no prior, all you have to do is try to dispose, if you drop it whilst trying to legitimately dispose of it then it is play on, it's only a free if you deliberately drop it


Here we go again. I reckon I should have some sort of speed dial to this law. This is the law you're talking about

has not had a prior opportunity to dispose of the football, the
field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against that Player if,

upon being Correctly Tackled, the Player does not Correctly
Dispose or genuinely attempt to Correctly Dispose of the
football after being given a reasonable opportunity to
do so

The law doesn't say that the player can just drop the ball. It says they must attempt to correctly dispose of the ball after being given a chance to get rid of it correctly.
If I'm lying on my back with one hand pinned and the other holding the ball I'm not allowed to throw it at my foot and then miss stating that I was making an attempt to correctly dispose of it.
If the ball is knocked out of your hands, tough luck, free against you.
