Draft Order and selection summary

In my opinion they'll still come out well ahead.

A current B&F, the consensus #1 pick in the draft, another highly touted academy player and a premiership winning veteran who understands the system he's moving into?

That's worth gambling one draft for when they believe they wont have a high pick to begin with.
Winners of the trade period imo with Geelong.

Brisbane's trade result is interesting. On the surface, a fantastic result for them, picking up Gunston and Dunkley, who will surely provide them a boost, and keep them in contention next year. But I can understand why the Dunkley deal took till the last minute. The loss of pick 21 will hurt them.

They are left with 7 picks between 34 and 73, providing a points total of 2441. They'll be hoping like hell that GWS do not bid on Ashcroft, as it will take 2400 points to match. If the bid comes at pick 2, it's a more reasonable 2014 to match, anything lower and they're sitting pretty. If a bid on Fletcher comes at say pick 20, it'll be another 751 points to match.

However, they won't be able to use the full 2441 points.

They have 36 primary list players (3 of which are uncontracted). They have 3 Rookie-A list players.

If they delist the 3 that are uncontracted, that will still give them only 5 picks at the draft (38-33). They may be able to move one contracted player to the rookie list to get a 6th pick perhaps.

But if it's only 5 picks, their current draft hand would yield 2238 points. If they can get the 6th pick, then only pick 73 is wasted, and it's only worth 9 points, so they'll have 2432 to spend.

Either way, it's highly likely they'll go into points debt in 2023. And their 2023 draft hand is also very weak.

So, lets say they have 2238 points. Bids for Ashcroft and Fletcher come in at 2 and 20. That's 2729 to match, incurring a debt for next year of 489 points. That would make their 2023 draft hand an unimpressive 49, 52 and 53. Limiting in both their ability to trade, and their draft options. Let alone if there are more academy kids next year!

So, while they've done well with the players they've traded in, and they'll get both Ashcroft and Fletcher, their 3rd pick this year will be at the back end of the draft, and their 2023 draft is heavily compromised.
I think they'll create at least the 6 list spots.
And then after the picks for Ashcroft are wiped, their later picks do come in a bit and increase in points value.

Certainly they'll be hoping for as later bids as possible.

So the Hawks lose Mitchell and O'Meara, who average a total of 48 disposals per game combined.
They lose Gunston, who was 3rd on their goal kicking tally with 32.

Odds they finish lower than 2022 - 8 wins?

bottom 2 likely few 2023 & 24 imo.

clarko's era denied the draft and kept trying to top up ala Geelong but the replacements were too expensive and never matched the output of the players they replaced. This is a necessary revisit to the draft and unlike us in 2015 have no Tuohy or Henderson to cash-in so the pain deferred is worsened.

Interesting trade period for us, and the quietest we have been for a while, which may be a good thing. Signing up all of Cripps, Charlie and Harry to long term deals (and allieviating that free agency threat) is probably as significant and important to any "trade in" any other club did in the period. Keep this core group together for 5 -7 years and that stability of our list will be important.

Our "elite" players are as good as any in the competition with Cripps, Walsh, Weitering, Doc, Saad, Charlie, and Harry.

Setterfield and Stocker are our only real loses. Not sure what happened with Stocker as he looked good to me. Acknowledge though that the club knows more than me.

Hopefully we can really hit the draft well over the next couple of years.

They have another Ashcroft coming through in 2024 so they might look to trade out of that draft to get back into 2023

A lower finish is the plan. They are trying to fast track their rebuild before Tassie expansion. They will not sweat a spoon. They have some good kids, but it is perilous cutting so deeply. Reckon they will attempt a raid on the Suns next year for their midfield leader. Wickzki might be acquainted with the likely target.

Reckon the Lions go into 2023, near enough to premiership favourites.

GWS would know this - so what do you think GWS will do - bid at #1 or not?

This is a really interesting question... GWS also have picks 15, 18 and 19. If they really fancied Fletcher, they might bid on Ashcroft at 1, making it very difficult for Brisbane to match a bid for Fletcher at say, 15.

But I really don't think they will. They've gone to extraordinary lengths to get pick #1, and must have a particular player in mind for that pick. They wouldn't take the risk that Brisbane might say 'no' to matching Ashcroft, and end up with him instead of their intended target (Cadman almost certainly).

Who is actually ranked higher anyway Ashcroft or Cadman?
If GWS rate Ashcroft higher - why wouldn't they bid and test Brisbane out?

I’m sick of clubs not bidding on F/S or Academy players when they should be bid on, Daicos last year was criminal.

You make your opposition pay for their good fortune, at all times. There’s zero chance Brisbane wont match at pick 1 and 15 onwards for Fletcher.

What does it mean when someone says, "Top 4 or top 6 next year otherwise it's a fail"?

Are we closing up shop next year if indeed 2023 is deemed as a "failed" year... or does it mean we rebuild...? Or what?

Explain to me what "failed" means thanks and the consequences of a failed 2023 please?

So we still have our first 2 picks this year and next, added a player to the starting team - one who was mentioned in AA discussions during the year - and lost a couple of guys who weren’t best 22.

We’ve extended all our priorities in advance with only TDK remaining, will be in a better TPP position by replacing depth players (Setterfield, Newnes, Stocker, McDonald, Parks, Williamson, Hayes) and only bringing in one senior player on a very reasonable contract and then adding the four draftees.

Pretty good period overall, will be interesting to see who we draft.

They'll definitely just go into deficit for 2023. Nothing surer. They wont let Ashcroft of Fletcher get away.

And they won’t care. Brought in one of the top rated draftees, another 1st rounder, the dogs B&F winner and a smart (but ageing) 3rd tall fwd who is a reliable kick for goal (unlike their other talls).

Paying Warnock minimum wage is overpaying Warnock. He was horrendous.
We should have left Warnock on the shelf and kept Sauce... Sauce and Kreuzer as our primary rucks with Hampson as the backup ruck/forward would have been awesome.

But... we didn't know how s**t Warnock was going to be back 2009. We should have realised it when he had ankle surgery and suffered foot stress fractures in the preseason and missed pretty much the entire year.

Was a foolish move chasing RW. We needed a 27 - 30 yr old ruck not another developing one

Four top-20 picks in 2009 -- Scully, Trengove, Gysberts, and Tapscott -- and 12 years later, a flag! What's not to like?
That year was a super impressive year really. Such an overwhelming amount of talent. Looking at it, I'm not feeling so bad about us taking Kane Lucas at 12.
