i was a chronic sleepwalker in my youth. wake to find myself anywhere except bed...in bathtub, downstairs, etc. the only thing id remember is waking up and parents would be there shaking me or calling my name. often id be crying.

scariest moment was on school camp. bivvies were used (ie no doors). waking to find myself sitting on top of sleeping bag, friends shining torches at me, group leader/teacher holding me and encouraging me to get back into the bag. did so.

in the morning i asked wtf happened. friends pointed to a fallen tree some 20m away and noted that they found me trying to climb over it in pitch darkness. barefoot. they knew this because i was apparently screaming and counting sporadically aloud.

how that is related to sleep paralysis, ghosts, paranomal, lupus or anything else is a mystery.

I also went through the sleep walking phase, not as intense as yours sounded though, woke up im my parents room, had walked in there turned the light on and i woke them and me up, also jumped out of bed swearing and yelling a few times but briefly. It seems something that is pretty common with early teens, maybe hormonal related?

Yeah this sleepwalking thing is a real strange one. We know it's not aliens, or ghosts, but we do some weird shit when we're in the grips of it.

I too went through a bout of it for several years, that really only started to end when I moved away from my childhood home to go to uni. For me, it started when I was about 14, and sometimes a couple of times a week I'd find myself in the 19 year old girl next door's bedroom trying to climb into her bed. Complete mystery.

i sometimes think its scarier for those around you. they think you must be possessed or something.

my sister suffered from the same affliction.

hormones? perhaps, it would make some sense.

yeah i often talk to my mates about it and they often have similar experiences or people they know have and the common theme is that they are 13-15 years old. There are cases where some sleeping medication has caused really bad sleep walking.

So to set the scene for this story picture a small wooden house out in the country surrounded by nothing but a few trees and a lot of red dust. In that house lived a 4ft 8 elderly lady.

One clear still moonlit evening as the woman was about to get ready for bed she hears a clear loud knock on her front door. Being late in the evening she wonders who it is. She opens the door and nobody is there. Despite being late she assumes it is kids playing a prank so she walks around her block and finds nobody hiding.

She goes back inside shuts the door, walks about 5 steps and again a clear loud knock at the door is heard. She dashes back to the door opens it and nobody is there. Once again she quickly checks around her house (despite it being very open and few places for someone to hide) and finds nothing.

Still thinking it's someone playing a prank she decides to wait by the door.

A minute later and the third clear loud knock happens and she sees the door rattle from the knock. She quickly opens the door and once again there is nothing but the moonight lighting the open fields surrounding the house.

Naturally this seems strange to her and it concerned her somewhat given the tales she'd grown up with. However she was tough as nails and not one to frighten easily so she waits a few more minutes and when no further knocks occur she retires to bed.

Fast forward to the morning and she is awoken by what sounds like a car roaring up to the front of her house and the sounds of shouting and screaming.

She rushes to the front door to see what the commotion is and is met by a young man around 16 years of age screaming to the point of being incoherant. He grabs her and drags her to the back of the ute he's driven in. In the back of the ute is a young boy of around 14 years of age laying in the utes tray with his guts blown wide open.

She tries all she can to save the young man but sadly he dies.

Apparently the young lad while pulling the shot gun out of the ute grabbed it by the barrel end and it discharged right into his stomach.

The woman in question was my Great Grandmother and the boy in the back of the ute my Uncle.

My Grandmother recalled that arriving at the scene my GG said to her I knew something bad was going to happen but there was nothing I could do.

In the part of Ireland where this family came from traditional tales said that 3 knocks at a door signified impeding doom for that family.

As my GG was a no nonsense kind of woman I've no doubt she heard the 3 knocks that night. What caused them or what they meant I know not. However they do seem to match those traditional tales of the Banshee or Faeries back in Ireland.

The second tale is one of a UFO.

My mother was around 13 and her daily job was to milk the cows at around 5:30 every morning.

The milking shed a small tin shed looked out onto a small lake.

One morning just as she was starting to milk the cows she looked up and noticed a bright light coming in from her right towards the direction of the lake. It must have been traveling at high speeds as it went from being a long way off and only a small white dot to getting bigger and bigger with each passing moment.

Mesmerised by the light she continued to track the light until it was clear the light was coming straight towards the lake.

At that stage she started to get frightened as the light came to a stop over the lake. Appearing to be about the size of a car from where she was and making no sound it simply hovered above the lake.

That was enough for her and she hit the bolt running the 1km or more back to her house not looking back.

Arriving back home she was in a bit of a state and my Grandmother couldnt make much sense of what she was saying. Telling her it was nothing and she was probably making it up.

Later on in the morning over the radio multiple sighting of an unidentified light making its way across the district were being reported. Confirming what my Mother had seen.

My Grandmother would later say that she should have believed my Mother at the time because "the child didn't have much of an imagination so she couldn't make that kind of tale up".

The third tale is one of a possible Ghost.

Late one night my Grandparents were driving along a wide and open stretch of road. A typical Mallee road, lots of open red dust fields and no houses as far as the eye could see.

It was a still bright night with the moon illuminating the area for as far as the eye could see.

They had passed through Beulah and were heading onto Hopetoun. Somewhere between these two towns there was a paddock that had a massive old dead redgum sitting 50-100 metres or so back from the road in the middle of it.

A few hundred metres up the road sitting in the next farm paddock over and near the road itself was an old abandoned hotel.

As they were approaching the paddock with the big redgum in it my grandmother looked towards it and from out behind it stepped a woman all in white. She thought that strange and quickly pointed it out to my Grandfather.

