That's very true.
The difference with Varcoe is that the specific reason he is in the team are these non-statistic contributions he makes. The club likes him in the role and there's no one else banging down the door showing that they can do a better job at it. As I've said many times before, Byrnes doesn't play the same role. Byrnes is a flanker-midfielder who, in a good game, should be getting 20 possessions and kicking 1-2 goals. Because he's failed to do that, he's back in the VFL. As soon as Chappy came back, Byrnes had to make way.
I'm agreeing with you a lot CE, totally agree with your sentiments on Byrnes, he is in Chappy's spot not Varcoe's. When he was available Byrnes had to go as Chappy is better at it.
Varcoe could be replaced by Gamble IMO. I think Gamble has similar speed, although not as quick, however I think Gamble is really pressing for a shot at the moment.
