No 350k with the clause of performing
Some are saying 500 reguardless of performance
If he is as good as they think he is then the extra 100k is within his reach

Performance clauses make for selfish players.

The club is struggling to do anything right here. If Hogan goes it will be read as a significant weakness in a football club who cannot keep players, if he stays we paid too much for him. We went all in when we put up the picks to get him, no point in blinking now when it is about money. A good brave move by a football club who are doing a lot more right than they were two years ago.

Good points.

Expecting 500 before even playing a game is selfish ( IM AWARE HE PROBABLY HASNT ASKED FOR THAT)

Sure, but performance clauses bring the contract to game day which they really shouldn't be. If you say "kick 50 goals" get an extra 150k a year then that forward is going to try to kick as many goals as possible rather than doing the team thing when they should.

Yeah maybe, But if he was being selfish you could just drop him

It's a speculated figure and a lot of money for a first contract extension but really, if that is close to his market value due to a shortage of young gun key forwards in the comp (GWS and GC) and WA clubs wanting to lure him home then we aren't paying through the nose. Who knows what other clubs are also willing to offer.

Who is saying pay him 500k?

yep, that's exactly the point. Supply and demand. Jessie puts 500k on his head and enters the draft, you don't think Brissie, St Kilda or the dogs will pull the trigger?

A bunch of people up there saying pay 500k

Yeah they probably would cuz they are desperate
Name one player who has left after 2 years and 0-5 games with a 500k price tag on their head, Its stupid because it wont happen
And anyway isnt the premise of leaving so you can get a heap more elsewhere?

No way is he leaving Melbourne

Tom farking Scully.

And we're not desperate? We haven't had a player with the potential of Jessie on our list since the Ox pre-breakdown. Besides something is worth what somebody is willing to pay. If Jessie wanted 500k, he'd get it.

Tom Scully went as a 'Free agent' type thing he didnt enter the draft for the number 1 pick to take him

No we arent desperate and we shouldnt portray ourselves as desperate, If we are already willing to accept the future of this club rests on his shoulders then we are both ****ed
Nick Riewoldt, Tony Lockett, Gary Ablett Snr, Nathan Buckley etc are all once in a generation players who didnt win their sides a premiership

I honestly dont know what he is worth but dont throw tonnes at him because he is our saviour and dont let other clubs drive his price way up because we dont have any backbone

He's not the saviour, and we may or may not win a flag in his playing career where ever that may hypotheticly be, but we cannot let this kid walk out on the club, particularly after Scully did.

Think about it. If Melbourne weren't going to offer him a decent contract, why on earth would he bother re-signing now? Surely he would just wait until the end of next year where his performances will warrant a decent sized contract.

Melbourne want the security of his signature now, so they will have to pay the price.

'Get stuffed, doesn't deserve it, he hasn't played a game. Spend it on a gun midfielder'
'Let's secure him, so when we become a good side, we've got a monster forward who can hopefully help us push for a flag'

Would be shattering if it ended up like Carlton and they offload a really promising KPF only to desperately need him 3 years later.
We need him, yes, he'll be getting overs, but in the long term it sounds as if it will be worth it and that's really where we are looking at in regards to where we spend our money, and for me, it's worth taking the risk to find out. We've got the cap space, I don't see the issue.

Lol I remember when people on this board were saying they would be happy to pay Scully 800k -1 Mil to keep him
I remember saying that you cant divert all your money towards one bloke because players like trenners and jones deserved more than him

Hogan isnt Scully but here we go again, If Hogan deserves half a mill then Tyson deserves 750 and Nathan Jones deserves 1.5

We're not just paying for Hogan, we're paying for the early security of his signature. It's really not a difficult concept to understand.

Its not the concept I have a problem with, Its the amount of money some of you blokes are willing to offer

It's stupid to pay a zero game player that much but that is modern footy. It's crazy these days. I would bet my house that half the other clubs would pay him $500k no questions asked.

Yep. We want him to sign an extension mid-contract, not the other way around.

And I am not sure the difference is that much. Him staying is more important than the cost and will be even more important if Frawley goes.

This is a huge point in this discussion - could you imagine if he did leave?

The stigma that would be attached to our club (having lost Scully, Sylvia, Rivers, Moloney and possibly Frawley in recent times) would be disastrous.

We MUST buck the trend and retain our key players in coming years, or we will be relegated to 'feeder club' status and it would be impossible for us to move up the ladder and compete at the top.

You also cant panic everytime a player comes out of contract because you might lose him
Where is he possibly going to go?
Brisbane?? Why the * would he go there ??

Why would he leave Melbourne to go StKilda or the Dogs??

There is no need to panic with him he isnt going anywhere lol

Because they will pay him 500k+ a year before he's even played a game.

When they put the offers down on the table of 500k then id be happy for the club to match it

However with him still in contract and no real possibility of him leaving im not going to be scared by manager scare tactics

He wouldn't go there, but the fact they (and others) would pay that sort of money means that that is his worth on the open market. Now whilst we don't have to pay "full retail" we still have to be in the ball park, particularly considering we're trying to convince him to sign an extension.
