Watch the semi final. Amazing effort, with very few errors.

Watch the PF, not so flash an effort riddled with errors.

Consistency is the problem. A SF Gibson would be awesome but how often are we going to get that performance? If players can't back it up and play week after week at a good level then we wont achieve success. I hope he can take his game to the next level but I am not optimistic.

We don't even need SF Gibson, we need 75% SF Gibson but every week. He just causes so many momentum shifting howlers so consistency it makes it exceptionally difficult to overlook for the odd ripper games.

His one on Hawkins, wowser.
Yep, have watched that game a few times now and every time I have to rewind and watch that tackle at least 2 or 3 times before I can proceed

Favioriate part of the game was him getting the ball in def 50, gut running to the wing to receive it and deliver inside 50 and when it came out he laid two tackles and won the ball on the wing again.

Remember when Brad Scott used to do that weekly TV show? First year he was with us.

One of the mouth breather ex players on it, possibly Alistair Lynch, asked Scott where he saw the game going in three or four years. It was framed like "OK Brad, if there's a 15/16 year old kid out there who is getting really serious about their footy, thinking they could be drafted in a few years time, what's one thing you'd tell them to do so they will be ready for the way you see the game evolving?"

Scott answered straight away "That kid should go to their school athletics coach and ask to train to be a 10,000 metre runner. That's what we'll be looking for in players in a few years, that mixture of pace and endurance."

Bang Sam Gibson.

Did he also say he will need to be able to kick a footy and hit targets? Or is that just a bonus.

Croc.

He does kick the odd nice goal but yes, his disposal isn't the best in the game. Or even very good. It is good. If it was elite he'd be Ben Cousins and players like that don't come along too often. Gibson is a vital cog in the midfield, be happy with what we have.

lol you think Gibson's skills are elite?

I just don't see any outside mids with his limitations playing for Hawthorn or the Swans, he wouldn't get a game with them even now.

Your inside doesn't have to have elite ball skills, but if they don't then you can't also afford for your outside to be slow and bland as well. List needs to have proper balance.

I don't really have an issue with Gibson or Anthony before him, it is our team makeup which can't afford them in our side if we are to have success. If our inside was pacier, with better skills and more aggressive play (ie Judd, Fyfe, Pendlebury, Cotchin, etc) then your outside doesn't necessarily need to be that great.

Our inside lacks that kind of flair so we need our outside to have the flair, we can't have both a stodgy inside and a stodgy outside. We have relied too much on our half back line for generating run and spread because we are lacklustre from stoppages.

#43 Sam Gibson

Games: 25
Goals: 8

Summary:
It was a sublime year for one of the most polarising players on the North Melbourne list. Firmly entrenched in the best 22 for his unbelievable running capacity, Gibson took his game to another level. Despite an extremely poor start in Round 1 against Essendon, Gibson bounced back with 31 possessions, seven marks and four tackles against the Western Bulldogs. He repeated the dose a week later against Port Adelaide in a stirring win. He was arguably best on ground in an upset victory over Fremantle in Round 6, gathering 31 possessions, taking seven marks, laying five tackles and kicking two goals. A 35 disposal effort against the Brisbane Lions in Round 9 capped off an extremely impressive start to his 2014 campaign.

He experienced a down period, however. Between Rounds 10 and 12, Gibson averaged 19 touches, however in one of those matches he laid a career-best 10 tackles. His output increased once again, amassing over 25 disposals in five consecutive games between Rounds 13 and 17. Another quiet period followed as North suffered a lull in form, before picking up once again in the lead-up to the finals. A 31 possession effort, along with seven marks, five tackles and a goal against the Western Bulldogs in Round 21 had him primed for September.

There has often been a knock on Gibson's disposal, with some calling for his demotion to the VFL for not using the ball efficiently. However, the truth of the matter is, North Melbourne don't advance past week one of the finals without a raft of key players, and one of those is Gibson. With his continual gut-running, he picked up 27 disposals, took 10 marks, laid three tackles and finished off an excellent team passage of play with a goal in the third quarter. A week later, he played his best game of the season, racking up a season-high 35 touches against Geelong, along with eight marks and five tackles. Like the game a week earlier, North would not have won if not for Gibson's courageous running.

As a result of his productive year, Gibson finished as the league's most productive player in terms of uncontested possessions, while ranking fourth for most effective disposals, showing that he does in fact do damage with ball in hand. Having not missed a game since his debut with the club, Gibson looks set for another big year in 2015.

In his third year at Arden Street, Sam Gibson took another step forward. Already an undisputed member of North Melbourne’s best 22, the midfielder became one of the side’s most important players.

Sam Gibson used to fly under the radar and he used to like it that way. However a 35-possession game against Geelong in the semi-final blew his cover.

Sometimes you're lucky and the ball falls in your arms.

Would not have beaten Geelong or Essendon without him?

What bullshit!

His first half against Essendon was putrid, especially the effort against Chapman in the goal square. And his 2nd half against Geelog was ordinary. Also his prelim was nothing to write home about.

I don't get the love fest. Handy depth player but that's it.

When you run around on your own all day, every game.. How the * can you only kick 8 goals in a season??? And have such a shithouse scoring assist stats.

Makes too many unforced errors, doesn't kick enough goals nor set enough up and if we are arrious about being a contender than a Wells/Harvey/Higgins/Dal can easily take his place on a wing and deliver into f50 and we'd be an infinitely more dangerous team.

Good player though, happy to have him as depth.

Got around to rewatching it recently.

Apart from nearly breaking something over the umpiring, the qaulity of Sam Gibson's game really stood out. To play you best career game to date in a winning final is pretty impressive.

How did Kieran Harper play in those games?

His best game was against Freo and he was wonderful.

How did Kieran Harper play in those games?

Kieran was better than Gibbo in the prelim. Providing nothing is better than turning the ball over under no pressure when all your team mates have run forward of the play. Time and time again.

Keep drinking the Koolaid.

Where did he finish in the best and fairest?

He has shown the value of gut running and a descent tank, a willingness to work on his faults (kicking disposal and goal kicking) and tackle monsters like Hawkins, shows the value of Gibson. I'm a big fan of the guy, because of his workrate and making a career out of running.

I don't know much about you Arjen but did Gibbo do something to hurt your family or yourself? Gibbo is one of the first selected on the team sheet and that's a fact. Every player in the first half vs * was putrid and solid in the second half like the team. The Geelong SF, he was BOG by a long, long way at half time before a drop off in the 4th quarter (again, much like the team). Knock his kicking all you want but his desire, willingness and heart to keep on running and being an option. There's a reason why he hasn't missed a single game since his debut in 2012. If we was a dud like you portray him to be, he would be back at Box Hill in the VFL or would be an qualified engineer instead of playing for the greatest club on the planet each and every week!

7th. In fairness, Gibson wasn't the only one who had a terrible prelim.
