Opinion The evolution of your 22 as the offseason progresses 2013/14 edition!

With the pre-season done, here's my Round 1 side. It's not necessarily the 'best 22', but it's the side I'd pick on form and fitness.

B: T. Jonas, J. Trengove/A. Carlile (whoever's considered more match ready), C. O'Shea
HB: J. Pittard, J. Hombsch, M. Broadbent
C: K. Cornes, O. Wines, H. Hartlett
HF: C. Wingard, J. Westhoff, R. Gray
F: A. Monfries, J. Schulz, J. Butcher
R: M. Lobbe, T. Boak, B. Ebert
Int: J. Polec, J. Impey, D. Cassisi
Sub: M. White

Emg: P. Stewart (in if Schulz doesn't play), A. Young (in if Gray doesn't play), A. Moore

I don't think Hinkley will leave Moore out, but he really hasn't done anything to demand a spot at any point in our pre-season games IMO. I know Matt White has only shown glimpses, but Moore has barely even shown that, and I'm generally in favour of giving the new blood a chance to shine earlier in the season. Impey and Cassisi also earned their spots with very strong showings against St Kilda, and Polec is obviously a lock after his pre-season. Somebody has to miss out.

IIRC Moore was a standout in midfield in the first NAB game.

Also Gray will almost definitely play, just rested this week.

Ok, 3rd and final best 22 of the off-season heading into Round 1

B Jasper Pittard ~ Alipate Carlile ~ Thomas Jonas
HB Cameron O'Shea ~ Jackson Trengove ~ Matthew Broadbent
C Brad Ebert ~ Travis Boak ~ Kane Cornes
HF Robbie Gray ~ Justin Westhoff ~ Angus Monfries
F Chad Wingard ~ Jay Schulz ~ John Butcher
R Matthew Lobbe ~ Hamish Hartlett ~ Oliver Wines

Int Jared Polec ~ Matthew White ~ Domenic Cassisi
Sub Andrew Moore

Emg Jarman Impey ~ Aaron Young ~ Jack Hombsch

I'm taking Hinkley's word that Carlile, Trengove Schulz & Gray are ready to go. Cassisi earns promotion into the team on the back of a strong pre-season. Impey promoted to the emergency list although I reckon he's a good chance for a round 1 debut. White has shown improvement throughout the pre-season and should be given an opportunity against Carlton's mosquito fleet. Paul Stewart drops out due to injury, I reckon that calf will keep him out for a few weeks. Moore is the unlucky sub first up.

Port Adelaide POWER Round 1 vs Carlton
F: Monfries - Schulz - J.Butcher
HF: R.Gray - Westhoff - Wingard
C: Cornes - Boak (C) - Polec
HB: Broadbent - Trengove - Ebert (VC)
B: Jonas - Carlile - Impey
R: Lobbe - Wines - Hartlett
INT: Colquhoun - O'Shea - Moore
SUB: Pittard

Port Adelaide MAGPIES Trial vs Central
F: Neade - Shaw - Hitchcock
HF: Amon - Harvey - Johansen
C: Newton - A.Young - S.Gray
HB: Logan - Aseri Raikiwasa - Clurey
B: Stevenson - Hombsch - Heath
R: Renouf - Cassisi - Summerton (C)
INT: Biemans - Mitchell - Slattery (VC)
DEPTH: Haren - Ah Chee - Russell - Byrne-Jones - D.Butcher - Sawford - Venter - R.Young - Sharrad (4 more SANFL players to be picked)
Unsigned: Bruggermann, Hawkins, Aisea Raikiwasa

Injured: Power: Flynn (Personal Leave)
Redden (Knee: Due Back Round 5 vs West Coast)
Stewart (Calf: Due Back Round 2 vs Adelaide)
White (Knee: Due Back Round 2 vs Adelaide)
Magpies: NONE

Nice half forward line! Is that injury summary correct?

Heard part of Hinkley's interview on 5aa straight after the trial match. He talked up Impey, especially the defensive part of him game. Made mention of the contests he won against the St Kilda's talls in the forward line. Got the feeling he's a lock-in for round one.

Stewart and White are both in doubt for round 1 apparently. We will know how they are on monday when the injury update comes out.

If White drops out due to injury, that will all but guarantee Impey a round 1 debut IMO.

