In - Dunkley (if fit) - Ah Chee and Dev Robertson.

Out - Lyons - Berry and make Zorko sub.

If Dunkley - Ah Chee and Robertson play entire match last night we don't lose.

Gunston needs to perform every week for me to stay in side. He won't get dropped because he kicked 3 goals last night.

Rich I think is 25/26th best player now. Can't carry his lack of speed or accountability.

Berry subbed and Zorko not gut running into space in the last definitely feels like both are underdone/niggled still. I think they'll be left in at this point to get fitness in the games.

I know we have some tough games but not sure this will help trying to carry more injured players late in the season. Didnt work last year, hasn't worked this year. Why not try and learn and change it up?

We have more guys on the list who can play while they are managed

think id keep gunston in against popular opinion here

daniher had one of his best games at brisbane in the second and third quarters almost purely in his work around stoppages up the ground. if we did not have gunston in i dont think he would have had that luxury of playing that much time out of forward 50. it was pretty clear at the ground may had hipwoods measure. without gunston, petty and lever would have ran riot being able to play unaccountable in the back half and intercepting a heap of the ball - we saw that happen last week to st kilda when they lost key position players early in the game and were rudderless entering forward 50.

i thought our real drop off in defensive application was in the midfield through both major patches of the game when melbourne spanked us. the forward pressure was good for the most part and we looked a million bucks in the second and third. gunston played his role well as a part of this. dont see how forward half pressure was an issue when the ball lived in melbournes inside 50 for a good 20 minutes at the bookends of the game

i would not swing him back to protect leads though. i think the coaches need to accept gunston is a forward only - his level of contribution falls off a cliff as soon as hes not an offensive threat because hes treacle slow. maybe when we go into putting the game on ice mode we should leave him as a 1 out in the forward line instead of how we usually have cameron there. far less speed out the back but smart enough to get the spring on a defender caught out of position in transition.

i would do the following

JL --> dunkley
berry -->ah chee
zorko swap for sub with robertson

There are plenty of signs that Zorko is cooked rather than underdone. The cliff can come quickly at that age.

Might be the same for Rich. Though it’s clear that while he may not fit in the structure, Gunston is still decent after the fitness block.

Zorko still had some good moment with some very good penetration on his kicks but obviously that’s not the main concern.

Which is great, but last night showed bringing players who have injury and fitness clouds around them in without going through the twos is a massive risk.

That out selection panel have been comfortable with.

The first and last 12 minutes were rubbish. Dishing that up in the finals will be horrible.

Out: Berry, Lyons

In: Sharp, Dunkley

Sub: Ah Chee

It was a bit of a rough game to say the least but I don’t think it was lost at selection. We got thoroughly outplayed in the last well before we sent Gunston back. The oncoming goals felt inevitable when Gawn dominates in the air and at stoppages.

Either Berry was subbed due to form or because he was still a bit hurt but either way I think it’s best not to force it in the seniors. I didn’t think he was terrible which is why I think he was just not 100%. Sharp played great on the wing earlier in the year and would love for him to come back in.

Lyons for Dunkley is an obvious one. We got cooked in stoppages in the end and it wasn’t all on Lyons but I still feel it’s the reasonable swap.

Would be fine with Ah Chee for Gunston but Jack still did well and most importantly converted his chances which helped us a lot.

Would also be fine with Robertson for Zorko as he looked a bit slow but not the most pressing issue.

We didn't contest in the first 15 minutes and that's on the mid field. Mostly.

Lachie isn't a contested player.
He's a slip through the cracks skilled player. Needs protection.

Dunkley does that but he is a highly skilled player who shouldn't be wasted as a security guard.

If it's true that zorko and Lyons both had well less than 50% of game time, I'd prefer to bring in matho.

For half a game he can bash and crash and create gaps for lachie to slip through. Exhaust and terrify the opposition.

Don't expect anything from matho except brownlow points for lachie.

the only player who had less than 50% tog was robertson who was the starting sub

lyons played 69% tog
zorko played 72% tog

i actually find colemans 68% tog more concerning than either. he really needs to work on his tank and capacity to run out games

Having 3 or 4 in the team who couldn't really run it out we did a good job to get so far in front and only go down last minute.

That's not a great consolation unless we do something about it.

We need to work out what we want to do with Rayner. As a third tall, his role was defined and he was able to perform in it. As a whatever forward, he's a little like a jack of some trades, master of none.

Would be a very hard position to play.

He's having a nothing year where he's shown flashes of brilliance but overall hardly ever able to get amongst our best players.

It seems as if he's a wasted talent in whatever his current role is . If we're to contend this year an impactful Rayner would be a big plus.

If Dunkley is not 100% then surely we don’t risk him. Too important to us. Would like to see Robertson for Lyons, Ah Chee for Gunston. Potentially Sharp for Berry.

In Fort Ah Chee Dunkley Dev
Out O Gunston Lyons Berry

I’d also be tempted to replace Zorko with more run, Sharp, Lohmann or Tunstill.

We need more running power. The old guys are not it anymore. The coaches need to trust what the younger players can bring. Look at what Ashcroft, Fletcher and Wilmot have offered this year over guys like Rich and Lyons.

Is it a common occurrence or a one off? I noticed there were a few times where he was stuck on the bench because our defence was under the pump, plus the smaller defenders usually end up with more bench time in rotations since Andrews and Payne play near 100%.

Pretty sure he is regularly low tog%. And he's been subbed out a couple of times. His fitness isn't quite there.

He's not the worst in the team by a long way, but when coming down the final stretch in big games he is another weak link in our team

FWIW I expect us to belt the Cats next week with Lachie Neale to have a massive game.

Unfortunately, it is not how Rayner has been socialised under Fagan. He lacks resilience because throughout his career to date, he has been sheltered from adversity. No matter how poorly he plays, he knows Fagan will give him a mulligan and he is guaranteed to be selected the next week. If Rayner’s stats from last night had the name Prior, Robertson, Madden, Lohmann, Mathieson or Sharp next to them, they would be dropped the next week without a second thought from Fagan. Because it’s Cam though, the mulligan card comes out and he is waved straight into the team for next week. It has all come too easy for Rayner.

My son is hyped about the game. Didn't like the first 15 minutes, or shutting down too early.

But says the rest was super exciting and we are lucky to enjoy this period of success.

How the hell did I raise a footy optimist?!?
What did he say about the Hawthorn game? ;)

Matho has a hammy and hasn't been available for selection for at least the last 2-3 weeks. Was not an option tonight and probably won't be for a few more.

They both are badly restricted by leg issues and can’t run at full pace atm which is one of their strengths. Very dangerous to play players with leg issues against top teams on a big ground, and both were found out last night. Neither should have played imo, or at best Zorko could have been the sub and played the last quarter.
