I figure any game we can get into this boy is a good game, but especially where we win. He's OBVIOUSLY got talent - that is becoming more and more evident. The problem is he's got ghosts in his closet. Those will be eradicated every time he can look at the scoreboard and say "My player didn't kick four, and we ended up having a higher score than they did - we won, and I did my bit."

I have no doubt that SOS will be turning this kid into a MACHINE. He'll be great for us over the next 10 years.

Dunno about that PS but he'll be handy I'm sure. Where was he taken in the draft people?
Pick 41 in the 2003 National, so mid third round. Was tipped to go pick 70 by Burgatron.

But then Sam Fisher was pick 55 that year

I was not impressed with Dawson on Friday night. In Round one, It did not appear that Barry Hall was switched on at all. Was the performance really that good? Hall did not get any supply at all really for two quarters. Only time will tell if Dawson can be a mainstay in the St.kilda backline.

While Zac was not as good as last week, his game was not by any means a bad game either.
Whilst he wasn't outrageously bad, I think he was definitely our worst in a fairly good team effort.

Perservering Saint I'd love to share your optomism, but to be honest I think he'll be delisted within 3 years. Here's hoping you're right.

I remember sam fish coming in 2004 when we got the injuries in the backline and had 6 kicked on him by richo and lloyd in a row, and by afew others as well.
Look what he has developed into now. Max took awhile to become as good as he is as well.
We need to expect he will get flogged at some stage this year, as we have seen happen to max, fish (rarely)etc.
He is being schooled by sos so if he doesn't get it we should play him as the third tall because he was apparently a forward. The magical third tall we are lokking for may already be here.

Someone wanna tell Dwayne Russell Zac Dawson isn't mentally ******ed.
Everytime Dawson marked it or handballed it today Russell was soooo patronising.
He was just about shell shocked everytime Dawson got his hands on the ball!
"Wow...Dawson", "Oh my! Things are going Dawsons way today"..blah blah blah Russells a massive tool!

Congratulations for his very first AFL goal - may have been a wobbly kick, but nobody will ever take that stat away from him !

Good on ya Zac !

Sending him forward at that stage of the game showed that Lyon's does have a sense of humour.

Just want to see Zac get on the corridor side of his opponents when going for the punch - always seems to favour his right side which weakens his attack on the defensive punch. Good pick up though - he and Ray have added great depth to our backline.

That kick was an absolute stinker.....maybe he is the next Sticks Kernahan:eek:

I think Dwayne Russell is still living on memories of Round 2, 2006.

Dawson has said (in his post-game interview against Sydney) that he's over it and is a different person and player now, and has shown it through his play so far this year. Regardless of that, that bad game early in his career never showed that he couldn't find the ball. All it showed was that at that stage, he wasn't strong enough or skilled enough to play a key defensive role on one of the most powerful forwards in the league (Anthony Rocca).

i really feel sorry for him many other youngsters have had bags kicked on them and very little has been said about it ryder had 8 kicked on him and i remeber a commentator mentioning it and it really makes me feel for him him
i think he will have that stain on career no matter what he does

ryder has had bags of 7, 8, 8, 9 and 9 kicked on him (the nines vs Hawthorn). the difference is, hawthorns success in the 70s and 80's has meant anything negative is blown out of proportion, you know, kick a person while they are down. If anyone remembers back then (ive only seen the papers and that, age an issue:P) but hawthorn were the "big bad nasties" and that does get passed down the line.

IT helps dawson having good players around him. Lets not forget, he was playing FB when hawthorn had alld eveloping players, and no help. He was never given a chance when we were succeeding, and was stuck at box hill who only had developing players (plus digby morell)

Im glad it has worked for him, hes is a great bloke, spoke with him almost weekly at box hill.

Personally, people who continue to deride him on one outdated game can keep doing it. With the way he's playing now, it's saying a helluva lot more about THEM than it is about Zac. Besides, he'll learn real quick the value of being thorougly disregarded by almost everybody - he's playing with Max Hudgeton, who has lived his entire career with most people underestimating him. I think Max actually finds that funny, and to some extent, a useful little weapon (anonimity has its perks...). Zac will hopefully come to feel the same. If he ends up with less than 3 goals per game kicked on him by the end of the year, then the joke is on everybody else.

Not going to go through ten pages of posts, but in the first three rounds the biggest criticism of Zac from me is that he seems to be crap at judging the flight of the ball. He often runs around to the front (no body contact), gets right under the ball, jumps fully outstretched and it's too high for him. Has anybody else noticed this?

Don't think Zac will worry too much! Someone told me the following used to be Dwayne Russell's wikipedia page (until he found out)!

Dwayne Russell (born March 4, 1965) is a very ordinary former Australian rules footballer and currently an even more ordinary commentator of the sport. He played for the Port Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL, before crossing over to VFL club Geelong in 1987. He played 50 games for 51 goals until he was removed from the club in 1991 for trying to pass himself off as Gary Ablett’s younger, better looking, but less talented brother at Geelong Nightclubs.

Following his retirement he was meant to be the captain-coach of Colac-Coragulac for 1992. However, he appeared at only two training sessions, collecting the $3,000 dollars to undertake the role. On the eve of his first match, he quit his position when he discovered that the Club had not installed a solarium in the team rooms, as per his persistent requests. The job later went to Michael Roberts, whom pundits had always considered to have a far greater tactical nous and grasp of the game (and his balls) than Russell.

Sports journalism

Following rave reviews by his parents, The Age newspaper decided to give him a chance at becoming a full-time sports journalist in 1997. Covering the major sporting events of Melbourne, Russell, became the number four sports writer at the number three sports paper in Melbourne. Following this "success" he was moved full-time to the papers coverage of the AFL in 1999.

Wet t-shirt commentary at the Geelong Hotel

In the late 1990’s Dwayne honed his commentary and presentation skills while hosting wet t-shirt contests at the Geelong Hotel. Dwayne’s ability to maintain composure in the wet conditions of the Geelong Hotel far surpassed his wet weather performances as a footballer - where he was known as a dry weather-only player who rarely ventured far from the forward pocket.

Football commentary

By 2001 his writing on AFL had become so well-known that, beginning in 2000 Channel 9 gambled on him for the main callers role for Sunday Afternoon matches - they are only now paying back the advertisers money.

His other main occupation is as co-host of 3AW’s top-rating drive-time sports show, “Sports Today” with Gerard Healy, of which Russell talks a lot of hot air and is outperformed on a daily basis by the VFL-AFL Hall of Fame and 1988 Brownlow Medalist.

Against all odds Russell was boned out of Channel nine. He then bounced back like one of his many cheques when he received a contract with Fox Sports to call two weekly AFL matches for the Pay-TV provider for the 2007 season.

He was reported to be over the moon with this news, having been quoted as saying: “I can finally buy that solarium now.”

Outstanding find Squizz.

Absolute flog of a player. Ran around like he had a broom stuck up his posterior.
