I wouldn't be paying Josh Battle 1.1m/year.....he's a good player, not a million dollar/year player. And then you're risking pushing our 1st back one spot if they finish below us.

Battle is worth more to us than North from a list management perspective. Would be an excellent addition as a puzzle piece in Brown and Gold, but as a dynamic in-between type I don't know what he really offers North Melbourne. Their list holes require genuine key position posts or elite end talent.

If North are offering big dollars to a Saints player it has to be a point of difference for them.

Wilkie or Owens. They'd probably love Howard too but wouldn't be offering that money to him.

Why would a good/in-demamd player do that?

There's no guarantee Norf is even still around in 7yrs. It's even worse for the player if they do still exist as its 7yrs of life they're never getting back.

Instead of 7yr deals, the 'beggars need to offer 2-3yr deals on big money. Players are more likely to think they can pick up the pieces & get their life back together if they've only had to endure 2-3yrs there.
