Crows' Best 22 (2014 Edition)

You can look at stats if you want but if you review where Henderson was at pre injury i can give you a 99.99% guarantee that Henderson is best 22….easily.

Smith is the only one who can do a comparable role to his level, and Smith may be moved upfield.

I do agree we won't see the real Hendo this season.

Based on what? His last 7 games of 2013? Needs more than that to be considered an automatic best 22 player.

Yes based on the consistency of that, supported by the glimpses seen previously AND the skill set he brings.

Tall, athletic, extremely skilful, top level quick, great decision maker, attacking, versatile (both in terms of playing forward or back and height of opponent he can cover)…no chance a fully fit Hendo plays SANFL for the rest of his career.

Where does VB actually fit into our 22 though? I know it sounds extremely rough, but we seem to have a half decent line up already as Ive listed below.

HB: Smith
C: Sloane Thompson Mackay
HF: Douglas
R: Jacobs Dangerfield Kerridge

I: B Crouch, M Crouch, Laird, Wright, Grigg

I would want all of these players to be getting a game ahead of VB. Like I said I know its harsh, and he is our captain, but I genuinely prefer others in the side. He could however go back to being our primary tagger, and send Kerridge back to a lead up HF, with Douglas being named in the midfield.

Would not want him on the HBF. Doesnt have the pace, the agility or the aerial strength to defend a fire hydrant let alone a specialist forward. Opposition players would run rings around him...

VB is very good overhead & would add some hardness to the backline.

For starters he is ahead of every player you named on the interchange - except B Crouch.

Lets all remember as well, when VB went down hardly no one dismissed our chances of making the 8. I think that illustrates his current value to the team.

I generally agree with you but by R1 2015 I'm sure M Crouch will be superior. Grigg likely will be as well.
I have no doubt that a fit VB will be in our best-22 & that Sando/selection committee will think the same.

Having said that, I believe he should give up the captaincy & concentrate on playing good footy.

Ive never really known VB for his overhead prowess. If he were to play in the backline he would be playing on those tricky/silky medium/small forwards who would genuinely run circles around him. He can certainly lay a tackle and will put in 110% effort, but I would honestly rather Laird. VB doesn't have the athletic ability to directly match up with most forwards is what im trying to point out, and would really only have a suitable opponent in small number of games against certain sides. More than happy to throw him back there and see but I dont have my hopes set high.

And come 2015, if VB is keeping someone like Junior and Grigg out of the side I really wont be happy at all.

You should go back & watch some old footage as VB is very solid overhead. I'm happy with Brown, but VB would be an upgrade & he is also ahead of Laird, who I rate too. Saying VB is not athletic is crazy stuff as he is 1 of the fittest at the club! Reckon he would add some hardness &leadership (when Truck goes) to the backline, like Bickley used to.

As a defender, sorry but I'd have to say Brown >>> VB.

A guy like Elliott would run rings around VB.
Time will tell, but I'm 99.99% confident a fit VB will in our starting 22.

Im not talking about his engine, gut running would attribute very little to making a good defender, apart from getting on the end up some good link work up the ground. Inside the 50 when the heat is on, explosiveness off the mark, agility and top speed is what Id be more concerned about, none of which VB is renowned for.

Not saying that he wont be in the 22, I just honestly prefer some of the younger players in our side, and reckon that they have more to offer this club going forward. Thats compared to VB who is already a very limited player and will be turning 29 in the 2015 season.

For starters VB is quicker than Brown. I have seen him play plenty of quality games as a defender. It's like every defence, you need a mix of players with different attributes.

VB's main problem prior to his injury was that Sando was using him as a fixit player & he didn't settle into any particular role.

I have absolutely no doubt that VB will settled into a handy player next year.

Nope.

Well my 22.. if everyone is healthy now.

B: Brown - Rutten - Hartigan
HB: Smith - Talia - Jaesnch
C: Mackay - Dangerfield - Sloane
HF: Douglas - Tex - Lynch
FF: Betts - Jenkins - Cameron
R: Jacobs - B.Crouch - Kerridge
INT: Grigg - Podsiadly- Laird Sub: M.Crouch

VB isn't in my best 22, he's decent depth, but on HBF? I'd rather Jaesnch's leg. Tagger? Kerridge has done fantastic and is shaping up to be a gun midfielder when he's let off to his own devices HFF? Douglas and Lynch are both in our top 10 players. Bench? I'd rather put games in Grigg and M. Crouch.

Pods has won me over and is a decent swingman, Henderson is speculative if he can return to pre-injury form.

Isn't this last week's team?

Id swap Grigg for VB but other than that its the same. Means we have Grigg, Otten, Hendo, Martin and the very unlucky Lyons as more than capable replacements.

Frustrating to see players like Lynch and BCrouch on the sidelines, they really significantly improve our team. Next year we are going to have possibly an interesting selection issue with VB, as I prefer Kedge and I believe he offers more and has more weapons and is only going to get better.

The delistings at seasons end is another do we persist with players like Smack who has become Dopey again, LJ and Petrenko. Reilly is finished IMO his last decent game against a good opposition was in 2012. The Truck should be parked and delisted at the end of the year. Graham should go as well.

But thats 6 players just for starters, Im sure there are others out there that also may not survive the year.

Martin is certainly out of the 'definitely delist' category. It may still happen but he's doing his best to keep an AFL career at present.

McKernan unfortunately doing the opposite.

Graham, LJ, Petrenko should be gone for sure, maybe a low level trade for Petrenko can be found.

Reilly amazingly has a contract for 2015.
