Weren't we going to see player's names on the back of their guernseys???

What if Fox footy or Seven have a virtualized name floating over the players heads? That way we can work out the player from all angles. It would really kick the coverage into the 21st century.

Pointless. **** the back sponsor off, drop the number down and make the name bigger.

Or in reality, keep it as it was.

Keep it as it was. This whole thing is so "AFL". So many issues for them to be addressing as priorities and they waste their time on garbage like this. It's just an attempt to create the illusion they are doing things, so idiots can jump up and down clapping their hands saying, "Oh goody, I already know the players' names, but having their names on the back of their jumper makes the game so much better". AFL just gets more ridiculous each day.

I think it would be funnier, and no less pointless, if they printed the player's salary instead, so that when they miss a goal from 20 metres out, straight in front, the $800,000 is beaming proudly on the jumper to remind people how grossly overpaid some of these players really are.

This - I was in the camp of "Happy to try it and see how it goes".

If the point is to help with player identification, then it's not that successful on the TV. Unlike the NFL, we have a much faster moving game with fewer stoppage times where players are standing still, meaning theres less chance to actually see the names close enough to read.

If the names were bigger, it might be more useful. Ill also be going to a game live on Sunday - I'm interested to know if its any better live (might depend where we sit).
The other issue compared with the NFL is our players were tight guernseys over their comparatively thin backs. There's a lot more room to put a name on a guy who's 6'6 and 350lbs.

I've been pretty positive about this whole development, but...nah...

Casual scorecheck eye on the game in between PS3 stints last night, and didn't even notice the names due to their insignificant stature on the jumper...got on the ipad just then after realising this was "round 5", and wasn't able to make out a single name...

ARNOT from the Tigers didnt have his name on his jumper.
The names were too small and the lettering was too close together , another PR gone wrong for the AFL.
This admin of the AFL has a lot to learn

Great? Why on earth would anyone call it great?

it's a great idea that's why, Adelaide Hawk

Yep, make the names bigger ... how?

before you print it out, make the font bigger on the computer program.

And make the numbers smaller so we can't read them either. Yeah ... "great" idea.

nobody said make them size 6. just one size smaller, and the name one size bigger.

LOL at everyone saying the names look "stupid".

Someone's surname, which they've had since birth, becomes stupid once it's on the back of their sporting uniform?

I mean, can you even begin to explain your reasoning?

You're all fine with sponsors' logos though, I take it? Nothing wrong with rank commercialism, nah, that's fine, use players' backs as a mobile billboard to flog meatpies or cladding or car insurance, but heaven help us if guernseys start bearing the name of the person they're on. OMG, how crass! The player's name!

Yes matey...perfectly happy for our clubs to have sponsors names because it benefits our clubs. In many/most cases our clubs wouldnt even exist without them..i.e. there's a reason for it.
Player names are simply an ancillary and useless add on...they do nothing, contribute nothing and are simply a cynical marketing exercise aimed squarely at the tv and internet sports expert as well as the tweenies.

I would much rather the name QBE be twice the size than "Franklin" written on it where noone can see it anyway. One is important and the other isnt. One is an important part of the AFL landscape and the other is simply a temporary custodian of one of our jumpers.

Nothing i saw made me think it was anything but a simple copycat exercise.
If people are too stupid to know who #23 is they likely cant read anyway. You cant see it and it offers absolutely no benefit to anyone.

It wont matter though...if there's a buck to be made by selling to the gullible then it will stay no matter how useless and dumb it is. They'll now muck around with the numbers and make them smaller..guaranteed.

A seriously weird distinction you make there. OK for the club to gain revenue though sponsorship by lrrelevent third parties, but gaining revenue by selling merch directly relevant to the core function of the club is a "cynical marketing exercise"?

" One is an important part of the AFL landscape and the other is simply a temporary custodian of one of our jumpers."?

Well, I've seen it all now.

And white is the new black.

What are you, some sort of numerologist? I couldn't give a stuff who's worn a particular jumper number before. Means nothing. Unless you want to make the case that somehow these numbers are infused with some weird uncanny power which modern science simply can't explain.

"If people are too stupid to know who #23 is they likely cant read anyway."

Funny, that.

I know who #23 for my team is.

But, although I can read, I don't know who #23 is for each of the other 17 teams. I have enough time in my life to avidly, obsessively, follow my team's fortunes, but not all of the others. Sorry. Guess I'm not much of a footy fan eh. From now on, at the start of each new season, I promise to try to find time in my life to memorise and cross-match the names, faces and numbers of 700 odd players.

Assuming I fail hugely in that task, I suspect I'm not atypical, in not being averse to occasionally increasing my knowledge of opposition players in an incidental way.

I think the reasons against are two-fold. Firstly, there is the intent behind it, it is not to make it easier for people to identify players; that is why we have footy records. It is clear they are to make money off merch, plain and simple - anyone who doubts this is plain naive.

Secondly, there are jumper traditionalists who like one aspect of the game not to be brought into modern day. I think this is admirable and let's face it, its kinda oldschool grabbing a footy record and referring to it to find out who a player is. For those playing at home, there is always afl.com.au or footywire. :thumbsu:

Personally I'd rather watch every second of the game than have to keep burying my nose in the Record, but maybe that's just me.

And you don't think selling a shiteload of 'Franklin' jumpers will benefit your club?

Sydney just mortgaged their future to buy a publicity machine, I bet they'd love to be able to recoup some of that money by sticking his name on the back of a bunch of merchandise.

Footy Records exist to make money off of as well...

One would think it'd be a great honor for a player to get their name on a jumper.

The clubs don't even sell retail jumpers with the numbers printed on currently, unless they start selling the jumpers with the names/numbers printed on I doubt they will make much from the heat pressed stuff.

The AFL obviously disagrees

Try being named Sidebottom or Spanger and tell me that's what you want on your back

You greatly underestimate the cult of Spangher, be careful or his devout followers will be on to you!

The people opposed to players having their names on their tops are being ridiculous. It's a fantastic idea. There were players last night that I didn't know, but learnt who they were from the name at the back of their tops. Of course you wouldn't know who they are from distance, but when close up of them are shown, you can clearly see their name. About time the AFL even thought of this idea. This should be added immediately.

It's worked for many years. Or you can just learn the player's names beforehand; it isn't hard.
