There called called score involvements or goal assists....

The AFL site has Boyd on 'averages' below every other option (Newman/Saad) at Carlton for score involvements. Vs pies he is below Markov, Noble and Quaynor. If Doc/Williams play def i personally think he struggles to find a spot.

I did like him in the final though. Good squad player at this stage unless he proves otherwise. Has to push past Williams/doc IMO.

The current truth is on average he gets low possessions, has average kicking efficiency when put to the test vs his top 4 peers. And has fewer metres gained on average which means his weaker kicking average efficiency is even worse because he is taking on easier kicks (more sideways passes that others).

On goals assists and score launches he is therabouts. But the low possession count is an issue he has to deal with.

If he ups his possessions ave 15-18 maybe that forces him into best 22. I think he is suffering from an identity crisis. Reasonable tackle average and low possessions means he is matching in stats a lockdown defender. But then he fails in some of the lockdown categories and doesnt bring any physicality/fear which is an intangible quality we could use.

Needs a 10-15% improvement which isnt out of the question. He is the opposite of moneyball on this forum as everyone overrating him for best 22 based on not much.

Guessing he doesnt have the tank for wing and can't see him forward.

I agree that Boyd has an incongruous amount of adoration by some on this board. However, I would certainly not go as far as you with the “go slows”. He is an AFL quality player and with more opportunity could possibly cement himself in a best 22 side.

The assertion that he is a walk up start to our 22 is just false. While fit for weeks, he could not get a gig in our top team at the pointy end if the season. Alex Cincotta who was literally struggling to get up physically over the last month of the season remained preferred. The over tall combination of Weitering, McGovern, Marchbank and Kemp was varied for the prelim to alter the balance and give Boyd a start, he took his chance and performed admirably.

With gun defender/rebounder Williams returning, B&F runner up Newman and All-Australian Saad, we will struggle to find room for Cincotta week to week, let alone Boyd. Then there is developing young gun Cowan who will command games.

Boyd is a decent, perhaps better than decent option to call upon, but will need to elevate further to have any hope of locking down a spot in the top team.

With Williams, Saad, Newman and Docherty at or approaching 30, we have to consider the next generation of defenders. Likely Cowan will be groomed as the 7th defender in the near future. If we can afford to carry all of Cowan, Cincotta and Boyd over the next 3-4 years(and they are patient), we have a readymade next wave already in the wings. Highly likely at least one of the Camporeale boys will give us another developing option in that area soon.

Our tall defenders remain a larger question mark. Weitering has five or so years as the lynchpin ahead, but arguably needs a developing key position progression in the near future. Potentially, Lewis Young can rediscover his confidence and some synergy with Weiters to alleviate the pressing need for another option. Sam Durdin remains an excellent insurance option, with more strings to his bow than many supporters realise while remaining a great mentor in our seconds.

If Boyd hadn't of been suspended I feel he would of remained in the side for the remainder of the season.

Injury interrupted season and didn't play till round 10. The way our backline plays, Newman and Saad are the key distributors. Had pretty much identical stats to Cincotta.

Stats aren't everything especially when it comes to players like Boyd who make every involvement count.

Cincotta is an AFL quality player and will be great for depth but imo Boyd can be just as competent defensively but will add more in terms of transition from D50. He can even get up the ground as we saw at times in the Prelim. The way he slotted into that team after all that time off was superb

I think the reason Cincotta kept getting picked over Boyd is he was often getting the job on the best small forwards and releasing Newman.

Despite the view many hold that Boyd would be a great small lockdown defender he has rarely if ever been deployed in this role.

Club probably figured Cincotta locking down + Newman Attacking > Newman locking down + Boyd attacking

I'll temper that last statement... we could do this:

1. Pick up two DFAs (e.g. Fantasia/Crozier)
2. Use our two draft picks to get one draft pick higher up (~15 or so)
3. At the draft upgrade 2 rookies, and just use the one draft pick.

We'd end up with 37 senior listed and 7 rookies (inc Cat-B). It'd be unusual (miss out on one rookie discount). But possible. Likely? - I'd think not.

I don't think there's enough need for Crozier to make it worth our while.

I'd definitely pick him up for the VFL and have him nominate for the draft - if he doesn't get listed elsewhere - and prioritise him midseason if we have a list spot available that he satisfies the requirement of.

Is not a clear upgrade like Orazio is (if healthy and at hjs best).

Can we save the Boyd talk for List Management or Best 22 threads, or even ... gasp ... his own player thread?

It has nothing to do with Trading or Drafting.

Crozier now delisted. Do we end up going there…?
I reckon we'll stay in touch over the pre-season as an SSP precaution.

But besides that, nah, I think with so many defensive re-signings and basically no places left on the list, Hayden's not for us

even if we have an open list spot he seems like a poor fit imo

Will Kelly is 23 and has played 5 games in his career - what has he shown to warrant a shot over a 20-year old Carroll...?
Will Kelly is 194 and about 95 kgs and was a talented key defender coming into the league from the juniors, I'm obviously not comparing him with Carroll, who unlike Kelly struggles to run out games and quarters.

Question mark on Kelly is attitude-based. Collingwood still a chance to re-rookie.
Sharp is not up to it imo.

Anyhow Port have now officially delisted Fantasia, so assume he will officially sign on with us some point this week
Sharp gets thrown around a lot, and maybe isn't quite the physical type recruiters look for as a winger, but if people are looking at Bonner they should be looking at him first.

Almost definitely Freo bound though, so it would have taken 2 years and some guarantees.

So is Orazio a CFC player yet?

Didn't He undergo a fitness test at IKON Park a couple of days ago, and waiting for Ozrazio to get the all clear before officially signing him/putting him on the list ?