From their description given the distance from the road to the tree they described the woman as being pale, young and in a wedding like dress. Given where it was and how far it was to the nearest farm it seemed a bit strange to them. That wasn't however what gave my Grandmother the heebie geebies. It was ther fact that despite it being a very still hot night the womans dress appeared to be moving in a way that suggested there was a wind blowing.

All of this happened within a 5 second time frame from when the woman was first spotted. My Grandmother said something to my Grandfather, looked back towards the tree and the woman was gone.

Being into local history she did a bit of research and found a report of a young woman who had passed away in mysterious circumstances at the hotel. She'd just been married...

For all you people with the 'just falling asleep' experiences, there is a well-known condition called sleep paralysis. Back in the olden days they used to call it Old Hag, because of the belief that a witch was trying to take the sleeper. We now know that it's to do with REM and hypnogogic states - the symptoms can vary greatly but you usually wake up, sometimes paralised and in a deep state of terror. You might feel like someone is on top of you or detect a presence in your room. Some people are awake during the experience, others only recall a distant memory of it happening but relive the feelings of fear.

Here is the base condition, or what used to be called 'Old Hag'. Please note that there are variations of this condition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

That wikipedia article is interesting. All those different cultures with shared experience of the human condition which were known well before globalisation or mass exploration.

Highlights our common roots and for me, shows just how much is passed down genetically from generation to generation. Experiences and behaviours as well as physical characteristics. The commonality of dream subjects across all cultures underlines this too.

We have recently begun to understand gene switches which could have happened a couple of generations ago.

Intersting that if theas come from a female ancestor, the experience or behaviour must come from before puberty, when a womans eggs are all formed and stored for slow release through her fertile life. With a man the sperm are created just before they are used so more of his life experience can be passed down. In theory any heathh related gene switching caused by occupational exposure to a health hazard can affect the fathers contribution more. - the propensity of some families to produce ony girls

The sleep paralysis and sleep waling are things we accept but dont understand, but may one day - the whole science thing.

Figures that things we dont currently accept - in a scientific way - may well be accepted and understood one day

Itd be nice to be still alive while a few of these are understood, sprituality, religion ans science at one on an issue In my lifetime.

I thing genetics is key to a lot of the issues, as genetics is a huge priority in science im quite. 'Optimistic'

I wonder how much serious study of time travel is happening ?

I once removed my wedding ring and put it into a drawer for a few days (don't ask)

When I took it from the drawer I found it squashed almost flat

I took it to a jeweller who was able to get it back into shape and he asked me how I was able to squash it like that, because it was a perfectly regular oval shape, and putting it in a vice would have led to damage on the surface of the gold

Possible poltergeist?

I have a few ghost stories that I tend not to tell people. I will tell you of what I will consider a premonition though. On September 11, 2001 I was asleep at midday (was wagging school) and had a dream. The dream was of bullets being fired into New York buildings. My dream would follow these long silver bullets on their journey toward the buildings. The buildings weren't specifically the Trade Centre but my dream was very specific telling me that they were NY buildings. As the dream would follow the bullets in their path there would be a focus on how long and tubular the bullets were. Specifically it would focus on how the silver bullets looked just like the shaft of airliner. I woke up and thought to myself who would want to shoot NY building with planes. I didn't think of it again till a few hours into the coverage of the attack.

Whilst technically not my experience this happened at our local pub only a couple of days ago

The story goes there is a young boy who still 'lives' upstairs of the pub after been ran over many moons ago. A lot of people who have been up there have had experiences but this is the met recent and I think the first one caught on camera.

The bloke who is living up there also told me of one that happened a few weeks ago where he was walking up the stairs and had what he thought was his youngest son next to him whilst walking up. When he got to the lounge room his son was watching TV and what ever was beside him was gone.

There have being a heap of others from this place as well as they believe upstairs(young boy), the gaming room (old lady) and downstairs (man) all living there in the one pub. It's very interesting to sit and listen to the stories from the people that work there.

Checking in some strange movements.

It might have made it to the east coast news, but yesterday a 17-year old was killed spearfishing near Albany in WA. It was reported at about lunchtime and his name came out a little later. I grew up in the town and my sister was in his year group – they were at leavers together just a few weeks ago and were good friends. Obviously, their year group is pretty shattered.

It was a beautiful, warm, still evening in Perth. At about 8pm, me and my parents went inside and watched some telly and heard a noise – like the top of a paint tin spilling onto concrete. My dad and I thought it was that, but my mum was adamant it was up stairs. We had a quick check and couldn't see anything and gave it no further thought.

This morning, my dad found the top of a tight lid metres from a bench on my sister's floor (she's currently away, down south). She had an ornament that's never fallen down in the wind, hanging down and detached.

My dad, like the rest of my family, are not religious. They aren't cooks. They don't profess to see anything and have a lot of hesitation surrounding the paranormal – occam's razor and rationality usually comes to the fore.

I previously wrote about my parents seeing a dead sibling around on the day he died, one glimpse, and they rarely cop up to it.

Does anyone believe in people lingering around after they go? Seeing people or at least attempting to? Saying a goodbye for themselves and their friends or family? Or is this just attaching hopeful meaning to something benign but not yet explained? I'm very keen to hear some opinions. I think most on this forum would realise I'm a pretty big cynic, so I hope this doesn't come across as kooky.

That's the shit that really gets me, I have that sort of thing about sporting matches and results, stuff like that, but that shit is next level x100

Until the funeral, they do linger. Normally at their abode, but not exclusively. Mainly around someone they had a real connection with. I know someone from along line of ghost whisperers in Scotland, they have proven this phenomen. Most cultures, but Christians recognize this occurrence.

As in how proven?

Scientifically proven?
