach mind you, but if the blokes are knobs, does another members opinion carry the same weight as officials from the club?

Absolutely the club advises the offenders. And get the Marshall out there to move things along.

Pklz did they keep up with the group in front of them?

Carts should only be available to those with a medical certificate. End of story.

They are nothing but a blight on the game.

Simplistic view imo. Should be getting more people to play golf, not less.

Can't agree on a blanket position. I've played some resort courses in Qld with 100m+ between tees. My position is more that if there's carts on the course, then everyone has them. But I agree that if it's generally a no cart course they should only be for those that need them.

Why such hate for Carts?

I often play in a cart because the guys i play with wont walk. Carts make for a heaps faster round.
They can be faster if you hit straight. But 2 carts with 4 average golfers can look like a scene from Benny Hill as a lot of courses aren't set up for cart use ( no paths). There's also issues if you are quick in carts and no one else has them ,you're forever catching up to people. They can easily mess up the flow of around.
From an ideology stand point, golf is a sport and so courses should be walked if you healthy enough ( in the opinion of a doctor, not the individual) to do so. An Ian Healy quote when Arjuna Ranatunga came out to bat comes to mind. :)

Being good or bad doesn’t make that much of a difference.

I’m talking guys, or girls, who don’t understand their level and combine it with being completely oblivious to their surroundings.

i understand your POV. There will never be a blanket position. Resort courses are built for carts. Played Bonville and its a carting course (well first time played).

Ocean Dunes and cape wickham we carted as we played multiple rounds in the day. the walk between holes was not short. Could walk it definitely, but only 18.

Would guess that clubs make enough money on carts to keep green fees lower or even keep some of them in business.
Not a fan of them in general but can see why they are necessary.

Not sure about that. if a club "relies" on hiring out carts then it's in serious trouble and questions about it's running surface.

At National there are cart restrictions. in my time there there carts are prohibited on one course. Especially in winter to care for the fairways etc.

Yep and can be slower if the players are hitting left and right, and those in the cart arent say dropping one off at his/her ball, then moving onto his/her own.

sh*t golfers with poor etiquette cause slow rounds, not carts.

Both can.a combination!

Although in terms of ettiquette, some believe teeing off in order (score from previous hole), and then everyone walking to the first players ball/shot, instead of walking/continuing ahead to their ball. Or waiting for the final player to putt out before the whole group leaves the green to to the next tee.
Or fill out the hole score on the green.
Or leave their bags in the wrong place (i.e not at the back of the green or side where the next hole is)

I’m a big proponent of ready golf when it comes to teeing off.

The rest of what you’ve raised are very valid points.

absolutely mate!

i recently played with someone whom was just starting out. young lad, uni. during the round he was pleasant and eager to learn. I explained things like where to leave your buggy, focussing on things other than distance and basic etiquette. the E word came up when others spoke when i was putting which im ok with as i explained i can always pull back and wait. but he said he'd always shut up out of courtesy. this is good

Other things like not being ready to putt when it’s your turn, not knowing how far you can hit off the tee, taking fifteen practice swings...the list goes on and on.
