I have 0 doubt that even if Kennedy were to miss due to his lisfranc that Carroll Walsh Cerra and Hewett will be able to cover for him next season. The only concern is when we miss multiple of our starting mids at the same time for an extended period. Williams, Doch, Fish, Cunners... They may not be reliable for 22 games a year on ball but they can all adequately cover for a game if the majority of the big 5 are playing.

Add to that we'll almost certainly be adding a midfielder with one of our early picks this year who will hopefully be able to play their 5-6 minutes a quarter as a rotation if desperately needed.

Unless he has some major revelation, I doubt we'll regret Setters leaving. I never really got why he was so highly rated in the first place.

I still believe in Dow. He has what our midfield lacks. OTOH, our midfield has what he lacks. Hopefully his gap closes this preseason.

Even if Setterfield prospers, he was never suited to the wing (which was the only real available position) and there were far better players ahead of him for the inside mid role.

As for Dow, if he wants to be anything other than depth, he has to work on his tank and add another string to his bow. Hewett is an absolute inside mid machine and we reaped the rewards of his acquisition. MK can also do the inside work but can also present as a forward option. Dow is billed as being 187cm and 85 kgs. If he worked on his set shot kicking then reinventing himself as a half forward player (and push Martin out) could be a way back into the team.

Dow needs to work on decision making and disposal. Does some good inside work, has some wheels and can accelerate away from stoppages, could find it more often but mainly lets himself down with disposal and decision making. Confidence might be a factor but he has been in the system a few years now and if he wasn't a former pick 3 would have been delisted when he signed his last extension. Unless he pulls a Matty Kennedy and transforms himself over the pre-season, hard to see him getting a new contact this time next year.

100%. The kid is best suited to being an extractor, but the minute he finds the ball, it's the release that lets him down. There are only so many players you can carry with that deficiency. If he had other qualities to his game then you could probably let it go to a degree, but he's too much of a one trick pony for now. Hopefully he does do an MK and puts in a massive pre-season and gets regular games.

Most traded players look out of place the first time you see them in their new team's jumper.

Then there's Rankine...

The mullet, the blonde tips, the facial hair. The Adelaide jumper instantly looks so natural.
Or;
  • Thank fu## I got out of Gold Coast
  • So happy, won't have Dew stealing my lunch money and sandwiches anymore
  • Won't have to hear Tony Cochrane's bloody voice in the rooms or at the club anymore or have to listen to one of his lectures
  • Playing in front of 5000 people was soul destroying when we were doing well! Here at Adelaide we can still be shyte and play in front of 40000.

A few thoughts on the trade period
Cats -Great to get pick 7 for a salary dump but otherwise picked up 3 guys that may not get a game next year and gave up on a year 3 1st round pick
Tigers- picked up 2 one paced mids that could change the Tigers round style of footy while burning up a heap of picks. Needed to bolster the midfield with early mids like Dow and RCD not coming on.
Pies - Not sold on the moves. McStay is an average player on huge money, Mitchell is a crab when similar players like Crouch are out of style. Losing Grundy weakens their list. Him coming back from injury would have made them better. took 5 players in the top 30 in 2020 and only 2 are left (assuming the uncontracted Poulter isn't offered a contract). Youth isn't as deep as they would like to put forward.
Lions are big winners. Paying for the best player in the draft with a bunch of low picks is ridiculous. AFL needs to revisit the values assigned to picks as it doesn't reflect reality.
Freo - Can see them missing the 8 next year. Have lost a heap of players and Jackson is massively over rated. O'Meara is very much a b grader
Dees - Don't really see the need for Grundy on their list. They would have been better off chasing Lobb.
Dogs - Think Dunkley is a big loss from the midfield which isn't that young. Lobb and Jones should help with their tall stocks

Don't forget Ed Curnow as a reasonable fill in of depth.

Will be interesting to see what happens at the Hawks. Massive loss of experience. You have to wonder whether some young players won't come on due to the side being less competitive. Given how little they got for the trades it seems a poor strategy to me.

Tigers going in for one last dip whilst Dusty, Cotchin, Riewoldt are still moving and Hardwick I suspect will move himself on within 2 years (I anticipate he'll be Ports coach come 2024).

