Review R5: Port v Adelaide Review

He endlessly talks up Adelaide no matter who they're playing or where they're coming from. It gets nauseating and I'm a huge Dwayne fan right back from his playing days.

Dwayne Russell used to be one of the more balanced and sensible callers, particularly when he was doing reports on radio for the abc.
It appears he has now become commercialised, and a lot of the stuff that comes out of his mouth is downright cringeworthy.

As for Chris Dittmar, for a bloke with such a famous Port Adelaide name one word describes him, and that is pathetic.

I doubt it PAF. I don't think it's sustainable either. The good teams will work out how to maximise the i50 entries eventually.
I think we are debating chicken and egg type stuff.
For mine the egg came first and the high number is occurring because we have fumbled or cocked up something simple at crucial stages when rebounding.

Yesterday we mucked up a the second or third kick or handball when rebounding for them to pump it back in. Some of those muck ups were simple skill errors such as a kick falling short or a handball to the wrong player.

Fix those up and the count will go decrease.

EDIT: Plus the artificially high number for both sides that is a result of the ping pong due to the high press all teams use. This is the bit referred to when comparing to games from yesteryear, not the above that will get looked at and fixed.

The narrowness of AO means you have less real estate to profit from relieving kicks to the flank and wing too in full press situations too.

More chance of packs. Less chance of clean marks. More chance of teams bringing it to ground and pumping it back in. This is in stark contrast to Footy Park with its fatter width, where you were looking at a boundary throw-in scenario most of the time.

We were running it out last year. This year we kick it to the same spot, every time. With the same players there. Lobbe needs to take contested marks.

That's never been his specialty.

We got a good ride from the umpires for a change. I'm sure there will be an email from Fages to AFL House requesting #balance.

We have got a more even run the last couple weeks. Which is to say that the umpires were consistently s**t. Like unfathomably s**t. 15+ HTB decisions cocked up. I don't get that after they changed the rule so that it is stricter that they can consistently not pay decisions that were HTB under the old interpretation. It takes me back to the prelim where I swear they got the rule wrong 80% of the time. I have said many a time ... the only good umpiring is when they make few mistakes, not when they are even to both sides. If they consistently get the decision wrong it will cost someone sometime. History tells us it will be in a Prelim and it will involve Hawthorn somehow (they are up 2:1 on the prelim robberies so maybe they lose one this year?)

just want to say good win last night. In a way and this may sound stupid and not taking away anything from your win but maybe the crows losing is a good thing because if we were to have won many crows supporters and players would've started getting carried away thinking we are top 4.

Im a realistic crows supporter and i can see that the crows are years off being a top 4 team. Anyway good luck for the rest of the year (just kidding but hey we can all agree on one thing and that is our hate for Collingwood)

Wrt to the inside 50 count, we're having a lot of trouble from kick ins, bombing it long to outnumbered contests with the ball coming straight back in. Crows looked a bit better IMO, although we probably set up different defensively. Would like to see a bit more play in action from Jasper/Broady so that we're getting 80-90 metres up the field.

Thanks for dropping by. Despite the ship we give them, I don't think the Crows are so far from being a top 4 team unfortunately.

I just pinched this from the Crows forum:

"Just read these damning statistics (my eyes are still bleeding):

We used the ball at 62% DE by foot
Down to 47% DE in our forward half
Even worse we were only 43% DE inside 50.

The Scum scored on almost 60% of their inside 50 entries and had an amazing 72% DE inside 50.

FFS what use is having a lopsided 71-42 inside 50 count when you butcher it like we did last night?

Do we even have a skills coach?"

That tells the story pretty well.

I found Westhoff playing with a bit of swagger. He was a bit casual at times but would still get possessions off clean majority of the time with 82% efficiency.
He was majestic in full flight - I likened him to Falcor from The Neverending Story.
That Overhead Kick into goals was pure Class! He played it off like it was just another day at work...

I so much want to lurking like their game day banner of 'we also drive as one too'

I have no idea of those stats in general but 43% DE i50 doesn't sound terrible. I think the outlier would be 72% for us which seems absurd considering that's normal for an entire game.

The last two weeks has shown just how much straight kicking for goals can make a difference, on a day of boxing we played the old rope a dope on the crows.
They had the inside 50s and kept throwing punches but nothing was landing,we would counter punch them and take the points (should say goals).
Things that stood out for me today

We have been missing for years that tall forward who can take a mark and kick a goal,it was hoped that Butcher could be the answer in time but out of the blue like a bolt of lightning comes Paddy Ryder.
This guy is a seriously good footballer and just makes our forward line look so much better, with him and Jay plus our small runners its about the perfect mix.
I think a special mention should go out to the best full back in the comp....Bobs for Jobs Carlile, he is a bigger part of our rise than he gets credit for, also my old mate Jasper needs a mention as he has been the most improved player on our list this year.

All in all a good solid win without being brilliant, lets hope we can carry some momentum into the next couple of weeks in games we SHOULD win.
He made a smart call. One that takes a very smart footy brain. If he tried any other kick it wouldve been touched, but he was smart enough to realize that going over his head removes all possibility of it being touched.

I've personally done this before in a goal square and to flat out talk myself up I was pretty happy with how clever it was and so should the Hoff, turned an almost disaster into a goal.
yep agreed
It was actually the lower percentage option to kick that way especially that close to goal
It may look spectacular but it was an easy kick from there and shouldn't be compared with a soccer player intercepting a high speed volley hanging upside down doing a backwards scissor kick etc

As a self proclaimed "Grammar Nazi" - They need a serious lesson in grammar. Also and Too do not belong in the same sentence structure.
Should have been... 'Drive as one two'