Best 22

Port Adelaide (AFL):
B:
Tom Jonas ~ Alipate Carlile ~ Matthew Broadbent
HB: Cameron O'Shea ~ Jackson Trengove ~ Jasper Pittard
C: Chad Wingard ~ Oliver Wines ~ Jared Polec
HF: Justin Westhoff ~ Jay Schulz ~ Hamish Hartlett
F: Robbie Gray ~ John Butcher ~ Angus Monfries
R: Matthew Lobbe ~ Travis Boak ~ Brad Ebert
IC: Kane Cornes ~ Matt White ~ Dom Cassisi
Sub: Jarman Impey

Cassisi in over Moore on pre season form. Impey gets in as sub over Newton who i had there before.

as for round 1
one of Carlile/Trengove will probably not start, so Clurey or Hombsch in. actually leaning towards Clurey as i am still not sold on Hombsch.
if White is out, Impey on the ground with Moore as sub.

tempted to start Impey on Garlett, but cannot find another sub worthy player.

B: Hombsch, Carlile, Jonas
HB: Broadbent, Trengove, Impey
C: Cornes, Boak, Polec
HF: Wingard, Schulz, Westhoff
F: Monfries, Butcher, R.Gray
R: Lobbe, Ebert, Wines
I: Hartlett, Cassisi, Pittard
S: Young
E: Moore, White, O'Shea

From my post-draft team that would be
In: Impey, Butcher, Cassisi, Pittard, Polec
Out: Moore, O'Shea, Redden, Neade, White

Surprised to be leaving out O'Shea but he's been ordinary in all four games and just looks out of form, I'd rather have Impey in defence and Pittard on the wing. Gets a reprieve if Bob or Jacko aren't ready.
I had Cassisi and Moore competing for one spot today, Dom clearly won that.
30 touches in 3 games just isn't good enough from White.
Youngy's lucky Alf got hurt, and Lobbe's lucky we don't have anyone else who can get through 2 hours.

Is this your rd.1 team ? If so Carlile,Trengove & Shultz will not be match fit or over their injuries. O'Shea emergency ? He's in our best 22. You'll find that Lobbe will pick up from where he left too as with most other players who have rarely left first gear.

You realise this is an opinion-based topic, yes? From what I've heard/read Carlile, Trengove and Schulz will all be fine for Round 1, are you privy to more informed knowledge?

I've been visiting the boards for a while and decided to sign up and join in. I was at the trial game and I think Clurey and Hombsch looked good enough to play round 1, which will be handy if Trengove and/or Carlisle aren't fit and It's a close call for the 22nd spot but I think Colquhoun edges out White at the moment. Impey and Polec definitely earned their spots as starters in the trial game and NAB games in my opinion.

B:
O'shea Carlisle Jonas

HB: Pittard Trengove Broadbent

C: Ebert Boak Polec

HF: Wingard Westhoff Hartlett

F: Gray Schulz Monfries

Opinion based ? I seems you've picked your rd.1 team. I'm just stating the obvious that Trengove & Carlile have not played 1 minute of trial matches between them. Is why I'm saying they won't be match fit.

The afl website have put up what they think is our best 22. Agree with most of it but Matthew Broadbent as sub? Harry Thring has said this before, I usually think of him as pretty much on the money but I have to disagree with him here. Paul Stewart is there but remember this is best, not first round and this would have been written before yesterday anyway. Butch did look good yesterday but he has promised quite a few times and failed to deliver.

Butch gets until Redden is back fit. So whats that round 5-7sh? I say back him in even if he starts the season slowly. If he still hasn't stepped up to it by the time Redden is ready to go then drop him but gotta give him a solid run at it.

I am getting a little worried about M.White, rapports have not been overwhelming, here's hoping he picks up next week

Also any news on samurai, other than he lost the pony tail

My comment about this being an opinion based topic was referring to Russian's opinion on O'Shea.

The only worry I have over Matt White is the potential of him being gifted games regardless of form due to Ken all but promising him games.

Ken would have promised him games if he did what is required of him - because there is definitely a place for him in our team.

But if you're asking me right now who I'd rather - Impey or White - I'd be choosing Jarman every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

An appropriate idiom given that we play on Sunday. :)
