I reckon when Hawthorn drop off there'll be a massive move in numbers. Wouldn't surprise me if there was a big jump next year with Cats fans jumping off.

Collingwood and Essendon are the two largest AFL membership clubs, imo they are the ones that will provide the biggest move in numbers.

Yeah, can't be a huge drop off if there weren't big numbers there to start with. If there are Collingwood fans considering dropping out you'll start to move up very quick.

Can't complain though, got my full membership way back in 1992 after just 2 years as a restricted member. Anyone else here join up back when it was still just Waverley Park membership?

Yep. Old man signed us up in 91 I believe. The deal then was you went straight to Full when the GSS was completed for the 92 world cup.

You could get into Optus Oval. Not sure about the other suburban grounds. I remember going to Windy Hill in 92, and Western Oval and Victoria Park during the 90's, but I can't remember if AFL granted access. Definitely remember sitting in the outer at Vic Park, so most likely not.

$6 into any ground... Unheard of now. You pay more than that in a bollocks booking fee to print your own damn ticket on your own damn resources. What the?

Southern Stand level 2 wing finals tickets in 93, 94 and 95... $25 a pop... glorious -except for 94...

In '99 Prelim I still only paid $35 to go.

It was just Waverley Park membership until the completion of the Southern Stand in time for the Cricket World Cup in 1992. I believe the AFL funded a large % of the Southern Stand in return for the dedicated member's area. For a while you used to get 30 games a year at whatever combination of the G, Waverley and Optus Oval suited you.

From memory, it was in the mid 90s that they brought in the concept of adding the 'Club Support' element of the membership. You nominated your club, and in return got entry to all 11 home games regardless of the venue. I used to get into Victoria Park free, for example. You then could use the balance of 19 games at any of the 3 main Melbourne venues.

The Club Support part still survives to this day. This means that your club receives an amount equal to a standard 11 game membership from your AFL membership fee and you are counted towards the club's members tally.

AFL membership grew massively in the mid to late 90s when people realised you could easily get GF tickets, along with the move of nearly all the major blockbusters to the G.

Now that Waverley and Optus Oval are gone it is largely the G and Docklands where you have entry rights, however you currently get free entry to games at GWS if your team is playing, as well as discounted prices at ANZ Stadium. In the past you got free entry into the SANFL members area at Football Park for Port games, and I think there were similar arragements for Freo games at Subi up to a few years age as well.

There's some seating maps that are still in the Legends Stand that says bays 1-5 are for MCC and AFL members. These seats were located in the forward pocket, next to the old John Elliot Stand.

In the past you got free entry into the SANFL members area at Football Park for Port games, and I think there were similar arragements for Freo games at Subi up to a few years age as well.

I'm sure I went to a Freo v Carlton game over in Perth once about 8 years ago as an AFL/Carlton member.

Also remember going to Peter Dean last game at Football Park with my membership back in about last round 1998.
I was over there for a few days and on the Monday dropped in Adelaide Casino for an hour or two around lunch time.
Little did I know Port Adelaide players were having their mad Monday in there. Will never forgive Scott Cummings for being a complete knob when I was trying to play Blackjack... The dipstick kept calling on 16 against dealer 10 and made me lose so many hands it was not funny. Then a few good hands I won on double down he tries to claim he helped me out...lol.. frikkin idiot...I just had to laugh it off after a while and say "thanks a lot champ!"

Getting back on topic. The AFL Membership also allows us to go half price to cricket at the G in summer.
Pretty handy if goto 3 or 4 cricket games over summer.
Have a feeling for World Cup it does not apply.

Grew up in East Burwood, 10km from Waverley and over 20km from Victoria Park. Used to get home much faster from Victoria Park, even though it was before the Eastern Freeway existed. It feels like I spent half my childhood stuck in that bloody Waverley carpark.

I remember a game out at Waverley around 1988 or 89 with Carlton v Collingwood where we get out of the actual car park onto Wellington road heading east and traffic backed up so far it was no point leaving engine on. I think turned it off a good half an hour or more and did not move. Probably was easier getting bus from ground to Glen Waverley railway station or Nunawading station.

Added my 2yo son to the OP who I joined up a month after he was born (Dec 12)
Its a pretty good system for kids under 7, pay the joining fee and they go on the waiting list. Nothing more to pay until they are 7.

Also as a side note, the guy on the phone said this year they took in members who joined in 06/07. So I wonder if its strictly related to the year you joined and not necessarily an exact number.

It's by an exact number which would correlate to a period of time eg. 06/07.

I rang up to confirm he will keep getting bumped up the waitlist even though I don't have to pay anything more for him until he's 7. Great deal bit I guess he gets into the ground for free anyway when I decide to take him (he won't be 2 until next March).

I wonder how many people will spit the dummy (ie Essendon supporters if they are guilty, other supporters if they are not guilty) and start following the soccer or VFL more closely. A good thing for those on AFL membership waiting lists but not a good thing to have so many supporters disenfranchised with the game.

I don't know if you are aware that you can reserve a seat on that Under 7 Membership.
It shows up as baby if you decide to scan in with it.
I used to do so for the real big games like ANZAC day.

Yeah I did it for the Queen's Bday game this year - not many games I have to reserve seats for at the moment.

joined vfl waverly in 87 expecting the gf to be played there. Then GSS got built and was given full membership in 92. Membership started to fill up once Waverley was gone and Vic Park and Windy Hill were no longer used