Collingwood, almost feels like they hope they'll perform as they did in 22.... expecting a year older Pendles to still be their most consistent and top 5 player as well as Sidebottom who had a blinding year after a few downhill ones. Will second year blues hit young Daicos? And clubs will focus a lot more on him, hence being smart on the Mitchell acquisition. Culturally Grundy will be a loss within and expecting Cox to have another semi decent year is quite funny. And DeGoey will go back to his comfort zone now he has a nice contract.

Dees, did well. I suspect big Max is playing injured and sore more weeks than not and Grundy and he in tandem will give them another shot at it. They got cocky after a decent start in 2022 and thought it'd just happen like it did in 21. My premiership favourites at this point in time.

Cats will still make finals and prob finish top 2 on the ladder as per normal. Selwood will nominate himself for the midseason draft due to a superb plan to keep him nice and fresh and ready for tail end of the season.

Freo treading water.

Dogs, screwed.. lets not forget they only made finals because we choked. They need Libba and Bont to have a very decent 23.

Lions... they don't play as a team, they have too many individuals and many who have one too many brain farts. Their home ground advantage will help them but still see them choking come finals.

With Selwood retiring I don't think he can nominate for the midseason draft for 18months which was the issue with Liam Jones.

Freo have got plenty of young stars that they will continue to improve and will win enough games at home to push top 4

Agree, but it's also Hawthorn so i don't really care. Would love for them to return to the doldrums.

Makes the Amon pick up even more strange. 27 YO who is a winger not a mid. Meanwhile they have turfed out JOM 28 YO and Titch 29 YO - their senior mids.

Can anyone make sense of this?

Sam Mitchell wanted to do this last year. Club said no.

I don't understand the Amon signing now either unless it was a "you'll help us reach the salary floor in years two and three after we've finished paying for JOM."

However, they turfed two blokes that aren't great trainers and therefore questionable leaders at best.

You turf out your older players on high salaries and get draft picks in return.

Then you replace them with free agents, costing you nothing but salary that you just saved.

In theory you get the same output but you gain net draft picks.

Problem is Hawks executed this poorly and didn't get enough draft capital to make it worth it.

I argued this years ago as a rebuild strategy.

Imagine we did the Gibbs trade and then picked up a free agent roughly as good as him.

We would have pocketed the Gibbs bounty 'for free'.

Obviously there are culture implications from selling off players and high turnover etc. So it needs to be managed delicately.

But in cases like Gibbs where the player wants to leave and you are blessed to be negotiating with Justin Reid.... It makes sense to me.

Brisbane's trade result is interesting. On the surface, a fantastic result for them, picking up Gunston and Dunkley, who will surely provide them a boost, and keep them in contention next year. But I can understand why the Dunkley deal took till the last minute. The loss of pick 21 will hurt them.

They are left with 7 picks between 34 and 73, providing a points total of 2441. They'll be hoping like hell that GWS do not bid on Ashcroft, as it will take 2400 points to match. If the bid comes at pick 2, it's a more reasonable 2014 to match, anything lower and they're sitting pretty. If a bid on Fletcher comes at say pick 20, it'll be another 751 points to match.

However, they won't be able to use the full 2441 points.

They have 36 primary list players (3 of which are uncontracted). They have 3 Rookie-A list players.

If they delist the 3 that are uncontracted, that will still give them only 5 picks at the draft (38-33). They may be able to move one contracted player to the rookie list to get a 6th pick perhaps.

But if it's only 5 picks, their current draft hand would yield 2238 points. If they can get the 6th pick, then only pick 73 is wasted, and it's only worth 9 points, so they'll have 2432 to spend.

Either way, it's highly likely they'll go into points debt in 2023. And their 2023 draft hand is also very weak.

So, lets say they have 2238 points. Bids for Ashcroft and Fletcher come in at 2 and 20. That's 2729 to match, incurring a debt for next year of 489 points. That would make their 2023 draft hand an unimpressive 49, 52 and 53. Limiting in both their ability to trade, and their draft options. Let alone if there are more academy kids next year!

So, while they've done well with the players they've traded in, and they'll get both Ashcroft and Fletcher, their 3rd pick this year will be at the back end of the draft, and their 2023 draft is heavily compromised.

In my opinion they'll still come out well ahead.

A current B&F, the consensus #1 pick in the draft, another highly touted academy player and a premiership winning veteran who understands the system he's moving into?

That's worth gambling one draft for when they believe they wont have a high pick to begin with.
