How can you be comfortable backing hawthorn when Geelong have such a good record of beating the hawks?

Geelong's 2nd halves are a worry and Hawks have overall been a better side this year.
At the moment I'm not betting on anything though, will wait for teams.

Sydney should win. Buddy will have a day out if McPharlin doesn't play.

Michael Johnson out for Freo http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-09-01/johnson-out-of-finals

Luke McPharlin out for Freo http://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/af...042446492?nk=d9f650c5110bd8f998c493589e683773
-they aren't going to risk a 32 KPD in a final with a soft tissue injury surely...

Jake Carlisle ruled out http://www.theage.com.au/afl/essend...ut-injured-jake-carlisle-20140901-10b3cy.html

Lachie Hansen unlikely, Nathan Grima and Leigh Adams possibles http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport...043720980?nk=d9f650c5110bd8f998c493589e683773

Steve Johnson probable http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...to-play-against-hawthorn-20140901-10ay0t.html

Cyril Rioli out http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-08-28/rioli-up-against-it

Matt Suckling, Brad Hill and Ben Stratton maybes, Brian Lake subject to fitness and should play (last part - my opinion) http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...itness-for-geelong-final-20140901-10auli.html

Sydney (Pyke, Franklin, Reid, Kennedy, McGlynn, Bird) - no news, very unlikely they won't all be right to go considering two were only out for rnd 23 and based on this news from last week http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2014-08-26/three-key-swans-likely

Port - no known injury troubles

Early AFL Play:

3.5U – HT/FT: Sydney/Sydney @ $2.00
0.5U – Sydney Swans -11.5 @ $1.91

Anybody think that Freo were going through a tough training load during their poor performances against StKilda and Carlton?

I cant see them beating Sydney without Johnson and McPharlin though.

Not from what I understand and not generally what the training watchers reported. For the Saints game, it appeared that the players were ill. This might have been as a result of a heavy workload but I think it was probably more viral/gastro. Carlton were very good and Freo were lucky to escape wth the 4 points. I'd be hesitant to suggest that was workload.

Freo can win but I'd be leaning to the Sydney line or 1-39 at this stage.

Good analysis mate, if true that makes sense, as they were very poor.

They have been rock solid in the last couple of weeks.

Well, just for info sake, Carlton went 23 point win over North, 5 point loss to Freo, 39 point win over GC and 6 point loss to Geelong. Not a bad month for us, bookended with Buddy and Port flogging us. I'd think this run of form (if we'd played that sort of footy all year, would be the mid-range side we were last year) doesn't indicate much about Freo.

I agree 100% about no Johnson/McPharlin though. All of a sudden, Dawson-Silvagni-Spurr-Duffield-Ibbotson-??? is up against a forward line of Buddy-Tippett-Goodes-McGlynn + whoever else the Swans decide to go down there. Freos midfield will have to kill it to give the Swans a chance, or very very negative footy (I don't mean just pressure footy, I mean true flooding etc and back Hill-Ballantyne-Walters-Pearce on the rebound).
